Do We Have Enough D Talent to Stop

Yes, we have 4* athletes across the D. We did 3 things wrong last year.

1- Dooley believed in size over speed. Each year under him we got bigger and slower.
2- schematically we jumped into 3-4 too soon. We had an attacking defense with no speed to recover from a mistake.
3- bad coaching. Bad technique, 2 coaches of DBs, not sure what he was thinking. Safeties and DBs were always out of synch. When we went to nickel we got a lot worse.

Good news is we can recover. Dline can be good next year with good coaching and stripling is A good coach. LBs will likely include Brewer because of speed. They can be very good when they switch to 4-3. DBs will have speed and depth. Size is a concern back there, but I don't think we will see them out of position all the time again. I think they will end up as a top 30 defense again and 4-5th in SEC.

Well as mentioned earlier by someone, we have a good bunch returning in the form of front 7. Couch, McCullers, Sentimore, AJ, Curt. What we lack is the speed on D, I think. The return of Randolf will certainly help. But we do need really good pass rushers and fast LB's and DB's

The back 7 super slow, we need speed.

I disagree. The defense was out of position most of the season ...they were always trying to play catch up . Add in terible fundamentals on the d front ( pad leverage , shedding blocks , bad angles ect ) that generated 0 pass rush with 3 or 4 guys. No secondary in the world is gonna look good with no pass rush .

Then you have to look at the overall schematic flaws. Linebackers would get matched up on slot guys? The backfield would not adjust to shifts on O . Some football genious would have them line up in zone and try to play man out of it ...when they are already 3 steps behind. I suspect that the players had too many keys too which gave them way to much to think about on the field.

I agree that the players looked slow ..but there are reasons for this that can be corrected by good coaching

I will misspell his name here, but Jalen Reeves-Maybin....he will start quickly somewhere. He is a stud!

Lol. Typical of freshmen to start their first year. He will be a beast, but he damn sure wont be his first year. I will be pleased if he can contribute in spot situations next year. EE, or not, not too many new guys contribute in a big way their first year on campus.

We should go back to the Wilcox defense. Our kids were not as successful as Bama's were at learning and executing the Bama defense. Sunseri threw everthing at them and none of it stuck. Then they appeared to tune Sunseri out after they could not play the defense on the field. Although our players were not overly talented, we should have been better than we were. And for that the players deserve some of the blame for their "effort".

D talent was improved when CBJ walked through the door, fired Sal, and put us back to the 4-3. It's a no brainer that the D can only improve from where it was. The better question is, what's the outcome for the O with the recent changes?

Under Jones, the defensive guys will be better conditioned and this is where they appeared much slower, out of place, and some even got injured. Group all that with Dooley's not wanting to play certain players because of how he felt personally and you have all your answers. There is speed back there! Not elite speed, but speed. Watching, you could just tell those guys were trying to make something work that just wasn't going too and that's when I gave in on Dooley. Those kids never had a fighting chance.

I think McNeil will be a stud, I'm not so sure about O'Neil.

I am afraid we don't have enough speed in the secondary to play man defense which will hurt us against the teams which run the ball well. We also need more speed at the LB position. It will take a couple of classes to get the speed we need on defense.

We have 1 good player on defense... AJ... Other than that, we are not very good.. I don't see anybody else starting on UGA,LSU,BAMMER,Fla,ETC. Maybe Mccullers. But, we were terrible last year, We can only get better, don't think it can get worse.

Had we went to zone defense and just played to keep the ball in front of us it would have made a difference. The players would be more comfortable and there would have been fewer big plays. The blitzing etc is exciting but we could not get to the QB ever.

lets see are safety and corners tried to bump tackle people instead of wrapping up ( if you scared dont plat the game ) 3-4 defense was new and lets be honest thats a tough scheme to learn ( and we are not harvard ) and then sometimes we scored to fast (if thats a bad thing ) and defense was wore out late.

I don;t know goat....Janzen did it.

This dude...he is the real deal. But we may need him on offense...?

I vote to start him on both sides of the ball as a true freshman.....lol!

We have a couple of good safety candidates in the mix.

Cornerbacks...that is the real problem!

The problem on D was a combination of many things, coaching, not enough punishing windsprints after each awful performance, not enough squats/hammy curls + more wind sprints, and coaching. And contrary to popular couch coach speak, you can train/teach speed.

You can improve speed, but you can not teach it. They either have it or they don't.

I'd be interested to see Lou Holtz repeat this..

Unfortunately this is the only team we can be certain of. Anyone else in the SEC and most of the rest of the NCAA is better.

Nope. Butch beat Vandy with a less talented (albeit far more disciplined) defensive squad at Cincy

we switched to a very complex scheme with a brand new def coordinator who has mostly been a position coach. Pretty much a boom or bust gamble and we busted bad.

Watched 5 games in person this year and these kids were definitely doing to much thinking and not enough playing which will slow you down. Bad adjustments, woefully out of position, etc.. which we all saw. Had Wilcox stayed this team had a good shot at 9 wins but it is what it is.

CBJ is recruiting speed in the db backfield and the new def coordinator along with CBJ has said that they like to keep things simple on D so players make plays (appears they saw the same d on film we saw last year) Pride can be a good thing as well as bad. My gut tells me it will be a good thing and UT bounces back into the top 5 of the SEC next year. We will all moan and groan wishing we had this past years off to go with our much improved def.

How much of the year was Curt playing with a hurt shoulder? Was he having to have surgery or anything this off season?

He hurt his shoulder halfway through the NC state game but also played that game with a turf toe injury. He played with both injuries nagging him the rest of the year.

Blew out his ACL(I believe) in the Missouri game just when he was nearing 100%.

Anybody, when did he have surgery on his knee?
