Derek Mason hired at Vandy

Yes...But a coordinator is still a coach...so...

But there have been quite a few coordinators that turned out to be bad head coaches, Muschamp and Wade Phillips for example. Of course the opposite of that are people like Malzahn and Strong...

Either way, the point would be even though he is dynamite in his current position, being a head coach is a whole different animal in which he could stumble. And we wouldn't know about that until he hits the field.

No, no, no. You missed my point. There is nothing wrong with saying Mason is a good coach. He is. You incorrectly picked apart someone's post. Mason is a good coach. No one said Mason was a good HEAD coach.

We are getting into semantics here. I took the post to have the implication that Mason is a good (head) coach. I countered with him being a good coordinator, yes, but a good (head) coach remains to be seen.

Exactly...I dont think anyone, certainly not Lotterypick, would imply Mason is a good HEAD coach. You jumped the gun...it's fine.

I'm sure Lotterypick can come in to defend the post if they so feel like I'm wrong.

Your taking up for someone else when you didn't need to get involved...it's fine.

I definitely wasn't saying he's a great HC. Great defensive mind and his Stanford defenses have been excellent, but I wasn't insinuating he'd be a great HC.

I do THINK he will be a good one, though. He's got an uphill battle on west end, so is record might not be indicative of that.

My apologies.

No worries, man! Not a big deal at all.

I'd prefer you being wrong though lol

I'd rather see Vandy as a 3-9 or (poetic justice) a 2-10 team next year...actually until about 2032 when they can win four games again.

Vanderbilt's biggest mistake in this process is the fact that they're looking for the "Anti-Franklin". They want someone who embodies an academic mindset to represent their program, but that kind of attitude is the surest way to lose football games in the SEC.

The truth is, it took a charismatic, self-serving liar to lift the football team out of this mess. The only way they're going to sustain that success is if they continue to recruit at Franklin levels, and the only way they continue to recruit at Franklin levels is if they hire a charismatic, self-serving liar.

We hired a guy with 6 years head coaching experience, back to back 10 win seasons, and a top 25 finish at Central Michigan for God's sake, and it was "underwhelming."

Meanwhile, Vandy hires a guy who has been a coordinator for 3 years and it's a home run hire.

I mean, I know they're Vandy. But still. That alone should let their fans know where they stand in the SEC pecking order.

I could very well be. He's walking into a bad situation. This recruiting class will be tough to reassemble and we all know what it's like to have one or two awful recruiting classes.

This paired with the fact they're losing their leaders and most productive players, and it looks like it'll be rough at first for Mason.

I don't disagree with the recruiting. But the problem is many of the current commits might not be what he was looking for anyway, so there is a chance that the 12 remaining are not going to "fit" his new style if he's hired. I think we got lucky in some respects on who we had on the boards already as it's hard to turn down a North, Ferguson, Sutton and Dobbs. I mean, a good coach will make what he has work for the most part, but you are correct, trying to assemble a staff AND a recruiting class this close in will be his first challenge.

It's sort of an issues of expectations. Mason was about as good as Vandy was expected to do. They didn't have months of Gruden fixation to overcome.

IDK they seemed to really overvalue their program during "the search."
