Does Pearl mirror Fulmer as far as coaching goes?

What the heck ... the basketball team is struggling, obviously. But we suffered through 10 years of crap with Fulmer. Yes, he sprinkled in some good years, but on the whole, he underachieved greatly.

Pearl is a very good motivator and incredibly driven. We'll be fine. This team is underachieving. That's true. But, no one in their right mind should've thought that this team would come close to last year's team. Just remember Buzz Petersen and be thankful for Bruce. And, as someone else said, who doesn't need talent? Phil Jackson is considered one of the best basketball coaches of all-time, and he's had Jordan, Kobe, Pippen, and Shaq. That helps.

I for one am tired of the half a$$ teams putting on the field and on the court. We are paying him really good to win. We set a standard with firing Fulmer now its Bruce's turn he better turn this around fast. Fire Bruce.

Some of you have ridiculous demands for your coaches. We are lucky to have Pearl. Other than this year, one of his hallmarks has been getting the most he can get out of his team and getting their complete effort every time out there. I have no doubt he is doing as good of a job as any coach out there would given the hand he has been dealt. Some of your expectations are downright ridiculous. We were told prior to this season that this squad wouldn't be up to the level of some of Pearl's previous. Why the surprised looks and damnation suddenly? Just enjoy the process, these players will improve. Sometimes you have a player that is physically and emotionally ready to play at this level very early in their career but far more often you don't. That is what is killing this squad. We have too much inconsistency at key positions and a lot of that can't be coached. When part of the cog is broken, then the whole system suffers. We have good players, yes, but a good team is about more than having a few good players. It's about having guys that do the right thing more than the wrong one at every position and we just don't have that yet.

I have a feeling that many of you are going to be just as down on Kiffin when the football team struggles, and mark my words, it will. We will lose games that everyone thought we would win and probably win some that we should have lost on paper, but the negative is all that some of you guys see. Instead of enjoying the wins and the positives, you build them into unrealistic expectations and set yourself up for a huge let down. Patience goes a long way and realistic expectations are vital.

What did you think of Hopson's first shot last night?

Was that the 3 he hit where he started grinning and shaking his head like he was the freaking man or something?

If so or not, that kind of bothered me. He didn't go overboard or anything, but he hasn't done anything all year and all of a sudden after one shot he is acting like he is "the man."

At least we don't have to worry about him being one and done after this year like was being talked about before he stepped on campus.

I am preparing myself for another loss this week to Vandy in Nashville.

It has never existed. The press simply covered it up by generating turnovers. We've been absolutely awful in the half court ever since he arrived.

I assumed he meant the full court defense. I will agree that once the team got in half court offense, the UT defense has always been nonexistent under Pearl.

Last night would have been a perfect chance to put Steven Pearl in the game, and give him one mission. Run through the screen and absolutely level Meeks. Don't hurt him...but do something to break his rhythm up. Instead the players acted like they didn't mind given up a career high to a guy in their own house.

Now...part of it is coaching. At some point though, the players have to man up and play.

And I agree that the Bradshaw heart factor gets overplayed...but I bet a month's salary that Meeks doesn't throw up 50 with Dane on the floor.

I love Pearl but how exactly are we "rebuilding" we return chism, tyler, prince, brian williams played big minutes last year. No we're not returning all 5 starters but most teams in college ball don't either. In today's game that's a lot of experience we had coming back.

I might come back and actually post something related to this thread when the Vols have a won-loss record like the Wade Houston or Kevin ONeill era teams.

Maybe Bruce should just "man up" and resign. That would save us all another Phill won't leave situation.

KO's teams played harder than anyone in a UT uniform did last night

The "team is young" is not a good excuse. UF won the national title with 4 sophomores in the starting lineup.

That's true. I don't know what the answer is because I refuse to believe that Pearl isn't teaching them. It's just not translating on the court. Some of it is ability and some of it is inexperience. I'm hoping it's more inexperience than ability because that will change for sure.

I think alot of the problem is discipline...I was watching our team warm up last night at TBA, and
watching Ky....Ky team seemed focused, our players looked like they were getting ready to play street ball, Tyler was dancing around and kept working his
way back to Ky side of court, couldn't tell if he was
smack talking but it looked like he was diffently doing a little talking. Another thing I noticed was in the 2nd half, when the ball got stuck in the rim on Ky's end of the court, the ref (that we none liked) asked Tyler to get the ball down and Tyler pointed to the goal as if the tell the ref to get it himself. Then he proceeded to push the ball out and dunk it. If I would have been coaching, regardless the horrible calls from that ref, I would have taken him out and let him set the remainder of the game. As u can tell I am not a Tyler Smith fan, granted he is a good player, but on the court he comes off as a thug.

By the way....I do support Coach Pearl...I think he is the coach for us...I just think we have a few players that think they need no coaching...

5 of UT's opponents this year had scorers who achieved their high game of the year against us. Jodie Meeks was on fire, but he also broke a 40 yr old UK points record UT's defense is terrible, they dont seem to game plan specific opponents or key on an opponents key players. UK has Meeks and Patterson, thats it. Keep the ball out of their hands, double team them when they do get it. We did none of that and continued to do none of that as game went on. Pearl needs to get his **** and his team together, bar none.

Geez......where do I start. Look, it's not just that the team is young, you've got guys that have not played together before, it's the beginning of SEC play, and the Vols have a target on their chest. That's never happened before. In years past, people have overlooked us...now, we are the hunted and we have to get our kids to gel. Finding the right chemistry will go a long way as will just playing games together. I look for us to become much better as the season goes on....hopefully peaking just in time for the tournament. Kentucky fans were screaming at the beginning of their season too...now they're cheering. Keep your pants on....we're gonna be fine.

If I recall right we cut it back to 7 last night before they hit us for a run. Was it a great coaching job by Pearl yesterday, no, but to call for his head is flat out stupid at this point.

we have many refusing to believe that the coaching / teaching is part of the issue. It's clearly a part of the issue, but I don't think it's the teaching. I think it's the lack of demanding.

you are correct bvp but do not leave out the quality of hot dogs being recruited.these guys are all selfish and it shows as they cannot or will not play together.the thought of being a team is beyond them.if you continue to recruit these type of players this will be the result for years to come.

try recruiting a few solid 3 point shooters and some blue collar shut down defenders to add to the hot dogs and you might eventually have something.
