I haven’t shopped at that brand since they went all anti second amendment. Get woke, go broke remains my sentiment. They were always overpriced anyway in my opinion. For team sports, I stick with Academy, for Outdoors it is Bass Pro. The chain known as Dicks has been dead to me for about five years now

Their ads lately are nauseating. Watch below for a one minute ad for a supposed sporting goods store and see if you can spot what’s missing (hint, not a single adult white male). That’s NOT the way to target your single biggest market

And you felt like it was just a store? You could have literally played an entire game of spike ball on the field before you bought it.

There was a football clinic with 90 kids last weekend, and a summer camp for kids all week this week. There’s a skills combine on the field right now with more events and advanced timing than most.
My kid did the camp this week and has raved about it like it was the most fun week of his life.

If that is just a store to you, I would love to know where else you shop. I’d like to come along next time!

Usually online. We do our sports at actual competitions.

Lol! If that’s what you got from that ad, then maybe you’ve got some things to unpack.

What did YOU get from the ad? Quality of their products? Low prices? Good selection? I myself could care less about the demographic makeup of their boardroom unless it has something to do with the products they sell! When you need some new fishing lures, what is the first thing you consider? The percentage of females or minorities in their corporate headquarters? Pardon my French, but who gives a crap?

Maybe you should know the context that this was a spot made specifically for international women’s day…or something like that.
Whether you’re willing to admit it or not, Corporate America has a lot of closed-minded executives. A company that’s willing to do things the right way should be recognized.

What I’m gathering from a lot of your posts is that you’re unfamiliar with the concept of public relations. In the business world, they’re essential.

Public relations are important, but PR firms these days seem to think that Americans base their buying decisions on which companies have rainbow flags for “pride month”, who has the most minority or gay couples in their tv ads, or who supports or opposes Georgia’s new voting law. They mistake a very vocal but very small woke brigade on Twitter for American consumer sentiment as a whole. Those people are NOT going to impact a company’s bottom line one way or another. Chick Fil A doesn’t have pride banners in every ad and they are the most successful fast food company in America. Why? because they make a darn good sandwich at a decent price and serve it with great customer service. That’s what Americans care about. Not that your shoes are worn by a washed up quarterback whose only claim to fame is that he kneeled during the National Anthem

Did you read that whole article, or just the headline? I’m guessing your point of posting this was to suggest that Ed Stack regretted pulling assault weapons, because of one down quarter. Am I right? The numbers jumped back up in second quarter.
It started as an extremely small family company, so if he’s uncomfortable with selling something, it’s his privilege to be able to do something about it. It’s his store. Just like when he was in the Knoxville store and I watched him make drastic (last minute) changes to expand the golf department.

Nevertheless, you and I clearly won’t be agreeing on politics anytime soon, but that’s fine. That wasn’t the point of this thread. I just wanted to start a conversation about this new destination in Knoxville for athletes and sports fans. If you aren’t interested. Cool. See ya. Be well.

Back to my post of the podcast. I am actually pretty proud of getting the first ever DSG podcast approved and published. We have a real community-focus with this location, so I’d love more thoughts on who you’d like me to partner with.

And I hope you have much fruitful shopping there. Just because don’t shop there doesn’t mean I can’t hope you enjoy it
Peace

Panthro...if you work there, which I assume you do based on your unusual emotional attachment to this store, then you really need to direct some serious training to your employees. Visited the store with the kids today and will not be back. I saw two employees laughing at another young person as he walked by. I also had a clueless employee that was not well trained in his area. I felt sorry for him.

The store layout is well done, but the management is lacking based on the employee interactions. I hope you get this fixed. I prefer to buy from stores even though the prices are often times higher, but not when the shopping experience at the store is lacking.

My advice...take some of those dollars being spent on virtue signaling and direct them at the reason your business exists...the customer sporting goods purchasing experience.

I never go there because I normally like to swing by and check on ammo availability. Since I know their answer I choose other establishments. Dicks sucks 😂

Sounds really cool, I suggest you start a new thread for this. Good luck.

