Doctors of VN

I'm going tomorrow. I find it funny that last week from Tuesday-Friday, I had a a fever, nausea, fatigue, then from Friday-today, I've had rashes and bumps pop up onto my skin. Now, I have both. Was just curious if anyone thinks the two coincide.

Hard to say. Certainly could be two different viruses or other infections, but good to get checked out. Hope you get some answers.

I get rashes on my cheeks when I get strep or upper respiratory infections, don't know why just do

Meningitis, or Hand Foot and Mouth disease?

I'd probably let the doctor figure it out instead of Google. :)

Anyone familiar with burn treatments?

I burned my finger probably two weeks ago. It was easily 2nd degree but smaller than a dime. It's been healing well but my question is with regard to covering it. I've been keeping a bandaid over it just to try and protect the new skin growing. When I take it off I can go 8 or so hours with no issues but eventually it starts to feel dry and begins uncomfortably itching. I put a tiny dot of lotion on it and cover it back up with another bandaid and this seems to alleviate it. Is this a common symptom with burns that are healing? Do they prefer to be moist/hydrated to a small degree? Should I be doing something different?

So the NOROVIRUS has hit my household, our 3yo brought it home last Friday and he was vomiting and diarrhea sat and Sunday, it hit me Tuesday night and I missed 2 nights of work, felling better now but momma started the vomiting at about 7 am today , our 5mo hasn't showed any signs and is doing very well, it's just hard to do anything this week.

When I spoke to our Dr both our physician and pediatrician they said there was nothing to do for it but stay hydrated and keep the fever under control (kind of hard for fever control while vomiting every time something touched our stomachs) they also said most sanitizers and disinfectants don't kill the virus and it's spread the fecal oral way.

I mean wth?

Did they offer Zofran or Phenergan? Acetaminophen is available in suppository form. Sanitizers with bleach will kill noro (and most other) viruses.

Spread through the vomit too. Clean something that's had vomit on it, don't wash your hands well, then poof you're infected.

Alcohol doesn't kill it?

There are different strains of the virus, some show alcohol resistance. It appears that Benzethonium chloride is a great antibacterial and will kill Norovirus. Though as a hand sanitizer by itself it's not nearly effective as it is when combined with ethyl alcohol. Only a handful of current hand sanitizers seem to contain both ingredients and be most effective against Norovirus: Clorox hand sanitizer spray, Zylast Antiseptic gel, GFS Bioprotect, Germstar Noro.

Unlike the cold or flu which are surrounded by a lipid shell and easily penetrated by alcohol based hand sanitizers the Norovirus is enveloped with a protein shell. Benzethonium chloride acts to break down that protein shell.

Flu has been coming in our hospital strong the last few weeks.

On another note, had a new one last night. Had someone with Cornelia de Lange Syndrome. That was a first, had never seen it in person before.

Dang, Coug. That's some high quality information right there. Appreciate it.

Well I guess I'm just a lil b**** .
Took me 4 days to get over this norovirus. My 3yo 2 days and my wife about 24hrs.

I bet I lost 15 pounds in 4 days

No problem. I actually enjoyed doing the research on that last night and learned a few things myself. You don't necessarily have to go and buy those products either, everything I read said good old fashioned hand washing practices can prevent you from catching Noro.

A true testament to how the same virus can affect people so differently.
We had it go around the house last year. It wasn't fun at all.

Was wondering this since I work nights 8pm to 4 am -- when i wake up in the afternoon my glucose level is almost always high today it was 170 -- I cant figure why its so high when i wake up and it is around 100 when i go to bed -- I do take metformin for it

Look up dawn phenomenon. Liver produces glucose quickly and it causes a spike because diabetics can't regulate the glucose that was released. That's the super short version of it.

Thats what I was thinking, but since my sleeping time is like 6am to 2pm would that matter ?

OK docs of Volnation.

While playing basketball with my 17yo son (I know, probably not the smartest thing to do for a 53 year old out of shape dad, but I've been trying to get in better shape and have been playing with him/friends for the last three weeks on occasion), I got a pain at the top of my calf, slightly below the back of my knee. At the time I thought it was a Charlie horse or cramp. I stretched it out a bit and played on but it still hurt. Two days later it still hurts. My guess is I've pulled a muscle. It hurts right where the tendon attaches to the calf muscle.

Should I rest it or keep trying to walk on it? Should I keep trying to stretch it out? Would I use ice or heat or both alternated. I'm using ibuprofen, is that the best?

Yeah, that's the spirit. Push through it tiger, you're still 20.

You should probably give it time to heal, especially if it's uncomfortable enough for you to be taking Ibuprofin for it.

I just went through this. Had a level 2 tear in the calf and no matter how much I rested or stretched, it wouldn't go away. I felt completely ridiculous having to rehab apulled muscle, but it was a crazy amount of pain and there clearly was no walking it off. I knew I was in trouble when I was wearing compression sleeves on my calves just to walk around the house.

PT told me to ice it for 15 minutes 2-3 times a day and take ibuprofen. Also, go buy heel pads to wear in your shoes. It will raise your heels and and shorten your calf muscle while you're standing. Really takes the heat off the muscle. Eventually, after the soreness still wouldn't go away, I got a prescription for Mobic and that's really done the trick.

Thanks. It is quite a bit better today. Hurt to walk yesterday. I thought about going to the club and sitting in the jacuzzi for a few minutes. I'll do the ice thing and continue the ibuprofen. How long was it before you could return to some forms of athletic activity?

It was a pretty significant year, so it took about 2 weeks of taking it pretty easy. Still have soreness a month later, but I've got full strength back.

What I was told about the heat/ice thing is to use ice initially and stay away from heat until the swelling was gone and the damage had a chance to heal.

Awesome, Thanks!

Mine is much better today. I don't think mine is as bad as yours. Maybe just a strain.

Any recommendations on a piediactric doc that also deals with autism in the Maryville/Knoxville area? My son has a piediatrician and he is ok but we need something a little more. He had been seeing a psychiatrist but to no real avail. Any suggestions would be great. Also he is 10 and been diagnosed severe
