Do you thing Cuonzo has questioned his job security at any point?

Cuonzo's not stupid. He is aware of the success the program experienced under Pearl, and he is aware that missing the NCAA tournament every year can only hurt his job security over time. I have no doubt that a tiny bit of concern has crept into his mind given the preseason expectations and the disappointment from the previous two seasons. However, he is never going to spend any time talking about it publicly (no sane coach would), and he is certainly not going to let it negatively affect his motivation.

You've definitely got to have thick skin to be a coach at this level. Cuonzo mentioned the great atmosphere at the beginning of his press conference after the Missouri game, and in the back of his mind you know he was thinking that several thousand of the fans in attendance probably signed the "we want Bruce Pearl back" petition. :)

I remember when we hoped to win 10 games in a season, so winning 20 and being on the verge of the NCAA Tourney is not what I consider firing material

I remember before that when we were a bubble team almost every yr under Devoe.....those yrs sucked too.

yes, he's human. I've worked around coaches that have had the threat of being let go hanging over their head and they did talk about it. But the good ones don't let it consume them, but motivate them.

No. Most of this is Fan and Media driven. If he has felt the need to question it, then that means it maybe time for him to go.

IMO him questioning his job security versus feeling the pressure to get it done are not related.

Does he personally feel comfortable in his job, I hope not because if he does then it is also time for him to go.

Again he eliminates 2 of the 3 bad losses he seems to accumulate every year along with the bubble status and we are not having this conversation.

Plus too many Nostrodamuses in here talking about next year when this year is not complete. A run in the tournament can change everything.

351 teams in NCAA D1. In a down year, there are still 5 SEC teams in the top 50 BPI index.

Don't you think that's a bit extreme?

Ok, one of the worst leagues that we should be compared to, and worse than some a rung lower.

Somebody has to sticky a rule if we are no longer exagerating for emp phas is.

I think Cuonzo had to question his job security. The Bring Back Bruce petition has been all over the local media. I would think he and Hart has had a little chat. I do think he does get another year. His team has played extremely well the last three weeks. Too bad they have not playd well all season. I think it would be difficult to fire him now.

He does keep up with some of it because he admitted to hearing Maymon's comments on the radio.

But media discussion aside, just from a pure performance aspect, do you think he's ever considered the idea that he may not be meeting the expectations of the university and worried that his job may be in jeopardy?
You have got to question what exactly are the expectations placed upon him by the higher ups at UT? We know what the fan bases expectations are, and we know basketball takes a back seat to football. Maybe he was told all he needs to do is keep the program respectable like he has, with a tourney bid every 3-4 years. I tend to believe he would of been told something more along the lines of that, besides you have got to match the success of Bruce Pearl.

You are exactly right on both counts...by the way which sy-LLA-ble do you prefer?

My understanding is he was a stone cold hearted shooter in college and seemed to be able to score without being distracted some personalities are able to keep a cool calmness even in the eye of a storm. Maybe that is CCM?
There is an old Arab saying. "The dogs may bark, but the caravan continues to move forward"
That being said I am not happy with his performance but hope he will be the surprise of the Tourney.

I don't think Martin's job is in jeopardy as much as some here do---right or wrong. Considering where his salary ranks in the conference compared to the number of games he's won, Cuonzo has been a good value for the athletic department---although you could argue the impact of ticket and memorabilia sales on the bottom line.

Regardless of my opinion, I just wonder if Cuonzo has felt at any point like his job is on the line?

I heard a comment com him the other night in response to Maymon and some other players sticking up for him in the media and he responded with:

"They don't need to fight, there's nothing to fight about. We are playing basketball and winning ball games. We keep moving. Anything outside of that I don't waste time and energy on it."

Thoughts?

Is he aware that some in the fan base are unhappy, probably.

I don't think that's what you are asking, though. Does HE feel like his job is on the line?

I doubt it, from his perspective, he's in his third year of a five year deal and he's won at a respectable level through two years, this year has to play itself out.

He knows the goal, the expectation, is to make the tourney, just as it is for every coach. That's not all there is to it, however, and he knows that too.

When he says he wastes no energy on negativity, I believe him 100%.

It's hard to get a pulse out of him any time. I would hope that he was aware of the situation and cared that he has lost the fan base's desire to have him as UT's coach. Really, what is he suppose to say though. There's a petition that has spread through the media like wild fire to bring back the coach that drug UT through the mud. There are fans hoping that he loses his next game just so he will be fired. Nothing he can really say at this point.

I deleted my reply.

What if UT loses Friday?

I'm sure a fleeting thought may have crossed his mind, but I think that most coaches truly believe they can turn the ship around until the bitter end no matter what the circumstances.

Why would any coach worry about job security when he has a golden parachute(by out clause)(?). :roll eyes:

I love this place because it is great to vent. We stir up a lot of clamor in here and for the most part it just banter. Try drinking whiskey and posting is when it becomes testy for some.

My point is for the most part, nobody really knows for sure what's going on, but we speculate and must always remember there are trolls in our midst. When we start taking some of these posts serious is when we have serious problems with ourselves not the others that are posting information.

And yes we do have those that know everything about everything that you might as well be trying to knock down Hoover Dam with a plastic hammer.

The other segment that trash this coach out or any other would be the first person kissing his backside if he were to sit down in person or interview him. Kind of like Clay Travis syndrome with DD. I guess best way to describe it, is that it's a Village.

Anybody got any inside information that has not been disclosed. The facts are there, but the private conversations and the human factors are not.

Great Question OP, see I am Kissing Freak's backside.
