Does Obama stand a chance againts McCain?

Before the nomination race began, I remember someone posting, "..no way this country elects a black man named Obama." And indeed it is amazing the support that has surfaced for him during this race. I really like Obama, but I also believe the unmitigated disaster that has been the Bush/Cheney administration, has by and large increased this country's willingness to elect someone who 8 years ago may have stood much less a chance.

Well, if Jeremiah Wright is the biggest skeleton in Obama's closet, I think he should perform fine in November.

That story will be back come election time. So will Ayers. Don't know if that will hurt him further but it won't go away.

Obama's rise is really not that big an anomoly. It happens all the time. Could you have predicted in the mid 1980s that Bill Clinton would be President (especially after that death march of a nomination speech he gave at the '88 convention)? George Bush wasn't even in politics in 2002 and was running the Texas Rangers.

Obama needs to send this woman a thank-you card:

Regardless what you think of the man, I'm surprised so many on here doubt that he has a chance to win. Under different circumstances and against a different candidate (like McCain in 2000, e.g.), maybe not. But Obama certainly has a chance, and I'd say a very good chance to become the next POTUS.

Most polls show him beating McCain - he definitely has a legit shot.

I agree, but it will be hard on him because of the Clinton factor......

Heads up he will beat McCain because McCain is a piece of trash.

It will all come down to whether or not the democratic voters will unite......

I think Obama has a good shot at winning right now but November is a long way off. The general election is 6 months away and look what McCain was able to do in 6 months, he went from no chance to nominee.

Same could be said of Obama.

It will be the first time in awhile a "Bush" or "Clinton" hasn't been on the ticket - that alone will make it somewhat interesting, at least.

If I had a dime every time you called McCain a piece of trash, I could go see "Iron Man" tonight...with a date.

I agree, I don't see Hillary on the ticket but the VP selection will be crucial for both parties. I could see Bill Richardson or Jim Webb running with Obama.

Here's what the electoral map looks like now, McCain leads 290 to 237 in electoral votes.

I think the real question is: does McCain stand a chance against Obama?

(considering the vastly unpopular Rep. administration that's been in power for the better part of the decade)

once a majority of the electorate realizes that their taxes will more than double and the quality of their healthcare will resemble Mozambique's, McCain will be a shoo in.

I know everyone keeps harping on how unpopular Bush is, but he's been president for 8 years... somebody must have liked him, at least more than Gore and Kerry. McCain will be trying to appeal to the moderates... I honestly believe he thinks he can win without the conservative vote. So Bush won't be as much as a factor as some might think. Bush doesn't mean a Dem victory in November.
