Has anyone purchased or read this? I bought on Amazon a couple weeks ago and just started reading a chapter or two a day this past weekend.

I'm only about 4 chapters in and the info thus far is pretty incredible. Stuff such as only 14 of the 60+ teams making an actual profit and how the payouts listed are an absolute joke when you break down the numbers. They broke down VT's bowl expenses from the 2009 Orange and how they literally lost millions off of it.

I didn't realize that each school is stuck with the bill for any tickets in its allotment that it fails to sell.

I read on VT's site that this is one of the ways it loses money on bowl games. VT expects the same hit this year with Orange bowl.

the amount of research that went into this book would probably baffle us all, considering what the norm seems to be these days with blanket statements and "stats"

Not very well written (shamelessly biased to an extreme level, which is hardly ever a good thing and isn't one here), and in this particular format and style it would have been better as a series of in-depth blog posts than a book.

Now that I got the literary critic in me out of the way, I love the book. It's spot on and exactly the completely non-objective kick in the pants we need.

oregon bowl tickets going as low as $20. stanford fans travel very poorly as well. they've only sold half of their allotment. pretty sad

That's because the PAC-10 is used to its teams sucking. Its fans don't know how to respond whenever there is actually a team that is worth a damn.

stanford is a paricurally bad case. they can't even draw 20K a game at home. Washington and Cal fans travel pretty much regardless. UCLA, UA, ASU, and USC fans travel very well when good. Oregon is somewhere in teh middle.

I remember there being quite a bit of green & yellow in NS in September, I mean, considering how far away Oregon is.

i believe cal had more, but remember oregon was coming off a top-10 finish. their attendance to the holiday bowl a couple of years back was dismal. they have a loyal fanbase surely, but it's small. Their bandwagonners don't reach ucla or usc levels, but they have a lot of them.

How in the name of crap can Virginia Tech lose money on the Orange Bowl?

I work with Hokie fans who say that a lot of people refuse to buy tix directly from the school and pay both face value and the fees. They instead buy off of the secondary market.

So, VT fans will show up at the game, but the school will still take a hit.

Considering how much money the bowls profit, I think it's an abomination that they don't pick up the travel expenses of the players, managers, coaches, bands, and spirit squads. They could at least cover the airfare and lodging. Those expenses contribute greatly to so many teams being "in the red."

Looking for "facts" in your posts is like wading through Wikpedia. Such an expert you are. :eek:lol:

i realize you haven't been following your team very long, but you might want to actually check to see if i'm right before putting your foot in your mouth.

Your disdain towards everything UO is duly noted. And it's reassuring to know that everything is "true" because you said so. :loco:

You're just another A-typical sports kook with vast "internet" knowledge who goes out of his way to slight UO at any given opportunity. It's humorous really.
