Dear Leader wins Nobel Peace Prize.

Yes. I don't know why someone would see it fit to nominate him at that point (as if now isn't bad enough). However, in fairness, the committee can consider material not cited in the nomination, and factors that develop after the nomination.

True. I bet it was the Harvard professor/racist cop Beer Summit that clinched this for him.

fair enough, but how did they ever accept the nomination?

Was it just a slim year for talent?

If I'm them and this is the best available, we forgo this year's award to help prevent further dilution of the brand.

Why, to a European (I know it's Norwegian) commission, would Obama be a bad nomination?

because, even given their absurd sensibilities, he has accomplished absolutely nothing vis a vis world peace.

hahaha, this from the nobel prize website...

"for his extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples"

extraordinary?

This award has been less about accomplishments and more like a political popularity contest for years. The fact that so many people who shouldn't have even been cosidered have won is amazing. The award means very little these days.

Accomplishments? The Nobel Peace Prize isn't about accomplishments. It's about efforts and words. Obama has made communications and ties with Europe better. Regardless of if it's better for the US, it's better for Europe and the world... in their eyes.

Don't look at this like you. Look at this like a star-struck European that has seen Bush as a politically inept war-monger and has been watching helplessly while the US wages war upon war on it's own and has shown no regard for the treaties it's a member of. They see the US as crashing the world economy. They see their "little brother" is much more successful and influential as them. They also see Obama as trying to make the US more like Europe and this, combined with following Bush, is a win-win-win-win for them. Not for us, but why do they care what he does to his own country. This is about what they think not what you or I think.

I have liberal friends that think it's a total sham and don't like that it's awarding Obama when he hasn't accomplished anything he's promised.

Guantanamo not being closed and the war in Afghanistan escalating and Iraq not easing up significantly are 3 examples they immediately listed. I guess that's the difference between DC liberal and California liberal. Maybe? Got me.

Asked why the prize had been awarded to Mr Obama less than a year after he took office, Nobel Committee head Thorbjoern Jagland said: "It was because we would like to support what he is trying to achieve"

"It is a clear signal that we want to advocate the same as he has done," he said.

If Obama was inaugurated on January 20th and the deadline for Nobel nominations is February 1st, that must have been an extremely inspiring 11 days of leadership.

Obama winning the election and replacing Bush must have been his primary achievement to further world peace

Notice the absolute failures that have won this hunk of tin. Jimmy Carter and Woodrow Wilson...... that should tell you every thing!

Another reason we shouldn't be concerned with "our standing in the world".

The fact that Obama got a prize that none of us can figure out is proof that world opinion is irrelevant? While I agree that Obama winning this is odd if not just sort of irrelevant in the scheme of things, and while I agree that world opinion should be an extremely low factor in any decision-making, I don't see the connection.

it's been stated by the media that obama being liked by the world will benefit the US in some way and that world approval of our actions is a sign we are going down the right road. this prize is on a long list of dumbass things our european brothers have done and begs the question as to if their approval is a good thing.

I am putting money on a second one for him, the one for economics.

He's going to have Nobel Prize bookends after he wins the award for economics

It's hard to tell, but he may pick up one in literature first for his two groundbreaking tomes.

I'm going to predict it now. Obama will be the first person to win a Nobel Prize in every category.

When it comes to handing out Peace Prizes to American presidents, the Nobel committee should have stopped after the first one.

I think the equivalent in college football would be Crompton winning the Heisman.

No. It would be Kiffin winning NCAA Coach of the Year after his recruiting class and "singing Rocky Top in Gainesville all night long" comment.
