then you are wealthy in my book.

to be honest, if I was single, no kids, I would consider myself wealthy making about 30k per year as I am alot like you...minus a car.

In about a month I'll probably be selling my car, as I've moved next door to where I'll be working starting in April. I'll be making the same amount of money as a bike mechanic, potentially more. That'll save me gas money, insurance, and maintenance costs. Almost finished building my third bike, so I won't have a problem with transportation anywhere. Could use a better public transportation system around here, but I digress.

anyone who makes at least $30,000 per annum, before taxes

I'm not rich then. I make $20k. Paying my bills is a little stressful, but I could cull some fat and live okay.

what city you live in volatile?

you can bike year round?

I live in Moline, IL now. I can, technically, bike year-round anywhere. Just have to be properly equipped. Right now I don't have much in the way of cold weather gear, so I don't ride everywhere until the start of spring. Going to Iowa will take a bit longer than before, but I really won't need to go over there much anyways.

You got some chains for your tires?:)

Awesome. Sounds kinda redneckish.

Probably the exact opposite of redneck. A redneck bike would probably be one that was originally bought at Walmart with dual suspension that doesn't actually work, all rusted out because it's never been maintained. My bikes are the complete opposite. I have an early 80's Miyata touring bike, all original that I save from Goodwill. A carbon fiber Felt road bike. And an aluminum Rocky Mountain mountain bike handbuilt in Canada and fully assembled by myself. All well maintained and not "jacked up." (No camo anywhere near)

To me, to be rich means to have enough money to never have to work again and live comfortably. That rules out most people that Obama labels as rich.

Idk, I could save $125k/yr for a few years and then buy a small peice of land somewhere and retire. It's all about how you spend your money. I'd put up a pull barn, fill it with brazing and welding tools, a frame jig, and some other stuff... make my own bicycle frames. Not as a job, but as a hobby that happens to be an income.

I would love to just make $125k/yr, much less be able to save that much.

Oh I see, a 1%'r of bikes - elitist! :)

There are several customers that come in to the shop that own 10+ bikes. One of the customers is a trust fund baby who owns 22 bikes, all top of the line, a Lotus, and a Lexus ISF. The shop owner's road bike retails at $9.5k, his mountain bike at $3400, and his touring bike at $2800. I am (on the upper end of) the 99%.

and no doubt racist as well...

My first mountain bike race is April 15th. First road race is Memorial Day.

IL needs to raise the state wheel tax on the elitist that own multiple bikes.

I pay for the road repairs, yet I cause significantly less damage to the roads. I certainly wouldn't mind paying more in taxes if there were more bike lanes added.

you're "rich" if your daily driver is a Veyron and your chief lackey is forced to make do with an Audi A8

By your definition, full time taxi/delivery drivers and bartenders are rich. I never considered myself rich; only minimalist and comfortable.

My guess is that he is referring to a person without a spouse or dependents. In which case, I agree with him.
