Dillon Gabriel planning to enter the portal

This if we hypothetically took Gabriel I think Nico leaves. I don't think the staff even pursues a QB like Gabriel unless they have 100% confidence that Merk would be the man in 2025.
I don't disagree. Nico would probably bail but if a guy is scared of competing.....maybe he's not the guy. I want the absolute best qb we can have. I don't care if it's Nico or not.

You believe any elite qb is coming in via portal to be part of a qb competition?

Not about being “scared” or anything else. It’s about choosing the best situation.
Well, I led off with I DON'T THINK HE'S COMING HERE. I agree with everything you said. It's not about if I think he's coming or not. I responded to the comment assuming he would sit behind Nico haha

Gabriel to Ohio State possibly?
I don't think he's that good and Ohio State usually has a QB room full of 4-5* guys. I've not looked.

Any chaos in Columbus makes me smile but they've probably already got it covered.

Somebody like Drake Maye might get an "under the table" contact from tOSU, but I doubt it.

Don't understand why he's entering the portal. He was the starting QB at Oklahoma, was he not? Only thing I can think of is that he's planning to follow Jeff Lebby to Miss State.

In any case, doubt he's coming here. We have Nico.
Or maybe USC, but no idea why he’s want to play for that clown there

💯 agree and this is what I have trying to say for weeks to the guys who have anointed Nico the starter next season.

I do think they need to bring somebody in. A top name qb isn't coming. Find the under size kid with experience from a small school to come. They can get one. Heupel talked Gaston Moore into transferring here to be the 4th string qb.....

I think a QB with some experience is a must out of the portal. We would only have 4 QB’s on the roster with one being a true FR and the other two being PWO’s.

I think I remember something being said that there was some issues that he had with Heuple’s departure from UCF.

I could be wrong but I seem to remember reading something about that earlier this year.
Nah pretty sure you’re right. I feel like I remember him bashing Heupel when he left for UT, so chances are he wouldn’t want to come play for CJH.

Him entering the portal is confusing, unless he ends up at Ohio State, Mississippi State, Florida State (is Travis gone?), Michigan, Oregon.

It doesn’t make sense, but it will when we see where he ends up.

There's no love loss between he and Heupel....Will not happen. Looks like he doesn't want to compete in the SEC next season to me and face Heupel.

UT could do a lot worse shopping for QB’s in the portal, given Gabriel’s history with Huepel at UCF.

This I absolutely agree with. Merk will be here but it will be another situation where your best back up is a true freshman if we don’t add someone via the portal

It's kind of a tough spot to bring someone in.

They can't get a transfer that's "too good" or he'll want to compete with Nico for QB1 and possibly get Nico to wonder if Heupel believes in him enough.

If they get a transfer that's "too bad," he'll still be behind the true freshman Merk and you've essentially picked up dead weight.

It is a tough spot. If somebody comes in and wins the starting job, that's a good thing. That means we upgraded and improve our chances at a great season. I feel like some people are so afraid of challenging Nico or hurting his feelings that they would rather settle on what we have instead of trying to improve this team.

I think the conversation with Nico has to be that to win championships a team has to have quality depth and if Moore leaves that has changed the dynamics of the QB room. If they think he is the guy then they should relay that to him but that he will be competing to be starting QB in the spring with _______.

All fair points

Tennessee

Like Mississippi State, Tennessee could be an option to land Gabriel because of previous ties to the quarterback. Josh Heupel, the current boss with the Volunteers, was Gabriel's head coach for three seasons at UCF, and Tennessee could be looking for options in the transfer portal.
As it stands now, the Vols do not have a quarterback with extensive starting experience on their roster for next season. Four-star recruit Jake Merklinger is unlikely to be ready to be QB1 his first day on campus, and while the coaching staff has invested a ton into Nico Iamaleava, he's not as sure of a thing as Gabriel would be.

oh i definitely. They have to be straight up with him. I just mean some of the fans on here. Some people here are really sensitive about the Nico stuff haha

In the old days, I'd fully agree. Getting recruited then getting recruited over was hard luck for you.

With the portal, the elite players can walk into the coach's office and walk out free. Obviously, McCord and Gabriel might be being asked to look elsewhere, but they are not looking, nor will they have to look, to compete for QB1 at most schools. Recruiting guys like that is essentially saying to your current QB1, "Nice try, but we've got other plans."

Schools don't have the complete "you picked us and it's hard to transfer" card to play anymore. The elite players have cards to play also.

If Nico were my kid and Heupel picked up Gabriel or McCord, I'd probably tell him to pick a school and leave because the coach doesn't believe in you.

I think we should look for a QB who has 1 year left and are ok competing for a job and don't want something promise. The QB should probably want to get into coaching and would be auditioning for a spot as a GA for the following year
You have much more optimism about what will be available in the transfer portal than I. QB's in the transfer portal are there because they want to start, they can back up another QB and train to be a coach at their current school.

McCord and Gabriel are starting for top 15 programs. Guys can enter the portal for lots of reasons now.

I'll agree neither of those guys are looking to really compete to start but think about it: what kind of situation is better for Kyle McCord than being the starter at #7 Ohio State? Or for Gabriel as the the starter at #12 Oklahoma?

There's obviously more at play than "I want to start for a good team."
