It's funny, Georgia sort of does something similar. I always just chuckle when I hear them firing up "Glory, Glory" because they seem to forget about Sherman marching through their state and razing it to the ground during the Civil War. Alabama, Georgia, and Florida have odd and annoying fan bases.

Great point, a Deep South university adopting as a fight song, the Battle Hymn of the Republic (Republic meaning the Union not the Confederacy) is indeed a head scratcher.
