Dogs of VolNation and other pets that are inferior to Dogs

Need some advice on getting a new family member. Wife and I are going to adopt a new dog to add to our family and are thinking about a Great Pyrenees. We currently have 2 miniature dachshunds and 3 cats. We have been looking for a golden retriever, but have been on the golden retriever rescue group waiting list for almost two years. The pandemic pet rush hit shortly after we started looking and golden retrievers are insanely popular now. We have had mastiffs and Great Danes in the past, so we are wanting another large friendly breed. I have read up on the Great Pyrenees and they seem like they would be a good fit for our family. I was hoping to get someone’s real world experience with the breed. TIA.

Where do you live? -> summer temperatures

So this won’t be the happiest of posts, but I’m hoping maybe some has experience or advice. My baby Brutus is not quite 1 and half. We learned today that he has some issues with both of his elbows that for whatever reason they didn’t develop properly. Not unheard of in short legged dogs, but it is the first for one I’ve had. Anyway, they want us to go to a specialist in Nashville, it’s going to be 3k just for testing, almost certainly will need procedures done surgically so probably 10k at least. Vet told us to start him on joint supplements and fish oil right now, but they if we don’t do something surgically that it will almost certainly progress and he could experience breaks or even total loss of use in both elbows. I truly don’t know what to do, I could swing the testing, it would hurt but I can afford it. Idk how I will afford surgery, anyone here dealt with this? What did you do and what was successful if anything?

I would say pet insurance, but I doubt you would be approved due to pre-existing condition.

That's a tough one friend. I feel for you.

All I can say is if it was my Abigail, I would do everything I could financially and physically. The same for her that I would any human member of my family.

Heartbreaking for sure. I can’t offer advice on the condition, but will offer some ideas to make the testing and surgery affordable. I would check with the specialist and see if they offer any kind of payment plan or possibly a low interest loan. You can start a go fund me for him or other avenue for donations, I have seen people donate a lot of money for a lot lesser cause. Check with your local dog rescue groups, some will help with surgery cost for pet owners, they may also be able to help with vet referrals. I hope everything works out for you and him.

That's a tough situation. I'd probably start with the humane society resources. Past that maybe look for pet insurance and see what their policy is on preexisting conditions. Maybe start a gofundme.

Are you having trouble affording your pet?

East Tennessee. She will be an inside dog and in air conditioning for the most part.
This isn’t much, as I’ve never had one, but there are several in the neighborhood that I see being walked. (Or more accurately, they are walking their humans.) Very good-natured dogs, although one gets clipped in the summers.

I sure hope you get him the help he needs.

We had a Great Pyrenees and Lab mix until last month. Great family dog and smart as heck. We got him when he was a pup and he took to training so easily. As a pup, I trained him to grab the leash off the front door knob when he needed to go out in no time at all. He was very easy to keep in the yard until we first moved and the bunny rabbits thought his yard was their yard. Protective of the family but also gentle giant. One thing I will warn about is dog proofing house. When we moved down to Florida, I returned from a job interview with him laying down next to the mailbox in the front yard. He had opened the back sliding glass door and "created" a doggie door through the screen portion of our back porch. He didn't have any difficulties with heat and loved to swim. One thing that he would not take to no matter what was crating, he ate through 2 hard plastic shelled ones, bent a heavy duty Kong crate and escaped one Sunday in about 2 hours. Sorry if I went a little long, I just miss my buddy. Oh, get dog insurance prior to having an ACL tear in their knees!!! He tore ACL in one at age 6 and we didn't have insurance 5K and that was 8 years ago. 1.5 years later 2nd ACL cost me 250 deductible. Just compare the different companies and coverages. Anyway, long story short in my opinion you get out what you put into a dog.

ETA: if he has double dewclaws make sure you keep them trimmed because they can get away fast.
