Does it matter that Alabama was 5 and Vols 6?

Does it really matter? Alabama goes to the Sugar Bowl and likely plays Kansas State. We go to the Orange Bowl and play Clemson. I would rather play in the Orange Bowl against a big time opponent.
The problem is if TCU had lost big and #5 moved into the playoff. It could have happened and then “we” Tennessee fans would have been burning mattresses again, lol. (Hopefully not)

Probably matters a bit for a final ranking. Beat Clemson resoundlingly and we could end up at #4 maybe #3. If we were going in as #5, getting that #3 would be easier.

Lets face it, the Cocks screwed up our storybook year but if we could manage a final ranking of #3, that would be pretty amazing.

Yes it matters. It shows some college football blue bloods will always get the benefit of the day. The committee shouldn't even know what teams they are voting for it should be blind resumes they vote on.

Blind resumes? Really?

Ok, team A lost by 25 to an unranked team and by 14 to the #1 team, team B lost 2 games, both by 2 points on the last plays of the game. Who you ranking higher?

Considering what we had on the table, and all we had to do was show up. We have no right to gripe about what other teams get when we don't take care of our own business.

This is a dumb take. We would have no right to be mad if South Carolina jumped us as an 8-4 team because muh we lost? Obviously there has to be some sort of criteria and overall record and Head to head results are the top 2.

Yes. It sets a ridiculous precedent. Very easily could have been a decision between 4 and 5 and then we get left out because Bama is getting a lifetime achievement award after doing nothing this season.

Giving the committee leeway to decide that we might not be as good without a player is also preposterous as our one game without said player was total domination.

If we had been ranked above Alabama the last couple weeks, then posters would be complaining that we should be in the playoffs instead of Ohio State.

If we had a shot at playoff with 10-2 record, i would be upset. But I can't think of any logical reason why anyone would be mad with the Orange Bowl and missing the Sugar Bowl....

Sugar Bowl and Nola are a trash hole location.... Give me the Vols in Miami on New Years! There is zero advantage to have gotten the Sugar Bowl instead of the Orange Bowl besides people crying about being ranked behind Bama.
Or on December 30th

Perception. Bama's worst season in 15 years, UT's best season in 15 years and they STILL end up ranked higher

The only way any of this would have been fair, is if Georgia and Alabama actually had to play one another during the season..which would have dropped one of them down (I’m thinking Bama) substantially… which is why I am hoping for a more fair distribution with regard to the new teams being added… if I were AD (ha) I’d be on top of that (us not getting a crappy schedule)

It’s insulting. Ultimately we get the more intriguing bowl but still. It should have been a no brainer to be ranked ahead of Bama. Plain disrespectful and full of bias.

Pretty sure the sugar bowl knowing that bama likely is going to have a ton of opt outs and seeing how many vol fans went to baton rouge aren’t too happy about bama ahead of the vols

No it doesn't. Try to remember who was 5 & 6 in 2010, 2000, or even 2021. If you're not no. 1, the rest is just interesting speculation.

The only issue is that it sets a bad precedent for the future. But for this bowl season, it doesn't matter.

I honestly would rather play Clemson in the Orange bowl. Will be a big lot of media coverage on this one. Between both teams' main colors being orange while playing in the Orange bowl, to Tennessee playing for some revenge against Dabo and his comments, to each team team starting 2 "new" QBs. Lots of media talking points for this game.
