Don Devoe speaks out about Pearl

"it has certainly marred the image of Tennessee men’s basketball."

And here I was thinking all his successors until Pearl did a pretty good job of marring the image of UT men's basketball. Apparently ol Don forgets Wade, Kevin, Jerry, and Buzz tanked the program.

Bruce is about to do the same.

That has nothing to do with what he says, and you know that.

Not slamming Devoe but did he ever knowingly bend or break a rule to gain an advantage in recruiting? I did not keep up with b-ball during his tenure.

Two different ways of "marring the image of UT men's basketball". I personally think Pearl's problems is worse. I am not a Pearl basher by any means, but this cannot be erased. Winning can make people forget losing, but blatantly cheating is a different story.

I have a hard time believing he did based on the places he coached. Of course I was too young to really pay attention to his whole career

Did Devoe bring in Bernard King? If so, are we suppose to believe we landed him cleanly? That was one of the biggest recruiting coups of that decade if I am not mistaken. This is just purely speculation of course, can someone with more knowledge of that era enlighten this board?

How did Green tank the program with 4 straight NCAAT appearances?

Lying got Bruce busted. Not cheating. Very different.

I'd rather have a coach that lies and wins than one that's a saint and a loser.

What he's saying may be true, but it doesn't need to be said. He shouldn't be throwing stones at Pearl after Bruce welcomed him back to the university.

why doesn't it need to be said? And if Devoe had to be "welcomed back" then that kinda reflects on badly on UT doesn't it?

I wasn't born until 89. He was pretty successful here. People like Bob Knight respect him, so I doubt he did much cheating.

Yeah, until he gets caught lying and looks like he's about to get serious sanctions.
