Discontinued fast food items rant

Back in the 80's Sonic had a roast beef with nacho cheese sandwich. Money!

Don't know if it is a trend, but our local Sonic is not worth the look when you drive by. I've been maybe twice in a year now and same thing. Cold tater tots or fries. Nothing in the burger warm at all, and you're sitting in your car waiting on it. How can the patty even not be warm. Pitiful.

I loved Shoneys as a kid. Been once during my adult life and wasnt impressed. Hate when something isn't like how you remember. Subway comes to mind as well. Their quality has just went down hill since the mid 90s.

Haven't done Shoney's breakfast bar since the guy in front of us, who already had his plate triple stacked, was double dipping biscuits in the gravy in line and leaning over the bar to eat it. We left. That was our last visit.

I've eaten a decent share of Subway, but it was never a hit with me to begin with. My favorite childhood sub shop was Blimpie. The best I've had lately is either Penn Station or Which Wich.

I may have told you this before, but I have family in Jackson. There's some bbq place there that my cousin's husband brags about a lot. It's in Jackson, or pretty close.

Two that come to mind...Brooksie's Barn & Jack's Creek (On Hwy 100E outside Henderson).

You related to Dinka ?! lol.

The Walmart Mountain Thunder is pretty close to Mountain Dew;)

I still prefer Sam's cola over Coke. I'm a Pepsi guy though. And Cheerwine. And only a moderate soft drink person anyway. When I was a kid, we could only get Cheerwine in NC at church camp out of a drink machine. We drooled for that week every year cause we knew we'd get a Cheerwine.

I've always thought Churches had the best fried chicken:cool:

View attachment 255772

We had one of those as well in my home town. When Hardees came out with Fried Chicken, they were fantastic. The slaw was horrible but the chicken was great.

Not to be that guy, but we weren't dumb. When a certain segment of the locals in my 50/50 hometown were at Church's or Mrs. Winners and passed KFC to get there, we knew who had the better fried chicken. You're right though, Church's was prob a little better.

I miss the rectangle shaped school pizzas with the little cubed pepperonis. My oldest told me they had pizza every Wednesday, so I was so excited to go eat lunch with her one day, only to find out they don't serve them anymore. This generation will never get to experience the delight of those pizzas. Crying shame.

Not to dis on those old school pizzas. They were great. But, if a kid hasn't had those square rolls they served with spaghetti, then life sucks. They had the butter soaked bottoms. We had fights before over those rolls. And one stabbing. nobody tried to steal that guys rolls anymore. We had to sit down, let everyone see you lick the top of your roll, then you were safe.

Lol........you sly dog you. I'd do the same with about 5 of us. We'd leave church service and go to to a famous Hotel here in Jackson. We'd sit there upstairs & talk & smoke our cigarettes for 50 minutes or so and then head back to the First Baptist Church. The only food that was available was at the Greyhound Bus Station.....the only thing there was just candy and chewing gum.....nothing like sandwiches to get you over the hump.

Why did the Olde English Inn close. that was a Sunday trip after church. I was a Freedie. Man the prime Roast. And that Strawberry dessert in that huge bowl.

The Sonora Chicken Pasta was the only item I liked on Ruby Tuesday's menu, but it didn't survive a menu overhaul several years ago. Penne pasta in a spicy southwestern cheese sauce with black bean salsa, slices of seasoned grilled chicken, and Sonora tomatoes. It still pisses me off every time I think about it. That was my favorite restaurant for a while based solely on that dish.

ETA: Oops! Ruby Tuesday is not fast food. I guess I just really wanted to complain about that.

The general owners of Applebees and Ruby Tuesday's, and I guess Red Lobster and Olive Garden, I think are all one ownership group. Anyway, must be struggling corporately. Applebees and Ruby Tuesdays closed down in Cookeville. Almost over night. Well Ruby was overnight. Rumor was the Applebees here had no choice. always failed health inspections.

How good a restaurant chain in an area depends on the franchise owners. Some are good and some are not.

It was strange though. Ruby Tuesday always had a crowd here. Good service. Consistent food. Open one day. Note on door and closed next. Was said employees weren't even notified. With Applebees, the local mgt was not good. They kept failing inspections. Probably forced to close or lost their franchise card or whatever. But, the Ruby Tuesday closing was strange, and apparently a trend with the company. Closed 51 locations in 2018 without notice. They concluded business on a Sunday night, locked up, told the employees and paid severance based on service, and posted a notice on the door.
