Defensive changes for 2023

New scheme/philosophy if not new DC
New DB coach
Transfer portal for CB
McDonald to SS
Walker to FS
Slaughter to STAR
Turrentine to STAR

Assuming we get no transfers starting lineup is probably:

DL- same except Harrison at LEO and losing Garland at DT, plenty of options
Mike- Herring
Will- Beasley
CB- Burrell
CB- Turnage/Hadden
STAR- Slaughter
FS- Walker
SS- McCollough
Slaughter
Turnage
Flowers
Burrell
And 1 other was all out against Vandy and the D did great.

Garner is one of the best in the business. That’s an established fact. And you said you would fire him. That tells me all I need to know.
No argument. I said I would allow the next DC to pick his staff, no strings attached. I don’t think Garners value outweighs getting a quality DC who can assemble his own staff.

I mean I get your point. But is any DC really a sure thing? Not really. I mean we could hire a top shelf DC, let him pick his staff and they fail. We at least know Garner is a for sure thing. I have no issues with every other defensive coach getting replaced. I kind of hope it happens.

The talent argument is we need talent to be better on defense. We have better talent than Vandy, miss State, etc yet we put a worse defense on the field.
We do not have the talent at MLB, safety, or corner to win an SEC or National title. We won 10 games this year because we could outscore 10 of the 12 teams we played.

That doesn’t rule out Garner coming back. As we’ve seen on offense, system and coaching chemistry matters.

At 1st, I wasn’t real impressed with Heupel bringing his Oline coach. I am now. I have nothing but respect for coach Garner, I just know that we need a true system on defense and coaches that are in sync.

This might sound crazy, but I’d like a defensive coach who can develop talent and teaches fundamentals. Hire someone like Chris Springer from Bethel.

Unfortunately, we don’t get to play Vandy every week. They didn’t even attempt to challenge our DBs.
People was worried they would beat us! They just beat Kentucky and Florida. I know it's Vandy and shouldn't count for **** but our rival was hot and we was not.

While they need to improve their pass rush without having to blitz our DL is solid and has depth. I like how much we rotate this group and think pass rush will improve with development from Josephs, Peace, and West in particular. With incoming talent Hobbs who is big enough to play all 3 downs, and situational schemes for Bradley and Herring. If they come on West may play more at DT. With the older players on the line we know what we have, with Omari Thomas leading the entire group.

I would prefer 2 new starters at LB, potentially from portal but expect we won’t have enough roster spots to add 2 from the portal. Probably will only find one. Beasley is okay but isn’t the level we need but is adequate starter. Much like the DL I hope we rotate and play our depth more often.

McDonald moving to safety IMO would be favorable. But otherwise we could use at least 2 new starters from the portal and match existing DBs on the roster to positions their skill sets are better fits. 2 brand new CBs would be ideal, so we could move Slaughter, Turnage, etc…to safety and Star. Also play depth more often in this group.

Overall, we have no stars on this side of the ball (with exception perhaps of Omari) so will need to be a group approach.

we have the defensive talent to beat 11 out of 12 teams.....fact. hell, we beat bama.

It was a hybrid position. His top 2 college choices (us and Notre Dame) both recruited him as a linebacker. People get mixed up because Chavis tried him out at safety beginning Fall camp to see if he could get on the field quicker. Lasted a day or so.
Thank you sir

It's Vandy

Stop making it sound like a team full of wall ons could go out and beat Vandy. They couldn’t. Vandy beat UF. The same UF that essentially blanked the same SC team that killed us and beat SC.
