Did anyone really expect Butch Jones to recruit this well for Tennessee?

I actually expect any head coach of ours to recruit at this level. In fact, the inability to sustain this type of top tier recruiting or even recruit at that level at all is one of the main reasons we have been thru a few different coaches lately. It should not be hard to get top 10 talent to come here and play. We are def 1 of the top 10 programs in the country, specifically because of our facilities, NFL pipeline, and support of the program from fans and boosters.

All that is nice and all,but most the kids grew up with the perception that we suck!Which is tru,we have.Nobody wants to lose, plain and simple.People want to play for winners, most elite athletes have a winning mentality breed into them.If I was a five star recruit that lived in tennessee and witnessed the last decade I probaly wouldn't want to come here either.Hell if u were a five star outta state trying to sell this losing program would be damn near impossible. What Butch has done in little time,is nuthing short of amazing.People see the image of the program turning around and are buying in.If butch had not took us to a bowl this year,im not sure one or three of our current recruits would even be here...just being honest. In the end winning is everything......

I'll post this..

"I have tremendous respect for all the coaches in this conference, but we are ready to compete against everyone in all aspects. The velocity and intensity at which we will attack recruiting will be noticed." -Butch Jones."

he said this when he first started and was hired!!

just sayen..

you listen for coach speak?.. I listen to what he is saying..:hi:
BOOM Butches .

I would bet the fans of each of these teams that popped in my head would also state they should have top 10 recruiting classes every year. The only problem is there are more than 10 and that does not count the TCU, ZONA, ASU, OLE MISS, ARKY, MICH STATE, MARYLAND, PITT's etc of the world who are scratching and clawing to get there as well. So to say it should happen almost as a matter of a fact is a pipe dream. It requires a lot of hard work on the recruiting trail. Every other team is out there working against us.

Want to see how it looks when you do not recruit, revist the Dooley years. Especially savor the last one and CBJ's first one with mostly Dool's players.

Honestly I thought he would be a very good recruiter here. I had watched him closely at Cincinnati after we played them back in 2011. I was covering the game so got to watch him up close and even though they laid an egg against us (remember that was before Hunter's injury), I thought that people should watch out for Butch Jones because he is going to land a big time job. You could just tell he had an aura about him.

I'd be lying if I said he was my first choice here. I knew it was a good hire, but was hoping for a big time name. I knew he would recruit well and a whole lot better than his predecessor. I didn't think he would have this much success so soon on the trail though.

Good question! Surprised to see so many being honest.

I for one thought the recruiting coach would've been Strong, and I thats why I was bummed out when he decided to go back to Louisville.
BJ has been a pleasant surprise, he also has been the beneficiary and TAKEN advantage of legacy players and mid state talent increase.

Butch is a monster recruiter and the formerly empty pantry is about to be full with talent.

I've always said TN recruits itself in a lot of ways. As long as the HC is willing to put in the work, recruiting at Tennessee is easier than a lot of other places. I wasn't worried about Butch's recruiting when I was saying he should be hired. Obviously I'm not worried about him getting talent to Knoxville now.

We all hoped so, but nobody predicted doing this well. Butch Jones and staff are incredible.

We have always been a school kids wanted to play for, just had to get a staff that could put us back on the winning path.Win and the recruits come!

I thought Butch and his staff would do OK. Get some better than average players, but not on this level. I'm more than impressed.

I may get blasted for this but I questioned his recruiting ability when this hire was made. Now, I'm eating crow and the job him and his staff has done on the recruiting trail is outstanding. He could become one of our all time best recruiters if he keeps this up. Recruiting is very important when you're rebuilding a program. My question is, did anyone really expect Butch Jones to recruit this well for Tennessee?
Don't get me wrong...I am excited to see us do this well, under Butch. But, he stated himself that he has a LOT to sell here. So, no it doesn't surprise me. People like to rag on Dooley only now that he is gone, but while he was still the HC, they thought he was doing a great job of recruiting, under the circumstances.

The major difference between Butch and Dooley is that Dooley didn't really have the credentials to be the HC, here (no winning record as a HC, for one), and thus didn't really inspire trust in many of the blue chip recruits. Conversely, Butch does. He has a successful resume to point to.

So, I would contend that most any successful HC coming into this program would have had similar success (Gary Patterson, Kevin Sumlin...both coaches we could have had if Hamilton would have used common sense in his hirings).

Butch is a good salesman with great amenities to sell. Facilities that are 2nd only to Oregon (bought with Nike money), Neyland 102,455, Vol Navy, Gameday atmosphere that's 2nd to none, winning tradition, scores of NFL players current and past that come from this program, and continue to help sell it.

So, let's appreciate Butch and staff, but let's not turn this into worship, as it's prone to do.

Coach Matthews says you're all crazy. Our pinhead administration made it too tough to recruit the top athletes. They put the handcuffs on Fulmer and that's why he's selling annuities. Wise up...Hart, Cheek, and the BOT have gotta go!

he is doing this as the team is transforming itself quickly to a national power.. We are going from a bottom to near the top in less than 5 years

I may get toasted for this but a coach that didn't give a duck pulled in a top 10 top 15 and a top 25 class here. With the facilities, stadium, and fan base a top 10 recruiting class should be the norm. That being said. Butch has worked harder than anyone out there to get Tennessee to the point where we will pull in 2 consecutive top 5 classes in one of the worst periods of your rich history.

Even if butch can't get it done on the field, we will have the talent for the next coach.
