Do not hate on Dobbs

Dobbs has a long career ahead. Just because he's struggled at a true freshman doesn't mean he can never be any good. He's been forced to play because of injury not by choice.

Our fans are like fans of all teams. Zero patience and zero consideration for circumstances. These are some of the same people already calling for a coaching change.

Tyler Bray was a true freshman as well, and he was a clear talent from the start. Dobbs has had 4 chances now. He's not getting better. The o line is not in sync with him nor are the WR's. CBJ's job is on the line. He's going to get 3 years to start showing some wins. Would you keep playing a QB that is this bad next year? I think either Ferguson will get the job, or CBJ will do what Malzhan did and go get a JUCO.

What throws has he made in the previous 4 weeks, that make you believe he could? He couldn't even complete a simple 10 yard out route without throwing it behind his WR, and into the capable hands of Vandy's defense. Most QB's get better as time goes on, yet Dobbs couldn't muster 100 passing yards against Vandy at home. We had 53 yards passing last night. Even Rick Clausen was better than that.

Rick Clausen wasn't a true freshman when he played here.

Dobbs is smart and he has a good arm and he's athletic. Given time, I see no reason he can't be a quality quarterback in a couple of years. It's not uncommon for a true freshman to struggle to read defenses or have accuracy issues. Again, he should be redshirting this season and watching and learning from the sidelines, in an ideal world.

Honestly I've seen very few call for a coaching change, but you're right.

I'm seeing a lot of threads being quite critical of Dobbs. Those should really stop.

Let's face it - Vandy had a gameplan to confuse our true Frosh QB, and we didn't have a gameplan to get him comfortable and playing within himself.

That's it, period. Dobbs is a true frosh QB whose coaches didn't put him in a position to win. His confidence should have been higher than ever after two weeks of practice as the guy, and the coaches opted to make him as scared as they were.

PS - We shouldn't have hated on Worley either.
I don't hate Dobbs or anybody else who has worn orange and white or grey or whatever color they are wearing this week....But when I see someone who isn't cut out I will say something about it.....Dobbs can't throw....He can't....Period...That is not bashing the kid that is just telling it like it is...He can't throw the ball 50 yards...Hell I'm 49 and could damn near get it 50 yards and I got 30 years on him...The coaches are giving him every opportunity and he has failed everytime...He needs to practice this off season and try to get better and hold that clipboard for CBJ next season.

Keep in mind he don't have any proven receivers. Josh Smith dropped another pass which hit him right in the hands.

He was also running for his life nearly every time he dropped back to pass.

It's not fair to pin all the offensive woes on Dobbs.

I gave the Clausen reference strictly on a talent comparison only.

I'm willing to wait on Dobbs ...till next year. After all he's a true freshman and needs more time to develop. I'm wondering if Worley is well enough to play the Ky game and let Dobbs be his backup.

Someone told me last night that Dobbs has an injured hand. No idea if it's true, but it would make sense based on some of his throws. Or maybe it was the cold weather, but there was definitely an issue with his release at times, IMO.

If true, then Peterman should have played, or even Ferguson. If a QB has an injured hand, and the coaching staff leaves him in, that's pathetic on a grand scale. They should have learned that lesson the other two times this season.

I can't help but think that Tahj Boyd would be leading Tennessee to 8-9 win seasons had Fulmer not been fired. Sad...

Dobbs just played in his fourth game. Granted, three of those were against Bama, Mizzou and Aubie, but he's looked absolutely awful in all four. As eric said, he couldn't even muster 100 yds passing. He's short, he's long, he's wide left, wide right. Just wildly inaccurate. Even the shots he took when Vandy was in prevent during the final drive were wobbly floaters. He stared down his receiver on the 10 yard out interception. No improvement and no natural instincts. There's nothing to be excited about when it comes to Dobbs.

But it's not a talent only issue. And Dobbs has only been on campus for, what, a few months? And I guarantee Clausen had better protection and more capable receivers than Dobbs has.

Dobbs looks like crap. There's no denying it. But we have deeper issues and I don't see anything that tells me he can NEVER be an SEC caliber quarterback. Just my opinion.

No way Ferguson plays for any reason, IMO. And maybe Peterman still has issues as well. At least Dobbs is the better runner. It's just speculation at this point.

Bryce Petty (Heisman candidate at Baylor) had also committed to UT in that class. Kiffin also told him, he could come to UT but he would never play here.

Accuracy issues have been the norm in practice, from what I've read.

I just think it's hard to judge Dobbs fairly based on a few games. Hell, people were ready to run off Peyton Manning in 1994. :)

And if I would have kept Google stock instead of selling at $200 I would have better seats at UT.

Then we should run a different offense.

Croom run a lazy route and didn't come back to the ball on one int. Last play of game was Crooms opportunity to be a man amount boys and he misjudged the jump ball. Disappointed in him.