I have two suggestions.

1. Condredge Holloway

2. I was on the University of Tennessee Faculty Club Swim Team growing up.
This is the guy in charge now.

I would avoid naming the pool after him. The Joe Peeden Pool would likely decrease participation.

I’d like to hear more about your bad experience with employees. Do you remember which department they were in? And more about them laughing at someone. Can I email you?
I personally ran orientation for most of these folks, and I can assure you that they’ve all received proper training. I’m very disappointed to hear that some have dropped the ball.

Went in today. My 5 year old made a beeline for the batting cage. She had to hit off of a batting T due to her age, but she loved it. Picked up a new bat as well. My only complaint is that youth softball is a thing in this area and while you have gloves and bats aplenty, you are sorely lacking in clothing and cleats. We will be back.

The Madison, TN store has ruined all DSGs stores for me. The service is terrible, the employees are rude (when you can find one) and they are way overpriced.

Had to escort the mrs to Pottery Barn yesterday. Parked next to this location. Based on the number of cars around and the folks walking in and out of the store I’d guess they’re off to a strong start

No question.
Currently working on putting together a free party on the field to kickoff football season. Food trucks, lots of former players, and live music. Probably some kind of a punt/pass/kick event, as well.

I started a podcast for the House of Sport. It’s the first ever Dick’s Sporting Goods podcast, and it’s all about local sports in east TN.
I plan to have local experts on to talk about opportunities in the area. Everything from minor league pro sports, to youth sports, and even new ways for adults to participate in organized sports leagues.

Please let me know if you have any ideas of people to have on the show. Episode one was Tyler Ivens from The Sports Animal. Episode two will be on youth track, with KYA on the show as well as someone from D1 Sports.
Any ideas are appreciated. Thanks!

It’s available on Apple podcasts and Spotify, as well as here:

I love the podcast concept, and will listen. We thoroughly enjoyed visiting the really big Dick’s. The last four words in that sentence are now a running joke with my wife, kids, and their cousins. Bought a bunch of gear for the kids’ camps and seasons. Tossed the football and kicked the soccer ball. Used the batting cage. Used the golf simulators - kudos to the CEO for reading the room and expanding it.

I would STRONGLY recommend educating your staff about how to get involved with youth sports and rec leagues in the region. We asked several staff, and almost everyone was completely clueless, save one kid who played AYSO locally.

I have a friend who’s a single mom moving to Knoxville in a couple weeks. She’s looking for soccer for her 6 year old, which is a surefire way to connect with other families in a new place. You’re often the first stop for unconnected families moving to town, and there’s ever more of those each day. You can help them make Knoxville a long term home.

Suggestions:

1. Add uprights - actual or painted on the wall outdoors.

2. Interview Scott Stallings and partner with Kids Play Free initiative, and Knoxville First Tee.

3. Do an interview with leaders at AYSO, KYSO, Club Crush, and others about the status of youth soccer in Knoxville

4. Do the same for other youth sports - baseball, basketball, football.

5. Get Bobby Maze on yesterday.

Thanks for the notes!

Already recorded my interview with Stallings. That episode will publish in two weeks. We will do an event for kids where they come play Closest to the Pin with him in our golf bays.

I had an event planned with Maze, but his head of staff just left so things have changed.

I had Crush out for a soccer camp earlier in the summer. I will likely have Jon Schneider on from FC Alliance soon. We just signed on as one of their main sponsors.

I had Knoxville Youth Athletics on last time to talk track opportunities for kids.

Darryl Sullivan, who is an Olympic qualifier (high-jump) and UT student is on the episode that dropped earlier today.

We’re doing a few big events soon for football fans.
Friday 8/27 is a College Football Kickoff Party. Free to the public. Food trucks (with beer), live music (Matt Stillwell), lots of games for kids to play, and several former Vols will be there to hang with the fans.

The next night will be a Fantasy Football Draft party.
