I really hope the lawsuit falls through and cuse and Pitt stay in big east and adding Memphis. That would get ugly.

No-brainer from the Memphis perspective.

Though Pastner didn't like it, the game was important because Memphis frankly lacked big games on their schedule, not just for RPI (though not this year, obviously) but rivalry games, TV exposure, etc.

That's not a problem anymore. The Big East is still going to be a top three basketball league year in and year out, and Memphis picks up old rivals Louisville and Cincy again. Whereas there was a little upside for Memphis to playing Tennessee, now there's zero. While the recruiting component is probably overblown, no need to even put it in play.

Maybe the SEC-Big East challenge will pair up Memphis and UT now and then.

Memphis is about to be the new St Johns... :) or Depaul, or Seton Hall... They'll dance once every 3-5 years

This might hurt UT slightly in Memphis recruiting, but I think Coach Martin's background & personality will more than make up for it. Stokes succeeding at UT will also be a bigger deal.

I have never understood why playing UT was such a bad idea for Memphis. Sure a game will not be played in Memphis but it is not like a prospect can't find UT playing on TV. As much as Memphis tries, they will never be able to get the "TN" removed from their address. If nothing else, not playing UT could actually help in that kids might be more intrigued with UT since they won't see them yearly in their backyard.

Coach cal recruited Atlanta area pretty well and the Tennessee games made that possible with Knoxville being right down I75
i don't think he can recruit Memphis well enough to succeed in big east... Ole miss and miss state are almost as strong as Mermfus state.... Btw, coach cal is still strong in Memphis recruiting circles

It is true. End series after next year when contract expires. The desire to end the series started with Cal.

Only reason it didn't end was UT insisted on the basketball series to continue the football series. We'll never play them in football in Memphis again.

LOL at the poster on the OP's link who referred to Tennessee as Memphis' little brother. That guy is either being sarcastic or completely removed from reality.

I was under the impression that the only reason we ever started playing Memphis State (no that's no a typo - that's who they really are) was because it was mandated by the Tennessee State Legislature.

No big deal. Can play other teams that will be better attended and higher profile. Vols just used this as a tune up and certain W.
