Did you have a major career change?

I didn't change professions but started practicing a completely new area of law than I had practiced for the last 9 years. I was getting burned out and considering leaving law. I am now happier than ever and doing better than I ever was in the past. Sometimes a change will do you good

I know the feeling. I'm at a bit of crossroads. I have one path that would have me as a lawyer and another that has me in sales.

I really enjoy sales and I feel that I'm better at it than I am as an attorney. The money between the two is difficult to say. The prestige of the legal world is attractive, but that doesn't mean much at the end of the day.

I suppose that when it comes down to it, you have to go with what makes you happy. As long as you can provide for your family, then do what makes you feel the best.

Not to hi-jack the thread, but do you currently have a law degree and considering a change to sales or pondering between beginning one of the two? I ask because I'll be starting law school in about two months and wondered if you'd done it and was unhappy with your career choice.

What was your prior area and what are you practicing now? How long have you been an attorney?

I'm in the same boat. Call it a minor post graduation crisis. I recently worked for a professional sports team, and I've come to realize that I really don't like working in sports. I've thought about going to regular business all together, perhaps maybe start my own one day.

Working in sports is awful. Even people who love it know it sucks.

I did criminal defense and now do personal injury. Been an attorney since 2004.

Yea....defense work will be my Achilles heel I believe. I've been in LE for over 20 years so I'm not sure how I'll deal with that role reversal. I'm not going to specialize though; just plan to hang my own shingle and do small-town attorney work.

Thanks for the insight.

That's what I suggest you do. I was only a paralegal (although I did enough other than sign the documents!!). My first firm I was in general business and creditors rights with an attorney who just joined a firm. We both left the firm as it was going downhill with the economy years back, and he went back out on his own. Best decision he made. I would still work with him if I could, but he wouldn't be able to pay my value.

I went to an insurance defense firm for 6 years and got burnt out on it. So much negativity from plaintiffs attorneys, absurd expectations from them as well as our own clients.

I am now in commercial real estate. So far so good. Low stress and emotion.

This is so dang accurate it's insane. One of my biggest draw backs in life is the fear of the unknown. From my career all the way down to my relationships haha.

I'm in the same boat. Debating between going back to school for a couple years, and taking loans, or staying at my job that I hate, and trying to work my way up.

Nice to have a co captain in the boat. Keep us updated on what you do. I just got assigned projects today that another analyst is responsible for (other position is vacant). I'm literally researching how to do this project as if I'm in school yet you can bet your sweet azz my pay is staying the same. Oh well. I'll throw it on the resumé I guess.

I once considered going to Law school in order to become a tax attorney. I would be the only one in my area and it's a lucrative career. But tax was dreadful in college.

have you taken the bar

I have attempted, but was not successful. Ended up finding my way to sales and loving it. So now I'm at a crossroads of whether I want work and try and grow my career in sales(my dream after undergrad) or try again at the legal field. I'm really leaning towards the sales side, it's one of the few things in life that I am actually good at, or at least I think I'm good at.

A lot of us have a fear of the unknown. You aren't alone.

One thing is for sure, if you are good at sales, the income potential has no limit.

try TV repair, the other one that could boost your income stream is a small reel repair shop

My VCR repair business has not been producing a living wage for a few years now. But I love the job.

You could look into expanding into repairing 8 track and cassette tape players. I hear they are about to take off.

I've found that it doesn't matter how much money you make, you'll always want more. I figured out how much I need for my family and me to be "comfortable" and then focused on doing something I don't hate and not succumbing to the corporate ratrace. For me, work-life balance has become more important than money. I want to enjoy my life along the way, not when I'm old, gray, and retired.

Busted my tail and earned the trust of my employer and now I work 4 days a week remotely.

Every job has something about it that sucks... just find a career and make some goals that are worth suffering for.

Smartphone repair could most definitely pay the bills; I've managed a few repairs myself by just watching youtube so I'm sure it would be a breeze for someone with your technical abilities.
