Our pass defense is a major weakness. Even more now, I'd imagine they will break character and attack it.
They can't. They actually suck on a worst in the nation level. They're 127th out of 130 in pass offense.

There are probably more capable passing offenses in high school in CA and FL than Iowa.

Middle school. I have never in my life heard of a team that punted for 1000 more yards than their offense produced. They punted for 4100 yards. We are likely to outgain their total offense on punt returns alone

I don't suggest taking a shot each time there's a punt in the bowl game.

I'm sure Heupel has something up his sleeve, perhaps more tempo than we've seen most of the season, but their D is pretty tough. We're going to have some 3 and outs too.

my point there are gonna be so many punts chances are we will run one back... thats all it takes to outgain their offense and win the game.

Great spreadsheet.
This really displays how thin we are in the secondary.
It is scary, but I think our staff can coach.
7 DBs when we usually play 5 on the field is going to be the story of the game for us.
My concern is Iowa plays a bruising tundra chewing running game, and that punishment a defense can take the strength out of DBs (and all defenders, but we lack bodies in the secondary) over 4 quarters.

Makes me wonder.
Did Jackson Ross ever display that potent athleticism potential that was prominently mentioned at the beginning of the season? I figured that noise was mostly a PR attempt to encourage the opponents' special teams to holdout a spy.
Could be an opportunity to exploit that wrinkle.

I don't think Iowa can throw at all.
True, but I suspect they are planning to change that enough to thwart our defensive scheme.
They have the personnel to run an effective West Coast offense. I would plan short passes to RBs and TEs in the flat to attack our LBs and DBs.

I've no idea about any punt tricks Heupel might use, but that's probably all based on film study. As much as Iowa punts and forces punts, they may have an excellent special teams.

As for Iowa's passing attack, they're really 127 out of 130. Only the service academies are behind them. Their passing is apparently awful. If they try screens and swing passes, we might jump them and see a pick 6.

What is the reasoning for the secondary exodus? I don’t disagree that we need a fresh start but it is odd. Do you think the coaches have been told to clean house? Or do you think that Martinez’s contract won’t be extended?

Both.

I don’t think the coaches “were told” to clean house, more likely they realize that they need better players at those positions.

It would be interesting to know which players if any are being cross trained in our bowl practices. Might be working some of the quicker LBs in the Safety slots…and getting some safety’s reps at corner…maybe ever getting some receivers some reps in the defensive backfield

LOL, they will on 1 Jan. LOL We for some reason make opponent QB's look like Heisman candidates. Not trashing, just saying. I'm betting the young men get er done, and our DL crushes their QB.
We will definitely commit to stopping the run (see Kentucky game) so they probably will pass for more yardage than they normally do…but hopefully the aggregate effect will mean fewer points allowed (more interceptions, more 3rd stops, and fewer sustained drives by Iowa).
