Do you expect Nico to play much this year?

My friend and I disagree a little about when Nico might play. My buddy thinks Milton will be on a short leash and if he has a bad half in a crucial game, Heupel will put in Nico to possibly replace him as the full time starter. My thought is Milton is going to have to be injured or really stink it up 2-3 straight games before he gets pulled. (All this is assuming Nico is ready to go)

That said, I think Milton should have a great season. He has the physical talent, wrs, and offense to succeed. He looked great last year when he played. I'm hoping his 2 years with Heupel has improved his defensive recognition, decision making, and all the other intangibles that good coaching can fine tune. If so, he'll be a 1st round draft qb and Nico should just get mop up duty this year.

Enough to get him significant snaps in case Milton gets knocked out...like Milton the last two seasons. Can't replicate game speed and timing with the receivers in practice. The redshirt option doesn't disappear if it's not used and I'd rather have it available in case of an injury to himself along the way. Since I don't see him being here beyond three years unless he's disappointing. Redshirts are for players that aren't ready immediately and/or need 2-3 years...ala Brian Grant.

Unless Joe Milton III (Our STARTING QB) does not do well, he will play in the maximum 4 games and then redshirt. NIL has removed some of the urgency for young players to jump ship early. He knows the team is his next year at worst.
If Nico is the quality everyone thinks he is he will be entering the NFL draft upon completing his junior year. Why on earth would a Redshirt be considered?

We saw the script last year with Milton backing up Hooker, we will see if play out the same way this year, barring any injuries or lackluster play.

With the transfer portal, I wouldn't be concerned with burning a redshirt. Why save it for some other team if the player transfers out. Just my 2 cents....

Believe CJH knows that putting all our eggs in one basket is not such a good idea, esp when you play in the SEC. Injuries and cold streaks happen, so my guess is that Nico Suave will be injected into the 4th quarter of games we are comfortably ahead. Crazy not to do that, as we need a backup hot off the bench, not cold off the bench. Go Vols

The reality is any time you have a QB that can run the chances of him staying healthy all year are pretty slim. I hope Nico gets some mop up duty in before the nearly inevitable injury comes. And I hope when that injury happens it's not serious and only 1-2 weeks.

Nico didn't come here to redshirt and I don't think that would be the plan for a guy you're paying $8M in NIL money. This is a tough SEC season coming up and it's likely Joe gets banged up a little in the process. We're going to need him. Look who's behind Nico in the QB room. No disrespect, but his tangibles far exceed anyone behind him and he's picking it up quickly. Gaston Moore could be a decently serviceable QB, but isn't going to pull us through the heart of an SEC season. I'm betting we see Nico a lot vs. UVA, APU, UConn and Vandy for sure. I also think if we can salt SCar, KY and UTSA away by the end of the third qtr, we will see him in those game too. If things go well down in Gainesville, it won't surprise me to see him come in late there either. We gotta have him clicking to start the 2024 season. As many live reps as possible is crucial for him this year, not a redshirt.

This is the 3rd time Milton has been named starting QB. The first 2 times he was replaced be backups.. Nico may become the starter during or after the Florida game.

Joe stayed with the Vols, worked to improve his game, supported and helped Hendon Hooker, and was a good teammate. If he is getting the job done, he deserves the mass majority of the snaps. I think he has earned it. Nico and Gaston need some snaps as well, but not at Joe's expense if he is playing lights out. I don't think the redshirt matters. If Nico can play in twelve games while still being fair to Joe, that's fine with me.

Heck with he and Milton being our only two scollarshipped qbs ( I think?), I’d be too scared to let him out of the garage. Play Moore and Shuler, and don’t let him get dinged up unless necessary. But if necessary, you fire that sucker up and punch it.

I’d say it will land in the middle I think jm3 leash is longer than your frien but shorter than yours

I hope Nico plays in every 4th quarter but doesn’t start till his sophomore season i don’t see him redshirting for the simple fact that dont need to risk Joe Milton getting hurt by keeping him in

I expect he'll play to not burn his redshirt unless necessary. Mostly mop up duty like Milton last year
Nico isn’t redshirting this year. No matter if he redshirts or not, he is most likely going to NFL after 3 years. He will be the #2 QB this season and will get reps in every game possible. We also have Merklinger coming in and is considered an elite QB as well. Why would you want Merklinger and Nico both Freshmen athletically? Also I expect the Vols to be major players for George MacIntyre (#2 QB per 247) and Deuce Vaughn (#10 QB per 247). Also Nico brother Madden(#12 QB per 247) has also been offered by the Vols and in the 25 class. UT has plenty of options going forward at QB and have no need to Redshirt Nico.

Nico isn’t redshirting. He is most likely gone after his junior year anyways, so why redshirt? Play him as much as possible to prepare him for next year. Look at who we have coming in the 24 and 25 class. Merklinger is the #11 QB in country in the 24th class and committed to UT. Heupel is trying to take 2 QB’s in the 25 class. The Vols are serious players for MacIntyre #2 QB, and Deuce Vaughn #10 QB in the country. They have also offered Nico brother, Madden and he’s the #12 QB per 247. The QB position appears to be on really great shape going forward. No need to redshirt Nico unless he gets hurt.
