Six senior defensive linemen is a good place to start. With AJ and Randolph they're pretty solid up the middle.

I can't recall how Jancek did as D coordinator at UGA but it must not have been too impressive but hopefully better than Martinez' brief stint in that role.

Butch is a blue collar grinder and I expect this spring to be the most physical in years.

Its not so much of it being too complicated. Its just When you run a 3-4 Defense, you recruit for a 3-4 Defense. We had Recruited and recruited for a 4-3 Defense and that's all our boys knew. If we had recruited for a 3-4 Defense (which does require a different player in a lot of cases) we would have seen more success with it...Also...It helps that Saban basically runs the Defense there and Sunseri is an idiot of a coordinator.
Common VN error. Smart runs the defense. Saban is head coach and works with the defensive backs.

Sunseri must take the blame as DC. But we had no pass rush. No defensive backs. No coverage linebackers. Hard to win like that. The 4/3 will hide some of it like Wilcox did. But even though we finished 28th that year in total D, that defense rarely performed well enough to be considered a top defense in the league or country. We need better players. Butch is doing a good job with that so far. We will see.

We had them, they just were not use right! :hi:

(or should I say, they were not coached right:)

Who was/is the pass rusher?

Who was the cover corner?

The coverage lb ( a must in the 3/4)? AJ can plug a run lane, but we consistently got beat by tightend down the middle.

Randolph was legit, until Teague got him hurt. Other than that, we had no db's.

Simply put, the 3/4 was too complicated for our kids. Bet Alabama fans are glad it was not too much for their kids to "process".

If we got Nick Saban up here, we might pick it up a little bit faster. HE coaches that D, Sal coached ours. Not to mention the fact that as they picked it up over the first few years he was there, they were recruiting 4&5 star players and bringing them up in it. Remember, Bama lost at home to ULM in Sabans 1st year. Comparing Bamas 3-4 with our 3-4 is apples n oranges. I'll take the simple 4-3, which LSU seems to run pretty effectively. Chief's D is very simple, but it works very well. Besides, any defence that is being installed "right now" is going to be simple (cept the 3-4). It may get more complex as the players learn the system or schemes are put together for specific teams. GBO!!!

Dooley made a huge mistake in hiring Sal and changing the defensive scheme. I'm sure he was shocked at how bad it turned out--since Sal was a bama coach. Changing scheme is never good: you don't want college guys trying to figure out a new system. We went through the same BS with the "Clawfence," whatever the hell that was. "Keep it simple, stupid." Sal might have been the worst coach we've ever hired--but it's also true that our defensive talent level, on a good day, is mediocre. We were weak at every spot last year--which was all the more reason to stick to basics. But we didn't. I'm sure we will have defensive problems this year as well.

Last spring everybody loved the 3-4 and crusty ol' Sal, "Know what I'm saying?". Now we don't.

And the wheel goes round and round.

I've been reading a lot of positive posts from players about the defense..what worries me is that it may be too simple. Wasn't Jancek known for the "bend but don't break defenses at Georgia"? I seem to recall us having a lot of success vs them back then.

Chavis has a bend, dont break defense as well. I will definitely take that over Sunseri's bend and get broke D.

Thats incorrect. Like myself much more wanted to stay with the 4-3 because of our personnel and most were very cautiously optimistic about Sal but definitely dont recall all this love your mentioning, thats just incorrect.

LSU's defense works because of the same reason Bama's works. They have players. Two deep at most spots. And again, Kirby Smart runs Bama's defense.

you're kidding right.

everyone falls head over heels in love with every new recruit, every new coach, every new strength and conditioning guy, etc, etc, etc.

people were happy to get rid of that bend but don't break idiot wilcox.

the 3-4 was perfect for the vols. mount mccullers was going to be tennessee's mount cody. there were several other comments about the scheme fitting the players.

The template last year was the N.C. State game. Score early and often on offense. Once we get ahead, get turnovers against a team trying to come back. Worked like hell in game one. But when our offense sputtered around against league competition, our defense was exposed. Then the tables turned on us and WE were forced to always attempt to make a comeback. It is easy to join the masses and scream at Sal. But look at the games. They tell a distinct tale. The only game our defense really blew in my mind is the Georgia game. We performed bad early. But look at the UF game. We had MULTIPLE chances to go up two scores on them (13-7, & at 20-14). Our offense squandered everyone of them. Then they outscored us late for a comfortable win.

Guess it is in the eye of the beholder. I thought our offense would come out and bury teams early. But that really did not happen in an important game.

I understand why people feel this way about the D, but I don't know if I necessarily agree with it right now.

IMO, we really do not have a guage of the talent level on D right now. There were too many negative factors involved last year to get a true evaluation of talent.

Our D in 2011 wasn't great, but it was really young. I think had we stayed with the 4-3 D last year we would have gotten a better evaluation of our talent level.

Just my probably worthless opinion though.

Not worthless...real good points...it's mostly conceded that we're inferior in talent and maybe that's fact.but let's withhold judgment until we see how this talent responds to proper coaching...we might be surprised

You're right. I remember a lot of people saying this was a huge risk for Drools to take with his job on the line (course he didn't care cause he wanted out anyway- it makes sense in hindsight). He didn't have the personnel to run 3-4 and most people I heard say it takes time to install and effectively run the 3-4, especially when you don't have the right players to run it.

The only thing positive I remember is everyone was hopeful since Buddy Hackett was coming from Saban's staff. But that's it.

No. Fans were happy to have Buddy Hackett because he came from Sabans staff and that was pretty much it. I personally knew nothing about him because he was only their linebackers coach. All I kept hearing was we didn't have the personnel to run a 3-4, McCullers or not, and it proved to be true. Nobody could've predicted we'd have the worst defense in the history of college football, but there was a lot of trepidation once they announced we were switching to the 3-4.

Our defense last year ranked 108th. Just getting rid of Sal should improve us 50-60 spots. It shouldn't take much coaching to get us up to 30th or 35th (though I expect better). Decent production from the offense should give us a good chance to win at least 8 this year.

You have lost your damn mind bro. No not everyone wanted Wilcox gone, nor does everyone fall in love with every new coach or player. The 3-4 was terrible for the Vols. The players we have were recruited for the 4-3 and that showed. Plus Sal was an idiot, which alot of recruits will tell you that about him and Dooley. If we had Wilcox last season and stuck with the 4-3right Dooley will still be HC. No way we give up all those points to GA, SC, Mizzou, Miss St, Troy. We most likely beat GA, Mizzou and SC and possibly Miss St. At worst we are 8-4 last yr under Wilcox with the Offense we had. But it worked out for the better with that Idiot Dooley gone. No way we get Hurd or Kelly if Dooley is here and most likely North, Jenkins and many others from last class. Its amazing all the things we hear about Dooley and his recruiting in all the schools, or lack of it. He had no business being HC at a school like UT.

regarding the new defensive scheme, where is the line between simple and predictable?

Talent and ability. A great player does not need to confuse or trick you. He is better, so he will win more often than not.

With lesser talent, you need more disguises and schemes. Because, if not, you and your less talented team will get beaten more often than not.

When you combine superior talent with a complicated scheme, you get the Crimson Tide.
