Dish or Directv?

After looking, it seems to me that I would have to either get an all in one wireless modem for around $100 or drop couple of hundred to get modem and wireless router.

always go the modem and router separate route. In my experience, the all in ones are generally quite the pieces of garbage.

Man...not sure I could convince her to spend the money to do the modem and router deal especially since we aren't having issues with the all-in-one from Comcast.

Any suggestions on what modem and router to get?

Here is a better argument.

"Honey I am going to run to Best Buy and buy a modem. Would you like to go with me."

It is simple, to the point, no need to have a long heated conservation, just go buy the darn thing.

That would work until she asked how much it was ;)

When the question turns into how do I convince my wife to spend money, I got no help for you. I wouldnt even start to entertain my wife telling me what I could spend money on. She would get an apron thrown in her face and sent to make a sammich. JMO

Well, been married for over 30 years. She does the checkbook so, yes, I do run it by her out of respect and for peace and quiet.

I guess my question would be more what do I need to make sure I get technology wise in a modem and a router? Do I need to get the latest and greatest?

I'm sorry, I was under the assumption that you had your own wireless router and were only using Comcast's modem. Yeah, the router is generally the more expensive part. It would still pay for itself eventually. The way I look at it is, if you're ever going to do it, it makes more financial sense to get it done ASAP than to keep paying the rental.

Everybody's financial situation is different. I'm not going to judge.

But I do think that getting far superior equipment and eliminating a monthly fee is a no-brainer. Of course, that's IME.

True. I can do the all-in-one from around $100. The modem alone looks like it would be around $60-70. Router depends on the technology I guess. The Wireless AC looks like it could cost as much as $200 alone.

Unless you hate to negotiate or are the type of person that ends up with the dealer installed undercoating when you buy a car, call up cable... tell them you want to cancel. They will transfer you to a retention specialist. You should be able to get a big adjustment to stay subscribed. They get a ton of their revenue selling advertising. They can't make as much selling ads when they have fewer subscription customer's eyeballs. Just be ready to switch to another provider if the don't play ball. When they ask WHY you are cutting off the service, be very nice and tell them it's too expensive and you are going to go with a more affordable service. They should be ready to make a deal at that point.

That is the reason it is often cheaper to get internet with cable than just internet alone. Cable box's = ad revenue. They don't care if you hook it up, just so they can say they have "x" number of subscribers.

I used to have Direct when i lived in Woodstock and I preferred it. ETC Cable is about as good but i miss being able to buy the baseball package and see all the teams play for the whole season.

I'm wondering the same thing. The contract should be void upon her death unless your fiance's name is also on it.

My fiance's name is not on it but she does have the same last name. I didn't "Inherit" the bill I only meant I took over the payments when mom died. What I suppose I would like to do is to cancel her account and start up my own and I don't want any guff about it. I also don't want to go any time without cable/internet since my fiance' works from home online and the kid uses it like crazy too and both would go sleepless without cable tv at night. So I can't really go any time without service, either. Just trying to figure out how to do this without any time lost.

Why would you take over payments after she passed? Sounds like you enjoyed services as your own under her name, have gotten past due a bit, and now are trying to get out of it by sticking Comcast with the delinquency? I might be off there, but its what it sounds like. Its simple, pay off what is owed, present them with a death certificate, then start services in your name. Its really that simple.

I love my Directv.

I don't have the wireless Genies yet, but that's next. Then I will be able to take my box anywhere in the house even outside on the patio.

I have the wired genie system now, and I love it. My genies are connected to the internet, and I get all the extra features like Pandora, youtube, and Directv on demand in every room.

I will admit that I have Comcast Internet. It is fast but a little more costly than bundling with at&t. If I didn't have teenagers who use so much bandwidth I would have stayed with at&t.
