If these coaches see something special in this guy that no one else sees, that's good enough for me. One of the best players in the SEC last year, Javier Arenas, was recruited by no one when he came out of high school and look how he turned out. Recruiting is more than just evaluating talent, you have to be able to evaluate what's inside the kid as well. Players with a chip on their shoulder usually turn out to be pretty solid players and I'm willing to bet this kid has that going for him since no one recruited him other than Arkansas it looks like. Montori Hughes was a nobody to and he will be a great player for us. I'm glad to have Jackson as a part of our Big Orange family now. GO VOLS!!!

Martaze
6'2 200 lbs

35 vert
10' broad jump
4.5 shuttle
4.59 forty

Lemming on Martaze:

Lemming Notes: Not the biggest LB around but certainly one of the more athletic ones. On Film?#43 impresses you with his all around game. He played more DE than OLB but is better suited to play the OLB position in college. He is not intimidated by bigger blockers, shows strong hands, sheds blocks quickly, and can find the ball. Strong at the point of attack, he can stay low and his elusiveness is the key to his game. His film shows a player who appears to be in on just about every tackle. He needs to add weight and shows the frame to weigh close to 230 in college. Stats?Totaled 56 tackles, 14 sacks, and 10 tackles for losses at DE. Other Sports?Averages 6 points and 10 rebounds a game as an FW in basketball. Grades? His GPA is 3.2 and he scored an 18 on the ACT. Benches 325 and has a 36" VJ

Definitely a redshirt and a project, but I'd rather have to play a guy that the coaches have evaluated and offered a scholarship to than risking it to more walk-ons.

The COACHES watch a ton of film, and they offered this kid. its funny how ppl on here look at his size, forty time, number of stars, and a 1 minute video clip and they think they know more than the COACHES.
Screw Lance Thompson as recruiting coordinator, I vote we find some of these great talent evaluators on Volnation and hire them as RC.

GBO, Congrats Martaze !!

Not everybody in a recruiting class is going to be a 4 star. It's not like we're signing an entire class of Martaze Jacksons. Plus, we kind of need some depth at LB. We're in no position to turn him away at this point.

Saw this info on TOS. He looks taller than 6'2" in that video. I believe the interviewer said he was 6'3". The comparison to Greg King seems like a good one.

two best LBs in the league according to most would be: James Harrison and DeMarcus Ware... now, where did they go to school? how many stars did they have coming out of high school?

My goodness, can you imagine if you were a recruit and you or your friends came on a place like this and all the fan base was talking about is how they don't want you.

We are looking at measurables here folks. Look at the measurables on JJ McCleasky and think about the impact he had on this program.

Not every kid that comes in is going to be a 4.5 LB that goes to the NFL, but if he can contribute to this team in years 4 and 5 thats still a great signing.

Put this kid in a weight room and get him on a proper strength and conditioning program and he will be 6'2 225 in no time, and that forty time just may cut a tenth to a 4.6.

Now if thats his measurables going into his redshirt sophmore year was he still a bad signing? And if not, he can play special teams and contribute to this team and who knows maybe there are leadership qualities in a kid that already gave up his most recruitable position to play Defensive end cause it made more sense for his TEAM.

We know very little about these recruits and to judge them like some of you are to the point of not even wanting them on a team when we will be lucky to get to the 28 scholorship limit for this year. Sometimes I dont get it.

I agree 100%! He seems to be a smart kid, 3.2 GPA. Has good size for a senior in high school. He will grow and get faster when he gets in our S.C program. Has a good frame and will be a hidden gem. Would you all rather have a 5* or 4* kid that has a ego and me first personality or a 3* kid that plays with heart and a team first personality? I prefer the latter. Anyone we get from here on out is comming here because they want to be at Tennessee and we should be great full to anyone who wants to come in to a mess of a situation here. All the big names have already chosen or have had a relationship with other coaches for years, CDD is doing the best he can with the hand he was dealt. Only next year and the year after can we judge him on how well they are recruiting.

Could be a sleeper. If he has a high motor, is willing to work hard and is coachable then he could be a starter someday. Certainly better than a walkon. Which is what we may be looking at having to use if we don't take some of the guys that may have been way down on the board a couple of weeks ago. BTW you guys remember Chris Donald? 5 star stud for whatever reason couldn't get on the field and transferred to UT-Chatt. I believe. That's definately what we DON'T need right now trying to rebuild the depth chart.

Welcome to Knoxville Marteze!!! you will encounter many people who doubt you, even the ones who are supposed to back you up. Keep working, keep fighting, you are going to be a great football player

"I told coach (Derek) Dooley that I wanted to be a Vol," the 6-2, 202 pound Jackson said. "He was really happy and excited.

"Coach Thompson told me they are thin at linebacker," Jackson said. "He told me to be ready coming in next fall. I probably won't redshirt if I show what I know I can do. They are going to give me the chance to play early and that's all I can ask for."

Jackson said the Vols coaching staff told him that he'd play strongside linebacker.

Jackson says he's done with his recruitment and won't take any more visits.

Good to hear, we need some good LB's. Welcome aboard, now we need to get some linemen in here.

:lolabove::eek:lol:

and the coaching staff has had little time to work with. i wonder if the offer wouldve been extended had the staff had been in the recruiting fold a lot longer with other recruits...

By this time it might have been. Monte liked this kid quite a bit and Thompson has been recruiting him for a long time.

Did we get on him before or after Kiffin left? IIRC it was afterward, as our class started falling apart, but not 100% sure...

It was WAY before Kiffin left. Thompson's been on him for a while and Monte visited him.

That 4.7 is not accurate. Jackson ran a 4.59 at the NUC last year as a junior where he won the MVP of the camp.

LV why do you think he only rec 2*? Is it because he played out of position? Also TIFW ALA 5a in that region is rough competition.

I saw Jackson a couple of times this year. First at the Scout.com combine in Tuscaloosa during the spring, and in the Super Six state championship game when Demopolis defeated Russellville. Jackson is an athletic player who is very fast.

He is in great physical shape and a smart football player. He excels coming off the end and chasing down the quarterback. He is very disruptive in the backfield. He will need to add weight to play in the SEC, and I see him playing outside linebacker once he gets to Knoxville.

Tennessee is getting a very good player who flies to the football and just a very aggressive player.

He is well-coached from a great program, and a very respectful individual.
