Official Visitor: D'Montre Edwards, from Brevard Community College in Melbourne, Fla., is in Knoxville this weekend making an official visit.

The 6-foot-6 Edwards, originally from Charleston, S.C., led his team with 15.4 points and 6.8 rebounds last season, hitting 37 percent from beyond the 3-point arc and 78.6 percent from the free-throw line.

Edwards, who can play shooting guard and wing, is expected to sign at the college of his choice in November. He was a first-team All-Southern Conference selection last season and made the Florida College System Activities Association all-tournament team.

2012, not 2013, IMO, TIFWIW.

Not the most impressive list of schools. Doubt we'll sign him if we can get some of the bigger names to commit.

37 percent three point shooter is solid and so is scoring 15.4 on any collegiate level. Also, his measuribles look good but FT shooting percentage should be better for someone who can shoot 37% from 3.

D’Montre Edwards | 6-6/SF | Brevard CC (FL)

Edwards has a smooth game and can score in a variety of ways. He has a solid mid-range game and can get to the rim and finish. Edwards is also a good defender who has a high basketball IQ. After a very good summer, Edwards has picked up interest from many mid to high-major programs.

I'd like to see some video, but sounds like a decent JUCO pickup.

Here is why this pick makes sense...

Counzo is really expecting to land top prospect in 2013 and 2014. Most basketball players have their list trimmed from 3 to 5 schools by the time their senior year begins. That makes it hard to get in with 2012 prospect because other schools have been recruiting them for 2+ years.

Because of this taking a JuCo on the fence of being a high D1 player is smart, because in 2013 and 2014 a freshman would be recruited over and you'd be stuck with someone who will never play for 2 more years.

So you take an athletic JuCo guy who can compete for some playing for 2 years. That way his scholly is up for a 2014 guy instead of 2016 if he were in HS.

That's my home town. I'll see if I can find out anything about him.

Edwards is going into his decision with his eyes open after seeing how Martin runs a practice this weekend. What he saw was a head coach that stresses, hard-nosed, physical play, especially on the defensive end of the court.

He also found an environment that made him feel welcome on and off the court.

"I already felt comfortable with coach Martin after meeting him and talking with him on the phone, but this weekend, they just welcomed me with open arms, the staff, the team, everyone," Edwards said of the environment.

"As far as basketball, the first thing I did when I got there this weekend was go to the gym and watch practice. "I liked the way coach Martin pushed his players. It was really intense. I see myself fitting in with how they like to do things and how hard they play."

Edwards added that one of the things Tennessee liked about his game was his length and ability to guard multiple positions on the defensive end.

"I feel like I'm a guy that can guard the two, the three and the four and some ones, and I can go in there and get tough rebounds," Edwards said of his game.

Both commits will sign during the early period which begins in a few weeks.

I wish I knew more about this kid but honestly I don't. By his comments, it looks like he was recruited because of defense, which is always a good thing. I think anytime you get decent versatile players like this than it's a win. He can help out in so many ways and be a really good bench guy.

Read on TOS that Edwards game is comparable to Cam Tatum. Why the emphasis on wings? Is Martin planning on some attrition?

I mean I know we lose Tatum after this year, but we will have Richardson, McRae, McBee, and Chievous next year.

Possibly seems like the 2/3's can interchange as well as the 3/4's. If this is the case, then taking these wings seems reasonable. We'll know more with how he uses Miller and Maymon during the year.

It would not surprise me to see attrition from a player who plays on the wing.

My comments were predicated on the fact that the OP states Edwards is in the Class of '13. After looking at his profile, that is not case. This pick up makes more sense to me now.

I know for sure this guy will come in and bust his tail. My really good friend is HC at Brevard (Jeremy Shulman) and he gets his guys to go hard and play through it all. Good get as far as mentality, hope the talent is SEC caliber.

Is that the same guy who coached the Midstate Ballers AAU team? IIRC he was Scotty Hopson's AAU coach.
