VOL REPORT: A NEW LOOK ON DEFENSE - VolNation

Wow...every single player quoted talks about how much simpler Janceck's 4-3 is compared to the 3-4 last year and how they all like it because they can actually stop thinking so much and just play fast and instinctual....one player even said the new guys coming in are already mastering the playbook.....and check out how much weaight all the players have lost under Dave Lawson the SC coach...and how much more fit they claim they are...can't wait to see this team play...you are going to see a team with a real chip on it's shoulder come out against Oregon and UF.

I especially expect huge things from Brewer at LB and big man Mcullers as well as Jacquez Smith...these guys are all mega talents waiting to be exposed.....

I've been reading a lot of positive posts from players about the defense..what worries me is that it may be too simple. Wasn't Jancek known for the "bend but don't break defenses at Georgia"? I seem to recall us having a lot of success vs them back then.

A freaking monkey could coach d better than sal last year... the def only has to be top 30 N we should be n enough games that if the off can avg 28 Pts a game to win 8....

True...gotta say tho that I like the "bend but dont break" alot better than the "dont bend but break" of last year.

While we're on the topic of the defensive scheme, can we talk about McCullers playing the three technique? Obviously we don't know everything they want to do on the D-line but if we're going to have anyone play a "0" or "1" in the center of the line I feel like it should be Big Dan. I guess it's possible that he's learning both.

I think we will be much more efficient on defense, but people need to keep things in perspective. Like it or not we do not have the same caliber players as several SEC rivals...(especially on the defensive side of the ball). Don't get me wrong, I think we are talented in spots, but average or young in other spots. I just think it's easy for some to think all of ills are cured, but in reality...we're still playing catch up. I do think we wil "catch up" within the next three years..if not sooner! Go Vols!!!

I understand why people feel this way about the D, but I don't know if I necessarily agree with it right now.

IMO, we really do not have a guage of the talent level on D right now. There were too many negative factors involved last year to get a true evaluation of talent.

Our D in 2011 wasn't great, but it was really young. I think had we stayed with the 4-3 D last year we would have gotten a better evaluation of our talent level.

Just my probably worthless opinion though.

I think we had and have a lot of talent on defense. As much as Alabama, Florida, and LSU? Of course not. But enough to be competitive in almost every game, instead of giving up 700 yards to a Sun Belt school.

Well...we have rivals, scout, ect...not an exact science but its a guage.

If you went by them our tallent level should be top 20...25. Certainly not one hundred freaking 119 like last year.

I like simplicity because its always flexible. Jancek can put in his beef when he wants the run, and put in our pork to pass rush. We will be able to defend more extreme things easier. It's all about how quick you can adjust from week to week on defense.

Also wouldn't judge Janacek just by his GA time. People get better at their job and sometimes a different boss can help...Jones likes him for some reason so we shall see..

Our scheme really hurt us last year. The kids simply never "got it". They will be more productive this year do doubt. My point from a talent standpoint is that we don't have that true disruptive force on the d-line and we're slow in the secondary...and we lack depth. We have Smith who's looked good in spots and big Dan is good at plugging the middle (but needs to hold up on long drives), but we need a few more disruptive players in those areas. If our d-line and secondary matched our line backing corps...we'd be a force on Saturdays!!

No, I hear what you're saying but doesn't it feel like a total different energy going into this year. It does to me...now, I'm just sayin'.:)
GO VOLS!

I agree wholeheartedly. Which was kind of my point I guess. We may have had the talent all along. We didn't have proper coaching last year to be able to judge the talent by. With proper coaching this year we`'re seeing a great energy appear. We may also see greater talent show up too. Attitude can go a long way.

THIS!!!!! Pimpvol you get it

Its not so much of it being too complicated. Its just When you run a 3-4 Defense, you recruit for a 3-4 Defense. We had Recruited and recruited for a 4-3 Defense and that's all our boys knew. If we had recruited for a 3-4 Defense (which does require a different player in a lot of cases) we would have seen more success with it...Also...It helps that Saban basically runs the Defense there and Sunseri is an idiot of a coordinator.

with last year's debacle safely in the rear-view, how can any defensive player not be excited for this season's prospects?

Nowhere to go but up.
