Dish or Directv?

Well sounds like you are stuck unless you can get out of the comcast contract. If the contract was with her and she is no longer, would that cancel the obligation with security?

I have Directv. Very cheap deal but I also have a Private Office Viewing account which isn't for everyone. As far as internet service, as much as I hate to say it, hard to beat comcast for speed.

I don't need the phone. The security system will cost me I think 300 bucks to cancel the contract on it. I have ADT for that since Comcast's didn't work even when they tried to fix it for my deceased mother in law. The account was already past due when I inherited the bill. It isn't in my name and I don't want to pay almost 1200 bucks to comcast that I'm not responsible for.

How did you inherit a bill from your fiances's dead mom? They cant go after you for anything.

You had to ask, didn't you Bear?

I wondered the same thing.

We had a similar story not long ago on here, cant remember the specifics, but it was something about a person wasnt able to get comcast services because a cousin had a bad bill or some garbage.

I believe they are both part of the same company

Bundle

Echostar owns Hughesnet. Directv is probably being purchased by AT&T pending Federal approval.

With that said, I dont thing satellite internet like Hughesnet would satisfy his data requirements from what he stated in his OP.

As far as paying $400 a month with comcast. If it has EVERYTHING, then that isn't hugely outrageous. If you combine TV service with alot of channels, highspeed internet, phone and sercurity, then $400 makes more sense.

$400 for cable is absolutely outrageous. I don't know how much security monitoring is, but it can't be $200+ a month.

I had 2 HD boxes, 1 was HD/DVR, high-speed Internet that was faster than I needed, even for gaming and digital preferred cable service and it was $160/mo. I thought that was outrageous.

I bought a modem, and gave Comcast theirs back, got an antenna and a Roku so I get everything but sports that are on obscure channels, and dropped cable. Now I pay $40/mo. for 20 Mbps Internet and $8/mo. for Netflix.

I assume by him saying EVERYTHING with Comcast that it includes TV, Internet, Voice and Securtity.

I have Directv Private Office viewing and have 2 HD DVRs and 1 regular HD box. I pay roughly $54 a month and get about 98% of all channels available except PPV.

Do you still have comcast internet? Wondering how it is $40 for 20 mbs.

Yeah, something is not right with that figure unless he has like a apartment complex with like 80 boxes..............

You can actually get up to 25mbps for 39.99 and up to 50mbps for 49.99

Bearcat may be right. It may be 25 Mbps. I just know it's more than I need.

It's an intro offer, but if you spend more than 2 months with Comcast on anything but an intro offer, you're throwing away money. And now that I've canceled most of their services, they take my threats to leave a lot more seriously and I don't even have to struggle to get reduced rates.

I'm actually really happy with Comcast Internet. Customer service is another matter altogether. Also, paying $8/mo. for a modem rental for a used $30 modem was a scam. I wish I thought about it years earlier! Buy your modems, don't lease!

Yeah, I factored that all in. Should be doable for ~$200 I would think. I'm assuming like $60/mo. for security? Get the Triple Play with upgraded channels and HD/DVR for like $160 and add whatever security monitoring costs.

He must have 11 TV's and movie channels I've never even heard of. No way I would ever spend a Lexus lease payment on cable/Internet!

I tried to talk the wife into buying a modem, but the ones I've seen (the wireless ones) are in the $100 range. If could find one much cheaper like a best buy, would do it. I need to cancel my TV service. Don't even use it but after signing up for Comcast, they hit me with the faster internet at cheaper price for longer period if I go TV as well. Box is sitting in the closet. Right now I am paying $75 for Blast! Plus and Digital Economy, plus the box and taxes. That is up to 50 mbs which I thought I needed for netflix etc. I should probably re-look into things and call.

My problem is I can't get u-verse to my house. Fastest speed I can get from AT&T is about 1 mbs...maybe. I am in a "hole". Couple of houses down from me either side can get it, so I'm stuck with comcast.

Here is your argument:

Honey, how long have we been leasing this same modem? 4 years? We could get a brand new, superior modem for $80 that would pay for itself in less than a year.

Then remind her that Comcast is just delighted that they're screwing you out of that money to use a modem that was obsolete when you graduated high school. Try to refer to them as 'Communistcast' to really drive your point home.

Even if the payment for the past 2 years has come from MY bank account? We were managing her money when she passed. We can't just cancel her account and open a new one. I've tried. I consulted a friend whom works for Comcast and was told that they could try to hold me liable for her past due bill before opening an account in my name because my billing info is associated with the account and will look like I'm just trying to skip out on the past due. Which technically I am.

If the account is in your name or if the account is in a spouses name, they can and normally will. If the account is in a deceased person's name and not yours, you arent liable for it. If it's because of the bank account issue, there's a simple solution for that, use or open up another bank account thats in your name.

Sorry to seem ignorant. I just want to make sure I'm not going to get screwed over in this process and I trust VN to help a brother out. The bank account IS in my name. Which is why they may look at me weird when I try to open my own account at the same address.

You can simple take a death certificate and the equipment to the local office and you can get out of any contract that she may have had with them.

If you lived at the same address as her, you might run into problems by not paying a delinquent bill that you have just not paid.

That is the problem. We do live at the same address. We moved in to take care of her when she first started getting really sick. She had already gotten 2 months behind on the bill and we have just been paying the past due every month.

LOL...I need to do that. I have a $10 reward card for Best Buy...wonder if they have a modem there that will work. Will it just be plug and play or do I have to do alot of set up?

After looking, it seems to me that I would have to either get an all in one wireless modem for around $100 or drop couple of hundred to get modem and wireless router.

Here is a better argument.

"Honey I am going to run to Best Buy and buy a modem. Would you like to go with me."

It is simple, to the point, no need to have a long heated conservation, just go buy the darn thing.
