We lost too because FAU was too quick for our guards. ZZ would have really helped in that respect.

Our Sweet 16 game was the 5th game without ZZ and we had our team established.... We didn't lose the second half vs FAU because of quick guards from the perimeter.... We gave up rebounds to FAU and gave up second chance 3's on kick outs... our big men getting out rebounded by guards spurred FAU's comeback.... It is what caused their big lead vs SDSU until they took over the glass and limited FAU to 1 shot possessions. This isn't rocket science... We were almost a month in since ZZ's injury.... To sit here and act like his absence all of the sudden caused an issue in our 5th or 6th game without him in the second weekend of the NCAAT is absurd. We got out rebounded by a smaller team and lost.... This is what happened.

ZZ being out caused issues against all of the smaller teams we played though. Explain Auburn and how ZZ being out had no effect on our ability to stay in front of Green. FAU wasn’t the first time short guys ran around us for everything, whether it was rebounds or drives. Additionally, having ZZ would have allowed us to play bigs less

Are you saying that having ZZ would have kept our two 7 footers and Olivier from getting out rebounded constantly in the second half? It doesn't matter if ZZ allowed us to have a more even lineup vs smaller teams, we had length over FAU and we got out rebounded on the glass that allowed them grab tons of offensive rebounds in the second half and take the lead.... Having ZZ out there wasn't going to solve our bigs getting out rebounded by a bunch of smaller guards.... Aidoo, Uros, and Olivier were simply lazy on the glass.... That is exactly what happened. Not sure if you watched the game at all. This isn't controversial or rocket science..... We lost rebounding battle in second half and that led to us losing the game. Literally what happened last night vs SDSU until they took over the glass.

We got tired against fau
At that point in the season, everyone is tired and dealing with boo boos. Some manage it better than others. Having said that, I'm glad for the kids. They're getting the rest they deserved. Really feel sorry for those tired and beat up teams going through the misery of a final 4. Absolutely cruel to make SDSU and UConn have to play another game Monday night.

How many games he was out has nothing to do with missing his quickness against a quick team. There were several reasons we lost, including getting outrebounded, missing many easy and / or open shots, getting outquicked, and some missed calls.

Tennessee doesn't give up 10+ offensive rebounds and we win that game..... Has nothing to do with ZZ being in or out....

Did you notice that we got our share of rebounds near the basket but FAU got most of the many long rebounds? That's speed, which FAU had more of than us.
edit - ZZ would also have given us two players fast enough to drive to the basket against FAU, along with Mashack. That would have made a real difference.

If faster guys are getting rebounds around our big men, would it not help our rebounding to play our “lazy” big men less and play the fastest guy who never has effort problems and rebounds well for his position? I did watch the game and a lot of the offensive rebounds were long ones off of 3PT misses which is where guard rebounding is most important

I made a simple observation. No value judgement attached. I think it sucks that we were winded in the second half against them. Especially since we didn't play our full rotation. But that's definitely what happened.

And having said that, I don’t think ZZ being out was the only reason we lost or something. I agree with you that the rebounding effort could have been greater. I just think him being out was a decent sized reason of why we struggled with a quick team.

Yep. Rebounding is mostly effort and "want to". Sometimes we had guys pull a no show for a half or a game or two. Hopefully those replacing them will provide more consistency.

Point well taken. Still, is the Barnes system that much more demanding than other coaches? Are they just better at strength and conditioning? Are they better at managing minutes and using their bench? Why is it so tiring playing for Barnes and at UT? With the pace FAU plays, how are they not worn out? Hate to say it, but I can't be alone in thinking it.

Maybe some on our roster aren't tough enough to battle through the bumps, bruises and fatigue as well as others? They call it the heart of a champion. Maybe we don't have enough of those types on our roster? Dunno, but there's just something about playing for Barnes that drains a team over the course of a season. Not bashing the guy but there's just something off about it.

FAU is excellent and worthy of the position they are in. Still can’t believe we had them down and folded like a cheap suit. Too many experienced players faded down the stretch.

The refs completely shifted the momentum starting with the phantom calls on Aidoo and the flopping of Goldin.

The refs literally took us out of the game and gave all the momentum to FAU on that huge run. The tech on UROS was absolute insanity when I see Tshibwe play like that on every possession….

That’s why ORN got the gittttt
Guess another old saying applies. Many have an excuse. Few have the want to. Still the sweet 16 is a very nice season for this roster. They can consider it an accomplishment and be proud.

ZZ playing changes the whole complexion of the game offensively and defensively. They have to defend totally differently and attack on offense completely different Their whole gameplan changes. They can crash the boards offensive easier if they are faster than the other team.
