Do We Have Enough D Talent to Stop

I'm sure this has already been talked about but who are we looking at @ the corner positions? Coleman and Bonner?

There's talk that Gray is gone but apparently that's just talk.

The biggest problem with our defense last year was our offense. You'd be amazed by how interdependent the two are on each other. If you have a great offense, you can usually expect your defense to collapse.

Expect a massive improvement by default.

You can improve speed, but you can not teach it. They either have it or they don't.

It's all about proper technique which can be taught. There are specific motions and form required for sprinting correctly and maximizing speed. Granted some natural ability has to be there but agility training and proper form can go a long way in developing explosive sprinting.

How about just having an offense that can get a few first downs? That alone will help out the D.

The problem on D was a combination of many things, coaching, not enough punishing windsprints after each awful performance, not enough squats/hammy curls + more wind sprints, and coaching. And contrary to popular couch coach speak, you can train/teach speed.

at 18+ year old player you will NEVER EVER EVER EVER be able to take a guy that runs a 4.8 and bring him down to a 4.5...

lets be even more realistic....you won't even be able to bring him to a 4.74

Yes, with good coaching, we can be a middle of the pack defense. The good news...we return a lot of players. The bad new...we return a lot of players.

On the line, McCullers, Couch, Sentimore, J Smith, Miller, Hood...all seniors.

AJ is an excellent linebacker. Curt has a chance to be good. From the ones who played in the front seven, Herman is the only one we lose. He was trying hard but slow.

Randolph returning will be key to the secondary. We need for someone to step up. Or bring in a couple of juco's to fill those spots. Bonner or Gray could be a corner. Coleman will benefit from good coaching. O'Neal can be a stud.

We probably have 4-5 NFL players in that mix, so there is some talent there.

On paper we look like a top caliber SEC defense. In reality we have 11 turnstiles that can't tackle, run or defend the pass. An average defense supporting our awesome offense would have won the East

Arian Foster went from 4.71 to 4.58 so your post is ...well...BS

Yes, and apparent speed vs. apparent slowness also relates to ability to read the game and anticipate where you'll need to be, versus starting off in the wrong direction then desperately trying to play catch-up vs. SEC athletes.

We had enough talent in 2011 to stop people.

We haven't lost much since then, we should be better than last year, but I can't see us being dominant on defense for at least two more seasons.

we switched to a very complex scheme with a brand new def coordinator who has mostly been a position coach. Pretty much a boom or bust gamble and we busted bad.

Watched 5 games in person this year and these kids were definitely doing to much thinking and not enough playing which will slow you down. Bad adjustments, woefully out of position, etc.. which we all saw. Had Wilcox stayed this team had a good shot at 9 wins but it is what it is.

CBJ is recruiting speed in the db backfield and the new def coordinator along with CBJ has said that they like to keep things simple on D so players make plays (appears they saw the same d on film we saw last year) Pride can be a good thing as well as bad. My gut tells me it will be a good thing and UT bounces back into the top 5 of the SEC next year. We will all moan and groan wishing we had this past years off to go with our much improved def.

Frank Broyles, the old Arkansas coach, used to refer to the problem you cited, with respect to this year's defense, as "paralysis by analysis."

Run D will be fine when we have speed in the DB's. we are more suited in the 4-3. Lack of depth was a big issue last year on D IMO.

Sal might have been the worst coordinator hire in UT history--barely nudging the second worst disaster, Sanders.

Maggitt, Johnson, Couch, Miller, Walls, Randolph, Moore, McNeil, and Bonner each have the potential to be very good players and could benefit from a coach that can well...coach.

It'll also be interesting to see how Oliver, Orta, Thomas, Harris, Bynum, O'Brien, Williams, and McCullers develop this year (I list McCullers here because he honestly could be both interior DL in the 4-3 ha). And of course there are the new recrutis.
