Dick Vitale Calling UT vs Bama on Saturday

He is and has been the biggest voice in college hoops for decades. Welcome back to UT Knoxville Mr. Vitale. The fans look forward to seeing you courtside for a Bamamassacre this Saturday! And thanks ESPN for recognizing that the SEC, not those boys on the other side of the mountains, are the best players in college basketball today!

Never liked his style but there was no doubt about his love for the game. And after i went through 4 months of chemo 2 years ago all of a sudden I had a great deal of respect for Dickie V!

Vitale was a mediocre coach. He got his school put on probation. He stopped coaching early in his career and got into broadcasting. ESPN needed guys like him when they got started. He sounded informed, but was somewhat affectionately flamboyant. He capitalized on it. His schtick did get stale and predictable. For football, it was Lee Corso. Similar characters
My thought exactly!!

Respect does not have anything to do with his ability/inability to announce games!

That means I'll mute the TV, and sync up the video to the online audio of The Vol Network.

Honestly, when he was healthy I grew tired of his cliche’s. But he does have my respect and well wishes now. He did contribute to the game. Sometimes very selectively to the acc powerhouses, which aggravated me. But I wish him so much health and ability to finish his life the way he deserves and wants to.

I've never enjoyed DV's work or communication personality.

But I've always thought I would admire him as a person.
(Though it's hard to tell with "celebrities" because the people who make money off of their image keep those images polished.)

No one in TV coverage provides as much pertinent information about what's happening in a game and what's going on with players, than the home radio coverage team. That's true in every sport at every level, and it's certainly true for the Vol Radio Network.

I feel like I've been getting peak enjoyment of Tennessee games (in all sports) listening live to the radio, then watching the game on video after Freak posts it.

LOL--or following baseball games live through the baseball forum and posters' reactions to the game unfolding. That's a unique trip of its own!

Eh. He needs to retire. His voice sounds like gravel.

gets under my skin now I e gotten older and tired of his cliches.

He is and always has been a clown show. Pass.

Can't wait to hear who had had dinner with and lots of other useless commentary about things that have nothing to do with the game

I was tired of his schtick 15+ years ago......spends most of the game bloviating on random topics.
We talkin' Vitale or Basillio?

I agree, that's why it's called sports entertainment. ESPN (and the others) are going to emphasis the entertainment aspect, big personalities, etc. Dickie V hasn't really been my cup of tea, but I remember thinking he brought some excitement 25 years ago. I respect what he's done for cancer research. I think ESPN is letting him ride into the sunset, which is fine. I don't mind him doing games, I just don't get much out of it. I used to enjoy Bilas, but now he's just a complainer, always griping about the state of the game, physical play, etc etc. He's just a grumpy old man. I enjoy Dane, Tom Hart and Frank Frischilla.

My 2 biggest complaints concerning tv announcers are talking about things besides the game being played, especially talking about their personal lives and not providing information on official calls such as who was the foul on and how many fouls they now have. DV isn’t much help in that department.

Went back and watched the whole second half. Man alive was Dicky V and crew fawning over the Gumps. I thought he was going to have an orgasm when Sears hit that 3 at the last second of the shot clock.
Nothing sweeter than watching their little favorite get completely dominated by Mashack in the end! 😎

And I do mean dominated. Jahmai Mashack was freaking everywhere and everything in the final few minutes of the game!

Agreed. I’m very happy that DV beat cancer, and I recognize that he’s a staple of the game, but he was all over Bama in the second half and completely silent when Mashak hit the game winner.

At one point near the end he made a comment to the effect of “if Bama had just hit their free throws then they’d be walking out of here with an easy win” when the same could’ve been said for us.

Exactly what he said and I thought the same thing about ours. Glad he is healthier, but have never cared for his commentary. Go Vols!
