Ok..I’ll buy the thought we played well on defense against UVA. Talk to me after Bama and UGA. Even Florida, UTSA, Mizzou, and Kentucky.

Good comparison, OP.

I agree, Our defense looks much improved.

Our front line and linebackers looked good - give you that however, the secondary was tested minimally, so jury must remain out on their capabilities till probably the Florida game. If our D front plays like it did this Saturday against Austin Powers, the secondary will once again have the day off.

Normally it’s good to have retuning starters. Not as it relates to our secondary.

I do say it out loud even though I know it is a taught technique. I am not even as worried about how it affects the lack of interceptions. What is more important, keeping your eye on the ball or keeping an eye on the receiver? I’d like to think both, but I understand this technique. What worries me the most is I think it is susceptible to pass interference penalties. Past games have proven this true. Maybe better athletes will be able to use this technique without getting a penalty.
It most definitely causes DPI especially if the ball is underthrown. That's one of the cons. On the other hand you're in better position to separate the WR from the ball and usually minimize run after catch. Every technique has a flaw, even getting your head around. It minimizes DPI but you can still not track the ball in time and lose track of the WR.

Don’t have to read the threads I lived that. Martinez has gotten a lot of guys to the league that’s not really arguable. That said both here and Georgia he wore out his welcome with the fans with how he coached the corners.
Where our team is now, I would expect any transfer to contribute on the field. If they don’t, someone made a mistake in the evaluation process.

I understand that some you are frustrated that the secondary didn’t have an interception and gave up 100 yards in the air.

I also understand that that the same folks upset with the secondary giving up 100 yards passing played high school (or lower level) football for a coach who ran a double wing or wing T that didn’t have 100 yards passing in a season.

This 2023 and some of you are so 1960. It’s very hard in today’s college football to hold a team under 150 yards in the pass game.
This has nothing to do with the concern.
Secondary has been bad for the last 2 years and the few plays the UVA QB had time to make, they did not “look “ like their was much difference in the way they play.
Time will tell

Many times over the years, I've heard the best pass defense is a good rush from the d-line. Give a QB all day (like we did at USC last year), you get picked apart.

2 years???? Vandy, among most teams, shredded our secondary the last three or four coaches.. CJH has just out scored the opponents and is just now turning the corner with better than awful pass defense.

Ok..I’ll buy the thought we played well on defense against UVA. Talk to me after Bama and UGA. Even Florida, UTSA, Mizzou, and Kentucky.
The defense held UVA to 142 fewer yards and 5 fewer first downs than last year’s team held Ball State to, 75 fewer yards and 11 fewer first downs than they held Akron to, and 191 yards and 13 fewer first downs than they held UT Martin to. Virginia is not a strong power 5 program, but those are all cupcakes.

It’s a small sample size, but the defense looks to be improved. We had a lot of fans continually moving to goalposts last year “well they looked good, but it’s just Ball State…well they won but it’s just Pitt…well it’s just Florida…well LSU isn’t very good, Alabama is the real test…well Alabama is just one game.” Let’s enjoy the damn ride.

I really feel for a Vol in Buckeye land. Been there and have a son there now. Again, enjoyed the game, defense played well, UVA was a huge underdog and the score bears that out. APSU will be an even bigger underdog. This thread asks "what is the difference between good and great". You punted on an answer. Good loses to higher ranked teams and defense doesn't perform well enough for us to win the close ones with the points we score...barring a "skunking". If we beat UGA, Bama, and win out with the defense playing well enough for us to hold opponents to a lower score, I will be "enjoying the damn ride". The UGA and USC games last years sucked so much. Beating Pitt, Bama, Florida, Kentucky, Mizzou, LSU, Clemson, and Vandy just barely balanced out those losses for me.

100%. UVA is terrible. Theyll be lucky to win 4 games this year. We'll see against UF in 2 weeks.

Yes 2 years. What happened with the last 3 coaches and players that are no longer here has 0 to do with this team.
Some of those from 2 years are still here and playing.

Disagree. Coaches and players “no longer here” helped motivate this team to work harder, play better, bring in better talent, new coaches with new ideas and we are seeing the fruits of those changes. Very few “players from previous coaches” are still here. The OP and this thread are about what separates good and bad defenses. You took a pass on answering the question. We did not have good defenses for years and last year was much better but still required a ton of offense to overcome glaring holes in secondary and line. I like what I see and there is improvement. When we are playing for championships, I’ll agree we have a great defense. Bama and UGA had and have great defenses. South Carolina and UGA shredded our defense last year. Pitt and Bama were too close because of a not so good defense. Great defenses get off the field, get a lot of turnovers, can stop slants, spend a lot of time in opponents backfield, and keep opponents scores a lot lower than our scores.

You Make some valid points but we don’t win Pitt last year without our defense stepping up the way it did our offense struggled Vs Pitt… our defense took a big jump last year but still had a ways to go… this year another jump has taken place and we will start to see our DL dominate and take over games when the opposing OL isn’t elite… by nature of our system the version of our elite defense won’t be traditional but you will see a lot of TFLs and Turnovers.. still may give up garbage time passing yards but it will be dominant and a lot of other categories…

I do agree that the defense does look better than last year, but I am not too crazy about this comparison. Ball State had a pretty decent offense last year, although they struggled to score, much better than Virginia's and I would argue better than Virginia's this year. As good as the front seven looked Saturday, Virginia's O-line looked completely abysmal and so very slow.

Unfortunately, I don't think we'll know how good this defense is until UTSA.

The difference between good and great defenses? A really good question. I am attaching the 2022 defensive stats and rankings for SEC teams. If you have a great offense, it helps your defense no doubt. We are getting better but, we will not be able to say we had a great defense until we win Championships in my opinion. I think the question might be better stated as "the difference between a good and bad team?" Vandy was the best ranked defense. Is that what we are looking for or Championships? 2023 Team Statistics
