Does Rocky Top hurt Tennessee football?

Following are the lyrics to the #1 fight song in the land.
Perhaps you could enlighten us by pointing out where exactly are the racist overtones??!!

Wish that I was on ol' Rocky Top
Down in the Tennessee hills
Ain't no smoggy smoke on Rocky Top
Ain't no telephone bills

Once I had a girl on Rocky Top
Half bear, other half cat
Wild as a mink, but sweet as soda pop
I still dream about that

Rocky Top, you'll always be
Home sweet home to me
Good ol' Rocky Top
Rocky Top, Tennessee
Rocky Top, Tennessee

Once two strangers climbed ol' Rocky Top
Lookin' for a moonshine still
Strangers ain't come down from Rocky Top
Reckon they never will

Corn won't grow at all on Rocky Top
Dirt's too rocky by far
That's why all the folks on Rocky Top
Get their corn from a jar

Rocky Top, you'll always be
Home sweet home to me
Good ol' Rocky Top
Rocky Top, Tennessee
Rocky Top, Tennessee

I've had years of cramped-up city life
Trapped like a duck in a pen
All I know is it's a pity life
Can't be simple again

Rocky Top, you'll always be
Home sweet home to me
Good ol' Rocky Top
Rocky Top, Tennessee

Wow, that's some controversial stuff right there. Maybe Congress should look into that as well while they're wasting taxpayer money figuring out how they can "fix" CFB.

What a stupid ass idea for a thread.

Thanks for posting. Amazingly despite being a fan for half a century, I had never read the last verse. Now the unusual name of one of our frequent posters makes perfect sense!

Rocky Top is a bluegrass song.
Good point - it is part of Appalachian culture. Interestingly, in some contexts, “people of Appalachian descent” are considered to be underrepresented or disadvantaged. Personally, I think we are blessed but understand the argument.

Does the minority athlete hold the country song we are so aligned with against us ? Does the song hold or give racist overtones?
Kidding, right? Do they hold Bama's racist history against them? Wasn't UT one of the first SEC schools to have a black QB?

BTW, the most "racist" thing in this particular thread is the insinuation that a culturally "hillbilly" song which has NOTHING to do with race whatsoever... is racist just because most hillbillies are white.

I just can't remember the exact history. I started to say "THE" first but wasn't sure of my memory.

Interesting sidenote... well interesting to me... I played HS football against Jimmy Streater's youngest brother Eric. My HS coach and Jimmy had a great relationship. He spoke to us once before a game. That family suffered too much tragedy.

There's only one person this song can offend - Sylvester Stallone.

And that's if he were gay and liked to take it like a champ instead of giving it like a champ...
