Defense of Georgia bringing the blitz package for this game

Great question. It can be a highly effective play on 3rd and 6-8 yards when they bring the house. I don’t know what Heupel’s thinking on that is but I wonder if he’s saving it for a specific situation. We know the backs can catch.

It is also effective at slowing down blitzes. I thought we would use against Bama, but our line handled them straight up. So maybe he saw no reason to use it. I’m not sure we have thrown one all season.

Run it to Hyatt’s side when they are playing man and have him run a streak…and there will be a ton of open space for a back to run with lead blockers. I’d even have Fant or someone peel back to pick up a lineman that sees it early, he could prevent the defender from killing the play early.

Nolan Smith has a pectoral injury and is doubtful for this week's game.
Their best D tackle, Carter was on a snap count last week as well with a knee so I do not think he's 100% but will play from what I have read. They are also down their starting Nickle for the year.

The play you just described goes for 25+ yards every time

UGA runs the exact same defensive scheme as Bama. UGA is better on defense than Bama but the man to man scheme will really stress their secondary.
If UGA runs some version of a zone blitz, Tennessee has excellent blocking WR so the run after the catch will be deadly. Potentially in a mismatch with more blockers in the area than defenders.
I see UGA trying to force the situation to create turnovers.

I’ve been doing some research in the past two days on how the defense of Georgia might come after us. It looks and sounds like they’re going to put in more blitz packages to come after Hooker. Something that we’ve haven’t seen much in games thus far.
So, I was wondering if our coaches will put new wrinkles in to counter those blitzes? I believe everyone is saying they will try to collapse the pocket to throw Hooker’s timing off.
I believe we can throw out to the flat, roll him out a little bit, and kill them on quick slants.
Anyone else hearing this?

Blitzing a mobile QB with a pretty good OLine and good TE play seems like risky idea atleast if not bad bad idea. If they can't get to Hooker or he escapes the pocket, he will make them pay either with legs or with passes on the move.

I am sure they will blitz but they will have to disguise them very well. The only good way, if there exists one, to slow down a well oiled offense like this to do what KY tried to do: drop multiple guys in coverage and hope your DLine is able to contain the run. This forces Hooker to make tight throws. KY could not use this against us as we were able to run down their throats. GA might have better luck doing it but TN can easily counter that with short passes over the middle, sideline passes etc to set up play action pass.

Again I am not coach so I am sure offensive geniuses like Huepel and Golesh probably will have better answer than my 'not worth much' opinion above.

The UGA "D" will already be spread thin given our alignment, and the WR splits. If they bring a blitz, who is going to cover the middle? Bru, all day! That is the beauty of this offense, it makes a defense choose how they want to die, run or pass. It would be one thing if we didn't have a run game, but we do.

And that's what fans of opposing teams consistently overlook even though coach Huepel spells it out for them. Other fans keep calling it gimmick air raid . This scheme starts with the run and the run has to be in sync.

UGA fans are telling me on social media they will make us one dimensional. Good luck.

Not worried about our O line, they'll be fine. Our D line will determine who wins this game. They don't have to have a great day.....just a good day.

Blitzing was the strategy Pitt used and it did slow us down. That and stacking the box. We didnt throw the ball over their heads enough to make them change that strategy.

But since that game our oline has been vastly better and we are playing much better on offense overall. Due to that Pitt game experience, we will be better prepared for such a strategy. I really hope they decide to play 1-on-1 on the outside. I'll take all 3 of our WRs in that match up.

Georgia when healthy I think is better defensively than Bama. Idk that they’re healthy in this game. Tennessee will still score in bunches unless Kirby figures out something no one else has been able to.

On offense their TEs will be a unique challenge to shut down but it seems like overall their offense is less explosive than Bama’s and maybe our defense has figured out some things in the secondary. I do feel like the defense comes in with a little chip on their shoulder with our offense and Georgia’s defense getting all the praise in this matchup.

Especially given the UGA DB's are suspect!

Georgia has 10 sacks as everyone has posted already. I’ll let you guys figure out who has most of those and is their best pass rusher.

We’re going to beat Georgia, beat Bama in the conference title game to retire Saban, then beat Georgia again in the national title game. All that was once wrong will be set right this year.

Agree completely. Their offense is very good at moving the chains and their defense is good at limiting yards but they are not built to come back from a deficit. They are not an explosive offense at all, and if you can affect Bennett and handle their run game they become average.

There is absolutely no problem if UGA makes UT be dimensional. When sentenced to death you get to chose which method of death will be used on you. I’m ok if UGA decides they want to die by run.

I like UT's WRs against UGA's DBs if they blitz. UT will have the favorable numbers on the outside.

Side note, something we have not seen this season is the screen game from UT. Wonder if CJH is saving it for UGA?
No screens needed when you drop back and people are wide open.

that is exactly what these 2 GA homers broke down film and said. They said the best defense against us was Pitt and they blitzed constantly which is something Bama and LSU did not do. Kinda long video but not totally uninteresting

This was great. Very complimentary. I think we see the very best from UGA.

When you look at Bama defensively without the Tennessee game in there they look a lot different. Elite run defense; people forget in addition to Hyatt doing whatever the F he wanted our run game churned out 182 yards that night on Bama. You could argue they would be right there with Georgia in run defense. Georgia hasn’t been particularly good at getting to the qb to this point in the year.

" Georgia going to bring the blitz" ??? This may get the 2022 " DUH AWARD" Everyone in Tenn/Georgia knows they plan to bring the blitz. Adjust accordingly

Rewatching the past few games, the ball is out of Hooker's hand many times at around 2 seconds and occasionally close to 3 seconds. That doesn't leave much time for a blitz to get home and is one of the reasons our offense runs so smoothly.

Well, I hope this is the case early in the game. Hooker can also stand in the pocket for quite a long time, and we will probably want to avoid that as it increases the risk of a sack. Sacks are never good, of course--but we especially want to avoid them early in the game when getting off to a good start is paramount and we don't want to get the crowd and georgia's defense stoked up. We've been very good about scoring early and getting leads--and if we can do that we can certainly take a little air out of the crowd. I like our chances if the offensive line plays well.

Tillman is going to be key in this game. He has the ability to get quick separation with his strong build. Tillman and Bru can box out defenders and Hyatt with a free release? Easy blitz killer.

I don’t have to argue it. If Tennessee didn't smoke Bamas defense they would be ranked higher than Georgia in total d. They are already ranked higher in most significant defensive categories.
