Necroticism: Descanting the Insalubrious is Carcass' best work IMO.

Corporal Jigsore Quandry is a classic song.

I love that stuff, but I think the Heartwork and Swansong albums are their best because those were truly groundbreaking.

Sepultura.

I'd say Pantera but they are straight mainstream compared to others listed in this thread.

Pantera isn't black or death metal, not even close. Sepultura's really old stuff has the black and death metal elements though. In fact, I'd say their very first album is actually one of the first black metal albums ever and gets entirely overlooked because of everything that came out of Norway.

the closest I've ever gotten to death metal is Opeth (BWP & Still Life).

But I'll probably start buying some of Death's stuff, they seem to reign supreme in the genre, or at least RYM seems to think so.

First two Opeth albums are the best..imo..:good!:

I agree most of Pantera 's stuff isn't black/death, but The Great Southern Trend Kill dabbles...

I don't think so. I know Phil loves that stuff, but I just can't hear it in the music.

I would agree. I used to love this band, but I'm not really sure what has happened to their mindset. They are extremely boring now.
