Lawmakers can now wear religious headwear after House Democrats change rules

Ilhan-Omar-1.jpg

Congress hasn't been allowed to wear hats on the House floor since 1837, but the newly Democratic-controlled House voted to change that to accommodate lawmakers who wear religious headwear.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., and Rules Committee Chairman Jim McGovern, D-Mass., proposed the changes last month and it passed Thursday 234-197. The changes allow one of the first female Muslim members of Congress, Rep. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn., who also co-authored the proposal, to wear her headscarf.

The new rule reads: “During the session of the House, a Member, Delegate, or Resident Commissioner may not wear nonreligious headdress or a hat or remain by the Clerk’s desk during the call of the roll or the counting of ballots," the rule change reads.

Sounds like that thing about government and religion didn't last long. If you bend rules to accommodate religious belief, then you've inherently accommodated and given special dispensation to religions that distinguish themselves by dress - the dress is affirmation of religion in a place intended to be free of religious tenents. And before anyone jumps on that, I'll go further and say that taking an oath of government office on a bible isn't right either. And to further complicate matters, everyone needs to remember the court decisions on the ten commandments, etc and on Christmas decorations on government property. If she's uncomfortable over not wearing a damn rag over her head, then she shouldn't run for public office.

Grabbing someone by the p**sy is a lot more offensive than calling someone a m'fer.

Calling Trump a m'fer is just the tip of the iceberg for what that pos truly deserves.

What the President said at the time was never supposed to be heard outside of the guy he was with in that bus. I'm sure we all say things in private that you hope never gets out.

What she said was public and in a crowded room full of people.

Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-MI) kept up to $100,000 in rental income during the coronavirus pandemic despite calling on Congress to cancel rent, according to her most recent financial disclosures.

Tlaib’s financial disclosure report, released Thursday, showed she received anywhere from $15,001 to $50,000 in rental income in 2021, Fox News reported. Tlaib received this rental income from a Detroit property she owns.

However, while the Michigan congresswoman was collecting a steady flow of rent checks, she was at the forefront of a progressive movement in Congress to cancel rent and mortgage payments during the pandemic.
