Don't Like to Blame Games on Refs....

We just let florida shoot over 80% in the 2nd half. You cant blame refs when we cant defend at all.

The refs were part of the reason we couldn't defend. Because normal defense was a foul.

Like the OP, not saying we would've won, but it might've been watchable.

In the first half there were 11 fouls called. In the 2nd half there were 33 counting the technical. Win or lose that is a ridiculous swing.

the refs definitely had an impact on the game. in the first half they let A LOT of hacking slide. those are generally the kind of games where Florida struggles. in the second half they decided to call a tight game which is generally the kind of game that Florida is toughest to beat.

Well that % is skewed greatly because of all the fouls called; less shots on goal due to fouls before the shot and shot attempts were foul is called doesn't count as a missed shot. 17 FG attempts for a half could tell you that. They shot the ball well no doubt, but 31 FT's when were are not tackling them or putting them in the front row is ridiculous. Make that 33 FTs.

therein lies the problem. consistency! just call the game the same. hopefully every game, but at least half to half. UT would have lost, but being ticked at your team and the refs just adds to the frustration.

This is about right. And the extremely tightly called games are the ones where Tennessee is easiest to beat. But this took tightly called to a new level during that one stretch where y'all got foul calls on five (or was it more?) consecutive possessions. I think two of them were actually fouls.

Tennessee is going to lose every time the refs call tick tack nonsense.

As I said in the game thread, the refs call so much ticky tack nonsense on us because we have a reputation for it. Every coach we play talks about how aggressively we handcheck, how physically we play, etc etc. They nag the refs about it. Eventually that's the way the refs just start looking for it when we play.

The bigger question: why the hell can't our guys back off any when they see how tightly it's being called on them? Why are we still stupidly handchecking guys 30 feet from the basket when we're in the double bonus and we know that the refs are calling absolutely everything on us?

They were only in the act of shooting on a couple of occasions. So make it 14/20. That is still 70%! They werent even letting them play long enough to get off a shot most of the time.

Where were those calls in the first half? Why did the refs drastically change styles at halftime?

Blame the ref's all you want but the ref's are far from the biggest problem the team has pulling out a victory.

Because they were 14/17 from the field!

Refs need to get on higher ground and call what they see, not what some asshat tells them to look for. Even and same calls both ways would be nice. If you can't do that, turn in your zebra shirts and blow toy.

have you read this thread...hardly anyone in here is blaming the loss on the refs. just stating the obvious, they were inconsistent half to half and ruined the game.

Because two-time national champion and current SEC regular season champion Billy Donovan goes up to them at halftime and says, "What the hell is this garbage you're letting them get away with? The only reason they're back in this game is because you guys let them hack their way back into it. Come on guys, get your heads out of your asses." And then the refs start looking for it, and then they start seeing it.

The fact that everybody in the conference thinks Pearl is a buffoon can't help.

Truly a shame the NCAA can't get good officials that can see it both ways. Poor NCAA. But, they are what they are. A big pile of steaming _____.

Sometimes a team gets wide open looks when the other team is gun shy about fouls due to officiating. Don't know if it fit the case tonight. Beat a dog often enough and all you have to do is raise your hand and he shys away. Again, just throwing ideas out there.

Then why do they even play the games? Just have the refs vote in the offseason on which coach is the most respected and then have the other teams buy lottery tickets to see who can get a fair shake, if anyone.

Of course coaches like Krzyzewski will have some influence. I guess Billy Donovan gets to keep his even though he's been building an impressive NIT streak before this season. But if your job as a ref is to call a game fairly, how do you let a coach influence you to the point that you ignore contact on one end and whistle it on the other?

Maybe I'm being unfair by placing expectations of fairness and competency on the refs. Maybe they never asked for those standards, and God knows they've done nothing to promote them. It's also possible that I just don't have the mindset necessary to truly understand officiating and its role in sports: small, vindictive, self-important, etc.

Weak, wrong and uncalled for. Guys on here continue to take losses like they've never played before and take potshots. You always talk about your age and maturity. Try acting like it. Donovan is the coach of the year and thinks highly of BP.

I don't think it necessarily has to be that. I think that refs just call what they expect to see. I drew a parallel in the game thread to the Maddux/Glavine strike zone, which as a Braves fan I got awfully comfortable expecting to see and which other team's fans never ever quit complaining about. I don't think any of the umpires ever gave them that strike zone on purpose, exactly; they just expected to see strikes and they called them that way. You see the converse all the time, too; a pitcher who walks a ton of guys rarely gets the borderline call on the corner. The ump doesn't expect it to be a strike, so it isn't.

Our teams have had a reputation for fouling a lot. If somebody like Billy Donovan goes up and yells at the refs about it to get the refs conscious of it, they're going to find a lot of fouls to call.

Donovan is by all accounts a hell of a nice guy and probably thinks highly of everybody.

I didn't even mean that as a shot at Pearl; I meant it merely as a statement of fact. It's been reported for years that Pearl is pretty much detested by his peers. I've read accounts by Actual Mainstream Journalists talking about how Tennessee is always ranked lower in the coaches' poll because nobody likes Pearl, speculating that his players don't do as well in all-SEC voting, etc. I thought it was common knowledge that Pearl is extremely unpopular in his profession.

You need to reference proof to that assertion. Actual Mainstream Journalists?
