DIRECTV to carry SECNetwork!

I called today just to see how much it was and they said it was free and then got 40 dollars knocked off on my bill for 10 months . Happy I switched several years ago from DTV .

I had Charter when I first moved to GA, but then switched to Dish after threatening to leave Charter for 3 years to keep my rate low. I finally got a much better rate with Dish, and I've been happy with them ever since.

I agree, their signal is not as compressed and when watched with the "Native" setting enabled the HD is really better than anything I've seen. Although, I haven't seen Verizon FiOS which is not in my area.

Me either on the FIOS. This is what I found that explains DTV's way of doing things.

First, all HD is compressed, you would not be able to deliver very many HD channels if it were not. HD OTA signals use MPEG-2 compression, which is an older compression system taking up more bandwidth than the newer MPEG-4 system used by DirecTV. OTA HD signals are either 720p or 1080i by the way, there is no 1080p OTA.

DirecTV takes the MPEG-2 OTA signal and re-encodes it to MPEG-4 to deliver it through the satellite (also in 720p or 1080i, by the way). Both these compression schemes are "lossy" so the DirecTV signal can "never" be of better quality than the original OTA signal. If the encoders are set up correctly, the picture quality of locals from DirecTV can seem equal to that of OTA (here in DFW that's usually the case) but sometimes it is slightly worse.

The reason I said "never" in quotes is that often an OTA channel will deliver multiple channels of programming (the subchannels) inside its allocated bandwidth and these subchannels steal bandwidth from the primary HD channel. This affects the picture quality of the main HD channel. If the station delivers its OTA signal to DirecTV via a fiber link, it does not suffer this degredation and so in those cases the DirecTV picture quality can be better than the OTA signal that the tuner in your TV will receive.

On a side note....Do you guys know if Dooley is CEO of Mediacom? It might explain it.....playing for OT, as usual, just to loose.

LOL really?? Okay, DISH Satellite TV Packages & Satellite Television Service | DISH. Click the pretty picture that says "DiSH has the SEC Network." It's right there at the bottom of the page. Or if you still can't do it, here is a direct link to that page. SEC Network

Sorry, I tried to delete my post. I didn't realize you were talking about a Dish network package until after I posted that. I'm trying to find what package you have to have with DTV in order to get the SEC network. Haven't found it yet. Probably just need to give it a few days.

Ha, no worries. I've been trained to think that all replies on VN have a prerequisite of being smart@$$ by nature, so I thought you were just calling me out without having much of your own post history. Sorry for the smart a$$ reply! Lol. :hi:

So Sec Network will be on channel 611 which made sense when I saw Big Ten Network on 610. I would think if I get 610 then should get 611 with no additional charge? (Realitively new to direct so still figuring out their structure)
