Did anyone really expect Butch Jones to recruit this well for Tennessee?

There were people saying after last years class that they were still worried because all the legacy players may have made it easier for him...

Nobody is questioning it now. I promise you that.

I never said that, but I definitely thought it. I'm VERY glad he proved me wrong :p

No way. I thought we had to have a big name coach to get us out of the rut that Fulmer, Kiffin, and Dooley had put us in. I have been totally impressed with his recruiting and program building abilities. I am still waiting on game day coaching ability that would make a difference in a close game.

Butch has done great but expected that someone could recruit because this University sells itself look at the tradition and the very best facilities that it has to offer and 100,000+ every Saturday. When Fulmer was at his prime he and Lane could recruit in top 5. Dooley was just a failure and got us way behind. I have to give Butch credit to get good recruits as early as he did with the mess Fooley left us.
Fulmer had UT as perennial powerhouse and took over after a legend. Kiffin was at Ut when they were one year removed from a SEC championship appearance.

I thought he would bring UT back to prominence eventually, but I never thought he would be recruiting at this level this quickly. I thought it would take more time and more wins. I was a believer after he pulled Hurd and Tk Jr.

CBJ has proven he can recruit but has yet to prove he can "coach 'em up". I hope his coaching proves to be just as successful as his recruiting.

CBJ walked into the perfect storm. Program in disarray, coaching turnover, poor GPA, no support from UT management, prior coach torching instate bridges - the list goes on. CBJ looked at all of the deficiencies and tackled them one by one. First step - lock down the legacies. Second step - have legacies recruit. Third step - remove the Hamilton stink between staff and management. Fourth step - rebuild instate bridges. Fifth step - improve GPA. This list could go on and on but in a nutshell - the man is living proof that the saying, "Genius is 1% inspiration and 99% perspiration".

I may get blasted for this but I questioned his recruiting ability when this hire was made. Now, I'm eating crow and the job him and his staff has done on the recruiting trail is outstanding. He could become one of our all time best recruiters if he keeps this up. Recruiting is very important when you're rebuilding a program. My question is, did anyone really expect Butch Jones to recruit this well for Tennessee?

I don't think anyone expected him to do this well when we first hired him. All I knew about him was that he was at least successful at his previous jobs, unlike the previous 2 coaching hires. Whenever you bring someone on that is a winner as opposed to someone with an average to below average record, that is something you can sell. I think if anyone is skeptical right now they will not after next year. We are blessed to have someone leading our team with as much enthusiasm as Coach Jones.

Disagree. He has coached several "up" at UT. Unfortunately, with a riddled roster, he couldn't coach them all up. He is fixing that though.

No OP. It's nothing short of amazing what he's done tbh. What makes it impressive is he's never been a HC in this conference (or any major conference)and he's came right in and has pretty much dominated. For the folks that wanna bring Saban into this, Saban was a proven SEC coach with his time at LSU so it was much easier for him to pull in these classes. Ill go ahead and say it.....we're on the brink of a dynasty if/when CBJ gets that first SEC Championship and we make the playoffs.

if anyone says yes they are lying. no one could have expected him to come out like this and immediately brought in a top 5 class after a 5-7 year. that was always the biggest concern when he was hired, was how good of a job could he do recruiting.

I say yes, No one appointed you the - know peoples brain on Butch Jones recruiting abilty.

The fact that he nailed a top 5 class to the board last year impressed the living hell out of me. Doing it again this year and staring at a potential top 5 in 2016 makes my pants tight.

No. When the hire was made, I had firmly believed Chris Petersen was the best option. The list of other desirable candidates was a mile long. And since Butch Jones was offered only after Charlie Strong and Mike Gundy had been offered, he wasn't even Dave Hart's first choice.

Therefore, I dare say that if anyone says they knew Butch Jones could EVER recruit like this, they would be lying their butts off. The main question that remains is: Can this recruiting prowess translate into championships? Time will provide that answer, but it sure as hell is fun to watch.

Nope. Recruiting was my only concern when he was hired. I knew he was a good coach but didn't know if he could recruit in the SEC. Obviously I was pleasantly surprised. Now it just seems normal when we get highly regarded players.

No, my expectation was Top 15ish. Mind officially blown.

Most people thought he would not be able to make the transition to the SEC with success. He was recruiting 2 and 3* players at Cincinnati and he didn't have experience going after the elite players. Well so much for that. I was wondering Monday night if Vonn Bell would have been a Vol if Butch had been here when he committed. I am sold on Butch and hope his recruiting brings the championships we all covet!

GO VOLS!!!!

Butch was here when Bell committed...but only for a month. It was probably an early sign of how well Butch can recruit because Dooley absolutely faltered in the Bell recruitment, and Bell at least thought about it after meeting Butch.

I loved this hire from day one. Butch Jones is the real deal and I believed he meant everything he said at his initial presser. Go Vols. And remember, you cannot spell Butch without UT !!!

No honest person could say yes. I mean he came from the Big East. I will admit that before he was hired, I had never really heard of Butch Jones. When he was hired, I thought it was a low ball, low tier hire. I did not expect that much from him, especially in recruiting.

Oh boy how happy I am to be wrong. If this keeps up, then the trophy room will be getting full within the next 2-5 years.

Butch is a great recruiter for sure. However, I don't think it should be hard at all to recruit well at UT. Just get them on campus and let the fans, facilities, and atmosphere take care of the rest.

That alone gets what Dooley got. Butch is responsible for the difference in talent

If you dig hard enough you can find several threads that said he couldn't recruit. Doubt anyone would say that now.

Just be glad we didn't end up with... really anyone else we had previously wanted.

Seriously. Do you remember how ticked off this board was when we were spurned by Muschamp? Its a good thing the fans don't run the AD.
