I may get blasted for this but I questioned his recruiting ability when this hire was made. Now, I'm eating crow and the job him and his staff has done on the recruiting trail is outstanding. He could become one of our all time best recruiters if he keeps this up. Recruiting is very important when you're rebuilding a program. My question is, did anyone really expect Butch Jones to recruit this well for Tennessee?
Don't get me wrong...I am excited to see us do this well, under Butch. But, he stated himself that he has a LOT to sell here. So, no it doesn't surprise me. People like to rag on Dooley only now that he is gone, but while he was still the HC, they thought he was doing a great job of recruiting, under the circumstances.
The major difference between Butch and Dooley is that Dooley didn't really have the credentials to be the HC, here (no winning record as a HC, for one), and thus didn't really inspire trust in many of the blue chip recruits. Conversely, Butch does. He has a successful resume to point to.
So, I would contend that most any successful HC coming into this program would have had similar success (Gary Patterson, Kevin Sumlin...both coaches we could have had if Hamilton would have used common sense in his hirings).
Butch is a good salesman with great amenities to sell. Facilities that are 2nd only to Oregon (bought with Nike money), Neyland 102,455, Vol Navy, Gameday atmosphere that's 2nd to none, winning tradition, scores of NFL players current and past that come from this program, and continue to help sell it.
So, let's appreciate Butch and staff, but let's not turn this into worship, as it's prone to do.
