Dillon Gabriel planning to enter the portal

Don't understand why he's entering the portal. He was the starting QB at Oklahoma, was he not? Only thing I can think of is that he's planning to follow Jeff Lebby to Miss State.

In any case, doubt he's coming here. We have Nico.
Ohio State would make a lot of sense.

So my question to everyone is this……what makes you so sure that Nico will be our starting QB?
Do you think that maybe there was a reason why he didn’t play as much as he did? Maybe it wasn’t to redshirt him? When he did go in, he only played a couple series and Gaston came in. Why is that? Some of you may be getting the cart before the horse. Not everyone that has a 5⭐️ behind their name is a legit 5⭐️.

I don't think it needs to have anything to do with Nico not being as advertised.

More, are there veterans out there thaf provide a better chance than would a redshirt freshman 5 star? And would Nico leave if such a competitor got brought in?

I think that's the real dilemma that could surface.

The move to bring in a proven QB like Gabriel or McCord would be a complete divorce with Nico.

If that happens, Heupel better make sure it works and works really well because he's going to need another QB like Merk to work from day 1 the next year.

With Nico, we can have 2 or 3 years of a solid QB who is seasoned in the offense. A new guy has to get it down and get started from scratch.

I don't see a Jalen Hurts who can be phenomenal from the portal anywhere they go. Gabriel and McCord are good but they aren't generational talents.

The choices currently are: Nico, Gaston Moore, Navy Shuler, and Merk.

Gaston Moore is really more of a pocket guy. He can run a little but he's more Peyton than Hooker. He couldn't, apparently, move past Joe despite having more experience with Heupel's offense. I don't think he's the guy to start.

Navy Shuler is a legacy TN QB. Good for him but I'm sure he's aware of his ceiling and likely very comfortable with being down the chart.

Merk is true freshman. I'm not aware of how talented he might be at the SEC level. I think he's a passer first, from what I recall, and less of a runner. He might have the leadership and "It" quality but he's an unknown, starting from zero in learning Heupel's offense after coming from 3A GA high school football.

Nico is supposed to be all that and bag of chips with salsa on the side. I think he's skinny. He impressed me with his smooth throwing in what little I saw and he's got a little time under his belt to figure out the reads in the offense. I know he wants to show the NFL he can make decisions quickly and correctly and I think that's part of why he sat most of this year.

Of these 4, Nico and Merk will be playing with an eye to impressing the next level. If our starter is Gaston Moore, Nico loses a big, big piece of NFL credibility.

The starter is Nico or we're either very screwed or very, very blessed because Merk is amazingly talented.

Him entering the portal is confusing, unless he ends up at Ohio State, Mississippi State, Florida State (is Travis gone?), Michigan, Oregon.

It doesn’t make sense, but it will when we see where he ends up.
Could see him at Ole Miss. I’m sure Lane would love to land him at QB.

At this point all indications are that Moore will not return. Maybe CJH can convince him to stay but he participated in Senior day activities as a junior so IMO he isn't coming back.

Would Heupel be interested in OU QB Dillon Gabriel? The kid is in the portal. He was sixth in total passing yards this season
following two or three good years at Central Florida. I believe he was coached at UCF as a freshman by Heupel--so our coach must be quite
familiar with him. He stayed at CF after Heupel joined the Vols, perhaps because he was tight with UCF offensive coordinator Jeff Lebby. OU
hired Lebby to be its OC before the start of this season, and Gabriel followed him to the Sooners. Lebby is now the head coach of Mississippi State,
so it would make sense if Gabriel followed him again, except for the fact that Miss. State is not good and Gabriel will not get much exposure playing
in deepest Mississippi--meaning Starkville. We've got Nico, of course, plus three other QBs---virtually none of whom have any experience. I expect
Heupel to roll with the much hyped Nico, but inexperience at the QB position, combined with a tough SEC schedule, is never an ideal way to win games.
To bring in an experienced transfer QB would surely bring too much Nico trouble.

I have mixed feelings about this. There is a part of me that says yes we should pursue a QB of this caliber but by doing so we probably lose our future starter. I hope CJH knows the answer and I would say that after a year with Nico he knows whether or not he is his guy for next season.

oh i definitely. They have to be straight up with him. I just mean some of the fans on here. Some people here are really sensitive about the Nico stuff haha
Too many feels in it, he was already labeled the savior but if he was as good as everyone hopes he is don't you think he would have started this year given the shortcomings at the QB position? Coaches have egos, they want to win now and they'll put whoever they think is the best option to accomplish this. I'm not saying Nico is a bust but I also don't believe what people are making him out to be.

I think I heard a qb out the portal is costing between $1-2 million. Seeing how much NIL money was paid to Nico it’s hard to imagine paying more towards that position but I’m still new and learning on NIL and the way it works

I think I remember something being said that there was some issues that he had with Heuple’s departure from UCF.

I could be wrong but I seem to remember reading something about that earlier this year.
If he has any beef with Heupel why would he transfer? Oklahoma is going to SEC and playing TN!. Maybe he goes to USC, ND, etc.. if he goes anywhere

In the old days, I'd fully agree. Getting recruited then getting recruited over was hard luck for you.

With the portal, the elite players can walk into the coach's office and walk out free. Obviously, McCord and Gabriel might be being asked to look elsewhere, but they are not looking, nor will they have to look, to compete for QB1 at most schools. Recruiting guys like that is essentially saying to your current QB1, "Nice try, but we've got other plans."

Schools don't have the complete "you picked us and it's hard to transfer" card to play anymore. The elite players have cards to play also.

If Nico were my kid and Heupel picked up Gabriel or McCord, I'd probably tell him to pick a school and leave because the coach doesn't believe in you.
I agree but I'm also good with that. They way the game works now, you can pick up a high quality qb every year (if your program is where you want it to be. obviously vandy can't do that haha). My issue is 1. that people assume that Nico is the best qb in the nation without seeing anything meaningful from him 2. people are scared to even talk about another qb coming in because they are scared of hurting his feelings. I think this offense doesn't even need the best qb in the country to put up good numbers and win games. Good decision maker with accurate arm.

I've said this a million times.....I don't think they will bring anybody in like DG. We do need another body in the qb room though

This has been my point the whole time. They also didn't get him many reps in games to help his development. I'm not saying he's a bust either. Nobody has seen enough of him to say either way. We are in for a rough year and a huge let down if he isn't what everybody thinks he is

For those of you that follow this stuff, did any of the top 4 or 5 QBs that transferred in the past couple years go someplace where they really have to compete for the starting job? Did any get beat out of a starting job? Off hand I can’t think of any so if one comes here, he probably is coming as the starter.

Players are entering the portal to increase their salaries. Some are using the threat of leaving just to make their program bid for their services. Does not mean they would necessarily transfer.

Dillon Gabriel would be the starter the moment he walked onto campus.

I don't think he would come here, but I don't think hurt feelings against Heupel from leaving UCF would keep Gabriel from coming here for a good payday and working with the Heupel offense again. If Gabriel thinks Heupel should have stayed with UCF, he should also have stayed at UCF.
I bet there is no hard feelings now.

Gabriel is leaving OU because they have a highly rated backup QB in Jackson Arnold who probably has a higher ceiling than DG. So you either lose a guy with one year left or a guy who you can have around 2 or 3 years.
