Does anyone think that we will be back to being a top 5 team in the next few years?

I love your enthusiasm, but I just don't see it with our line issues. Top 10 is a possibility, but I need more proof in our lines to say we are top 5. Love the thought though:thumbsup:
If we would have continued our drive agaist UF and kicked a FG to win we would be on the verge of being a Top 5 team right now.

That is why I say top 10 is a possibilty, but even with that win we are not in the top 5. The verge yes, but not in.

IF, and I do mean if, we win out during regular season we will be in top 10. That would take winning out until we get to LSU as RealUT points out.

If and buts were candy and nuts it would be christmas all year long. It is possible though.

If we win out during the regular season, that SECCG could be a #2 vs. #4 matchup...You are right though, that is a huge if. Again, LSU is a very good team and this game is going to mean a lot to the Tigers after their humiliation last year.

Amen! We have the talent in spades...does it get developed...million dollar question...I don't see Urban Meyers beating us again for awhile...he doesn't rock our world like Spurrier...If Florida is that good...then we are only one point and one quarter away from the same level...The beauty of college football in the new millenium is that programs rise and fall at the drop of the hat...aka Miami....I think Tennessee can return to the Top Ten...possibly this year with a couple of fortunate bounces.....

Using this thought process, AF is only one point away from being at UT's level.

yes, we can be a top 5 program in the next few years. Problem is, so can 4-6 other SEC teams over the same time span. Problem no. 2 is we need to get some depth. we going to gain a lot of experience this year, but we need to back that up over the next two years or so with some recruiting that we're more used to seeeing...top 5 and 10 classes.

Our biggest problem right now is we don't have the flexibility to be able to rotate on the front 7 like we've had in the past (so they're not fresh the entire game, which i think is part of our late game collapses of late), and we are not very talented on O line nor are we deep.

And that would get us back to where we could compete at the top 5-10 level. that's where LSU, Auburn, UF, UGA are right now. US, BAma and USC and ARK are all trying to catch up right now. We have an advantage over the other three in that list imo, beause we aren't that far removed from any "glory" days, and it's obvious to see we are back on the rise...we just aren't "there".

so again, even if we do get back to that level, and i think we will, there will be 3-5 teams there waiting on us that are already there in our own conference. then it will get real interesting.

Bama is still transitioning on D from the great group that has left over the last two years. I can't believe how many times I've turned on a game on Sunday just to see a kid playing D that was at Alabama last year, or the year before.

Definitely not top 10, but I think the tide will still be floating around the top 25.
Leave it to the Monday Night game to prove my point. At safety for the Saints, Roman Harper.

As long as the UT coaching staff operates a 1960s style offense that pretty much every defensive coordinator can predict the Vols will not be a legitimate BCSNC contender, which is what you have to be to get in the Top 5.

Lucas Taylor does not seem to have a sense of urgency in catching the football as our other receivers. He looks like he is still playing in '05

Yeah, because Lord KNOWS that the offense hasn't managed to put points on the board this year!

Cal, Air Force, Florida, and Marshall. Not exactly the Steel Curtain, the '85 Bears, the '86 Giants, and the '00 Ravens.

Well other than GA and LSU, there are no real threats on our schedule !

I'm sure they'd be interested to know that in Tuscaloosa, Columbia, and Fayetteville. You should inform them that they have no shot against UT. It's not like two of those teams beat the Vols last year. Oh, wait. Yes it is.

Last year was just that ( Last Year ) !
That was a uncharacteristic UT football team, this year team is somewhat close to what we are use to seeing. If you're worried about South Carolina, Arkansas, or Alabama, then I suggest don't hold your breath, because we will not lose to any of those teams ! You heard it here first !

Last year was definitely a whole different situtation. I don't see USC, Bama, or Arkansas beating us, or even getting close to beating us. However, you must keep in mind that those teams are always dangerous. After seeing the Bama-Arkansas game, I would say we don't have to worry about Bama scoring any FGs on us. UGA doesn't seem as formidable as before after seeing them beat Colorado by one point in the last minute of the game. That is the same Colorado team that lost to 2-A Montana State 19-10 in the first week of the season. LSU is a very good team, and they'll be looking for blood after we embarrased them in front of the whole country last year. I don't see any reason why we can't win 10 or eleven games this season.

I hope you're right, but I'd bet that at least 2 of those 3 games are going to be dogfights.

i agree. ARK and BAMA will NOT be easy wins. You're kidding yourself if you think they will be.

I think we will roll over SC though.

Last year was last year but you have a good point, we dont really know how good our offense is until we get a true sample of SEC play. We are still working out issues on the line. Like my freind said-we are still tied for last in the SEC (this statement was made after the game and I was confused at to where we stand after a decent showing after a Fl loss).

With Fulmer as coach: No.
With Cut as coach: Yes.

5-10 record against top 10 teams at home since 2000. Our home field advantage has been eroded. Discipline problems (Banks, Washington, Lee Smith). Richt and (insert current Florida coach) own Fulmer. UF and UGA now recruit at least as good (and better last year) then us. Fulmer cant win the big game unless its on the road. And if we're playing in the Georgia Dome, its over.

The fact of the matter is Fulmer rode Manning's coattails. Manning put us back on the map, but once that talent left (the freshmen from Manning's last year in '97 were mostly gone by '01, our last great season, coincidence?) we've fallen back to a top 20 team. For a program that has so many advantages (huge stadium, tradition, playing in the mountains and by a freaking river, huge following) we should be better then this.

Whats Fulmer's record against Florida, and against Richt? Nuff said.

Coach Cut brings the drive and demands the respect that a head coach should bring. Im hoping one of the reasons he came back is because the AD said something to the effect of "one more bad season by Fulmer and the job is yours".
