NASHVILLE — If an NCAA Tournament bid is not extended Sunday, Kentucky would be obligated to accept an invitation to play in the National Invitation Tournament.
C.M. Newton, a former UK director of athletics and a member of the NIT Selection Committee, said that schools must decide how they feel about playing in the NIT long before Selection Sunday.
"The rule is, if they turn down (the NIT), they turn it down at the start of the year," Newton said Saturday.
All Southeastern Conference teams have agreed to play in the NIT if they get passed over by the NCAA Tournament, Newton said before adding, "Quite frankly, I don't know of any school" that has declared it will not play in the NIT.
When asked if teams were obligated to play in the NIT, Newton said, "Yeah. Unless they let you know (otherwise at the beginning of the season)."

even a possibility? Traveling to play a sucky team in a tournament that doesn't matter. I've heard Arkansas, the Ville and Georgetown has. I'm sure more has but I haven't really researched it. Would be awesome if Tennessee did. Would anyone be upset if Tennessee did?

and they aren't thinking the same thing about UT?

In theory I would like to decline, but can not pass on more practice time. Are you saying they declined this year or in past?

Nah. We deny we look like crybaby-sore losers. Let’s make the best of a bad situation. Period. We lost the games the committee didn't.

Why in the hell do we consider spending a fortune to send our team to play in a tournament thats purpose is to decide who is the 68th or 69th best team in the nation.

The NCAA tournament has already decided who the really credible teams are. Keep those orange jersey at home and cut our losses. Nobody really gives a damn aoout the NIT. Winning the NIT is like saying, if we worth worth a s++t we would have had a 16 seed in the real tournament. That tournament is the NCAA.

Cut our llosses and keep the orange jerseys in the locker room where they really belong.

The other line of reasoning is that you don't allow quitters to keep playing.

I don't think they quit, I think Cuonzo was dealt a bad hand with mental midget Trae and compounded it by not signing a pg.

I don't know think they quit. They just didn't play with intensity. I agree he was dealt a bad hand, but everybody can play hard and aggressive. If not, you sit. Old adage is to play every game like it's your last, as it could always be your last. Well, when it really could be your last, its a good idea to leave it on the floor.

Not trying to put lipstick on the pig that is the NIT, but one thing it is NOT is a competition to see who is the 69th best team. That is just not the case. The NCAA tournament does not have the top 68 teams in it. It likely has the top 35-40 or so teams and a bunch of low level tournament winners.

As far as playing in the NIT, you ALWAYS play in anything that gives your team the chance to practice more.

Even if we could it would be stupid like a football team gets more practice for making to a bowl, same for basketball we could always use more practice
