DK is the best Tennessee player of the 3 point line era

Lol, I have multiple diehard Vol friends who all grew up in the 80s and 90s with me, who all have the same "but I root for Duke in basketball" thing going on.

What really shocked me about some of them though was - even after Pearl brought UT to life, they still stuck with Duke. Oh, they'd watch Tennessee's games, but they cared about Duke more. Even now, with Barnes and UT being a serious name in the game, most of them are still "but I root for Duke in basketball." The weirdest thing. I can't understand it. I know how lean those years were, but it never occurred to me to just switch to another school like that.
There are some northern Kentuckians who do the same with UK/OSU in basketball and football, respectively.

I think injury is the only thing that would prevent him from being picked in the lottery. He’s a better ball-handling, more athletic, taller, better shot-creating, better slashing, better driving to the hole version of JJ redick (who was a lottery pick).
Dude, your JJ Redick comparison looks good right now. So funny it it worked it. He’s going to be good for Knecht for this reason.

You called it.
In a different post on that thread, I said I could see him being picked around 17. I got lucky, I just know these things are fluid and there is lots of stuff that happens between Feb and June. NBA teams get fascinated by projects that are young, athleticism, etc and sometimes ignore better overall players thinking they can make an inferior guy better down the road than the guy they could’ve draft that may be better player now. . In reality, I wanted him to go too 10 and he should have gone top 10, but as many have said, better to be in a good situation than go 10 sports higher and be in a trash organization, as could have happened. Thrilled for Dalton. Lakers got a steal.

I don’t know if he’s head and shoulders above Houston. Houston played on horrific teams, but he was phenomenal.Inly 1 SEC player has more career points than Houston. That is Pistol Pete. Is the that people feel they have to do stuff like this and make lists . Knecht is great. Saying he’s head and shoulders above Houston is absurd.
Houston was a great shooter, but so is Knecht. Knecht has other qualities that Houston did not. Knecht is a much better rebounder, handles the ball as well. or better, runs the floor better, passes better, and played better defense. I take Knecht as the better player.

Knecht’s rebound numbers aren’t considerably more. Houston has the better 3-point percentage, free throw percentage (by quite a lot), and assists.

"Greatest" discussions/arguments mean little to me....sports, music, writers, etc. That said, my favorite 3-point Vol is James Lofton.

How about Dale Ellis? I still call him the best all around college player who I watched every day, as he carried two mediocre teams to the NCAA's while being SEC POY and an All-american. In the NBA he became the ultimate sniper - I always wonder how he might have fared if the 3-pt. shot was in college ball when he was here.

He didn't shoot outside while at UT. He developed his 3pt shot early in his NBA career

There was no incentive to shoot it at Tennessee since there was no reward for it. Had there been a 3-pt line in college, I think the poster is insinuating that Ellis may have developed that skill earlier and utilized it at Tennessee, where his impact may have been even greater as a three-level scorer.

We'll never know. Ellis had to play post in college so it's likely he never spent much time practicing from that range. Situation was totally different and circumstances were different. Had there been a 3pt line then, he may not have come to UT

He’s the best since Houston , not “head and shoulders “ above Houston. Lofton and Grant were here 4 years, but as far as a contented player, yes he’s the best since Houston.
IMO DK & Houston where better than Lofton but Lofton shot the best contested 3s out of the 3 JMO. I'll never forget the one vs Texas over Kevin Durant.

That was exactly my point. He did everything at UT besides perimeter shooting, and as a pro was pretty much exclusively a sniper. I've always wondered how his game here would have been different with a 3 pt. line. My guess is he would have developed that part of his game much sooner.

He is the most complete player that we’ve ever had…period. Shoots and scores from outside with ease. He can literally drive to the basket whenever he damn well pleases and cannot be stopped. I wish we had him for more than one season. He’s a generational player
Uhhhhh just no. it could be argued he is one of the best offensive players south of Allan Houston but complete? no....Defense....DK is a scorer. An elite scorer he was not a liability in any other fashion but he is not a plus defender or rebounder or ball handler. He is not bad but not great at those things. Y'all gotta chill on the recency bias for real. Overall he is not even a better player than Grant or ZZ. His one year was awesome but lets cool our jets.

Dale Ellis would be narsty in this era.

Come to think of it, Ellis and Knecht aren't bad comps
