Derek Mason hired at Vandy

Why are you calling Franklin a self-serving liar? You could say that about any coach trying to get to the next level...including UT's own Butch Jones. He was putting himself out there last year, pretty much like Franklin this year. Hell, even Peyton Manning texted Jones about the Colorado job.

Jones came back from Colorado, told the Cincy AD he was committed to Cincy, then bolted for UT. Sounds pretty self-serving to me.

It's just part of the business when you're a lower tiered school with a popular coach. You can't blame the coach for wanted to advance his career. There's just no way to do it and not look like a self-serving liar.

Boca I really don't know I'm so I'm not being smart...I agree with you. He took all the coaches as well. Did Jones steal any significant recruits? Franklin is a douche for what he is doing. I get kids tend to commit to coaches but this is a joke. Kiffin like...

Not really sure how I feel about this. After the last three years, I really want to hate Vandy's coach, but I'd be very surprised if Mason is the kind of self-serving loudmouth Jimmy Frank was.

Mason is a good hire! He gets to show off his skills in the hardest conference in the nation at a school that has been the door mat for years to schools like Bama, UF, UGA, Auburn and the likes. If this works out for him (constant winning seasons like JF) then I could see him going to the NFL. He's a solid recruiter as well and has experience recruiting to an "academic" school. This hire just made Vandy look a lot better to some recruits I'd bet.

Who will play in a bowl this year?
Vols
Vandy
Both
Neither
What do you honestly think!

I pick both.

UT will have to make at least 6-6 this year, that's got to be good enough for a trip to Nashville or Memphis at least.

I think even if Vandy can't replicate the last two years of success, looking at their 2014 schedule I think they might have a chance to break even, maybe get 7 wins.

Even though it is Candy, as bad as Franklin jumping ship may have deflated them, fact of the matter is after two years of 9-4 and back to back bowl wins, that's still room for some forward momentum, even if it falls off.

Is that much different from what this board does with each of our hires?

Not all are like that. Me and Doyle had a few phone conversations, where we thought hiring Butch would be the death if UT football. What some on this board might do, does not equal "what this board does". Try painting with a thinner brush.

As far as Mason to Vandy..... Good luck. Never been a head coach, has 11 commits, and lost a lot of talent this year. Vandy is back to where they were 4 years ago. I don't ever remember seeing a SEC team with such a weak class this close to signing day. They might have to start taking scrubs just to fill out this class. At least they are familiar with it.

great hire for vandy

So, you are guessing. You can't base that on anything. He has never been a head coach, and you are already saying "great" hire? That makes zero sense. I don't comprehend that logic. Muschamp
was never a head coach. How is that treating you?

Great hire. LMMFAO. You don't know **** about this hire.

Doormat for years to schools like bama, uf, aubie, and the likes.. That is funny Mr. Vandy fan. You just could not bring yourself to say that "Vandy has been a mud matt to UT for years". Just could not say it. Oh well. I hope Mr Mason does great things at vandy. Perhaps he will replace the cheesy anchor down with a new slogan. Mason-Vandy line perhaps. Something foolish would be fitting for scrub country.

according to Vandy fans, they have loads of talent coming back lol

they are not aware of what they just lost. pretty sure Mason runs a 3-4 as well. they dont have near the talent and depth to switch to that. he better stick with the current scheme defensively.

all in all VU fans are not going to accept the fact that this yr will be tough. Ole Mis is talented and i dont think anyone understands that Miss St will be much better. they should have a solid team with a ton of returners. UGA and UF prob wont have the bad luck they had last yr either. UT fans saw what it was like when you lose way more than half of your offensive production after the 2012 season. thats about what they lose with Matthews,Krause,ACS, and Tate. they also lose the entire secondary and two senior LBs

they will be younger at WR than we were this yr with a QB that doesnt throw the ball great

Vandy does have a rs qb that looks pretty dang good. Highly doubt Robinette will be the starter next season

Lol. Dude has NEVER HEAD COACHED a game. What about that do you not comprehend?

Lol. Did you read ANYTHING ELSE that I have said? I never implied he would be a good head coach. Someone corrected a post Lotterypick posted, and they corrected it in error. What about that can you not comprehend?

Vanderbilt's biggest mistake in this process is the fact that they're looking for the "Anti-Franklin". They want someone who embodies an academic mindset to represent their program, but that kind of attitude is the surest way to lose football games in the SEC.

The truth is, it took a charismatic, self-serving liar to lift the football team out of this mess. The only way they're going to sustain that success is if they continue to recruit at Franklin levels, and the only way they continue to recruit at Franklin levels is if they hire a charismatic, self-serving liar.

Logical fallacy ... it really is. There is (however remote) some tiny possibility (not probability mind you) that the new candy staff will recruit at Franklin levels. And THAT level is, in truth, only good enough to float around the bottom 3 ranks of the SECe year in and year out. Franklin lucked into a perfect storm of unfortunate circumstances for Florida, Georgia, and Tennessee that will never happen again...at least, say fer another 118 years.

Neither did Franklin, Goat. Mason's a great D coordinator and he'll probably do fairly well once he gets a few recruiting classes in.

You didn't hear? He won't last 3 years unless he wins 8-9 games every year.

Seriously, I think Vanderbilt messed up by hiring Mason. Morris > Mason, and it's not even close. I doubt he'll be able to recruit anywhere near the way Franklin did, either.

Franklin would have been 1-7 SEC, 6-6 regular season ,without the perfect storm of misfortune for the bull puppies, lizzards, and Volunteers this year.
Still only enough to be next to last in SECe. Kentucky at 0-8 the doormat being the only east team with a poorer record.

They don't have the facilities. Smallest stadium in the SEC at just over 40,000 and they bragged that this year they sold out three times. Their program will not ever, never fund quality improvements. Those $ will have to come from somewhere else. But where? Boosters? I thought it possible that with the $ in Nashville some group of wealthy boosters would at least come up with the bucks to keep Franklin. Hah! Since that didn't happen, all that Vandy has to offer is the quality of education, and the opportunity to play in the SEC. Granted the quality of education is among the best, but what great athlete with his sights on the NFL wants to play in the SEC and lose with regulalrity? The smart kids have lots of other choices: Ivy League, Stanford, UCLA, etc.

The Commode doors are where they've always been and will always be without that perfect storm of injuries and coaching gaffs by their SEC foes (not rivals), next to last or dead last in the SECe. :p
