Dobbs

I 99% agree with you.

There is no denying that he regressed weekly as a starter in both places last season. NFL DCs know what they are doing.

But, there is 1% of me that wonders if he started for a team like the Niners if he might be able to at least do what Purdy does. Be a game manager who makes enough plays to help his team win.

In any event, he needs to establish himself as a solid #2 first.
Purdy was in the MVP conversation for awhile last year

Understood. However, being the march to a different drummer person I am, history has a repetitive trend. Truly talented people often aren't recognized, nor appreciated, until we no longer have them. Trend buckers, nonconformists, ahead of their timers etc. I guess you could say, some folks are too special, so suffer being disparaged, and even ridiculed during their time. Only later do folks realize how unusual they were.

They are the Van Goghs, Fran Tarekentonss, Robert Goddards, Hedy Lamarrs, and more. Not taken seriously until after their time.

Purdy Comments.
That's usually a bit tougher with sports. For instance Tark went to 9 Pro Bowls and won MVP '75.

He was also dayumed for not staying in the pocket to run designed plays. His nickname "Fran the Scram" was originally meant as an insult. But like Josh, Fran was who he was.

IIRC, his coach finally stopped trying to mold him into something he simply wasn't.

He’s still not “all that.” IMO, his skill set is not worlds apart from Dobbs.

It will be very interesting to see how the Niners play the Purdy extension issue when it comes due. I cannot see them paying him 50+ per season.

Oh I agree, especially at first his scrambling style was, especially for the time, pretty unconventional. I was just pointing out how 9 PB's and an MVP doesn't particularly sync up well with "aren't recognized, nor appreciated".

Seems we're saying the same thing in different ways.
Tom Laundry had the same issue with Roger Staubach, BTW.

Yes, it will be interesting, but their next option won't be Dobbs as QB1 of the future

Notice what happened last year when teams started scheming against him. He can be a reliable backup, but that's it

Also notice what happened when the QBs who replaced him on those teams played. They didn't fare any better than Dobbs. So was it a Josh Dobbs problem or a Arizona Cardinals/Minnesota Vikings problem? Kyler Murray is a former #1 overall pick and $100 million QB and he didn't do any better with the Cardinals last year than Dobbs did.

I just think Dobbs was dealt a bad hand last year. He was joining teams in the middle of the season and expected to start the next week. He also was on some of the lesser talented teams in the league. Even Patrick Mahomes would struggle if he had to play for the Arizona Cardinals last year.

This situation in San Francisco is different. They're a loaded team with a offensive mastermind of a head coach that has been known to make QBs look better than they really are. If Dobbs gets an opportunity here I could see him going off and looking like the guy we all saw at Tennessee. An elite playmaker at the QB position.

And yet everyone still thought he wasn't that good.

Shannahan has a way of making QBs better than they really are. He had Jimmy Garappolo looking like a solid starter, Matt Ryan looking like an MVP, and RG3 looking like he was better than Andrew Luck. It's what he does. I think Brock Purdy is a below average NFL QB that looked above average thanks to the supporting cast and Shannahan.

Give Dobbs that team and that head coach and he could look like 2015 Cam Newton.

So does Boomer Esiason. He pumped Dobbs on his No. 1 in the country sports talk show. He didn't pump him as a QB1 candidate though. He played, plus understands nuance. MVP of the league one year
Yeah, Boomer played, but Spurrier knows QBs being as he coached good ones.

With his breadth of experience and native intelligence, you would think he could whittle out a coaching career if he wanted. Or build rockets and jets….

I think he's in his wheelhouse. He's not only sharp, but informed too. Does a really good job of identifying the details of why someone is successful in the NFL, and the difficulty factor of actually doing it
