Do you believe in an Official US Language...

Should we have an Official Language??

No, but make them learn English.

Make them? Sorry I guess I missed that power of the government in the Constitution. Sounds more like the Russians within the old Soviet Union forcing every ethnic group to wipe out their culture and only speak Russian under penalty of death.

We are? Funny, you think the indians all spoke the same language and went around getting along peacefully with each other?

No, I don't. But to say "they should learn the language" when our ancestors made no attempt to do the same in their respective areas, is hypocritical.

I think there should be an offical language for use in how government conducts their business. Other than that, I don't care.

English is the de facto language as of now. Don't tell anyone but that evil 'amnesty' bill actually had this in there to make English the official language.

You must have missed the sarcasm part.

i am a descendant of native americans as well, and i think that making english the official language is pointless. It is already required that someone who wishes to become naturalized know English, what more do you need? Should we kick the French speakers out of Louisiana, and the Hawaiian speakers out of Hawaii?

Funny you should say that because you were defending a bill that would naturalize 12-20 million or more people that don't want to learn English in the first place and don't want to assimilate. So that's not a valid statement with respect to the rest of the post.

I don't say that. I say make it the offical language for things done by government. I don't care to force anyone to learn anything.

sorry, it was not so much a reference to you, it seems to be a pretty common sentiment, however.

Exactly. No reason I should have to press a number when calling from within the United States to get the language 94% of ALL American's speak "well" or "very well". Other than that, its up to the business. Although if a business chooses to not do business in any other language but English then people shouldn't be able to chastise them for being "politically incorrect".

i think CSpin already touched on that, the bill would not have changed the fact that they still would have had to learn english to naturalize, in fact english would have become an official language.

and i supported amnesty, not the bill as a whole. i dunno where you got that.

That's the problem. They DON'T want to learn English and they DON'T want to assimilate to America as a whole.

so it pains you terribly to have to press one when checking your balance? over 10% of the people in the country speak Spanish, I think that is enough to warrant a "prensa dos" option.

Really? You polling the illegals? Many do learn the language and many do assimilate. Many illegals actually came here legally to work or study and just never either went home or renewed their visas. So obviously those knew the language and were able to assimilate.

This topic gets me so upset I have to be careful what I say.:realmad: I don't think it is too much to ask that these people coming to OUR country learn OUR language. I realize 90% of them will NEVER assimilate and embrace OUR values, but gosh damn, LEARN English already! Try going to Mexico or Iraq and demand that they speak English, they would :machgun: you! Why should we have to be respectful of other countries ways when no one is of ours? What a pathetic double standard! I’m gonna :puke5:

Yeah, they aren't trying to radically change the fabric of American either. Now are they?!? Come on CS, gotta try harder than that.

I realize this comment will be highly controversial but I am going to say it nonetheless.

Well in another 20 years anyone who is white and speaks English really, really better watch their back. You are so naive. The idea now is that we need to learn spanish, not that they need to learn english. Come to California and spend some time in numerous towns. Are a lot of these illegal immigrants terrible people? No. But do they give a damn about the future of this country?

Take care CS. You have really pushed me into a depression with your irrational naiveté. I need to go see my psychiatrist now.
