He is a Tennessee Legend, and he should be remembered as such. It might not be the most pleasant way to be remembered, but there you go. He got $11M out of the deal, and some high quality OJT. "Letting it go" is disrespectful to his time here.

Merge if necessary, Mods, but there is no getting around it: Derek Dooley is a Tennessee Legend.

It's for all the wrong reasons, but the man got his big time coaching experience OJT on our dime to the tune of $11M USD. He compared us to the Nazi army; he said the team couldn't wash without him; he said the players never executed what he had in his head.

Some want to "move on", but get real. He is part of Tennessee's folklore now.

For the next generation, whenever the Vols screw-up (and they will), people should and will say, "Did Dooley call that?... Did someone let Dooley back in Neyland??"

He is the worst coach in our history. We let Mike "Hambone" Hamilton fire Phil Fulmer before the end of the season (and I say again, Phil would have been 7 - 6 at the end of 2008, with quality continuity for Crompdaddy without Hambone), and choose the successor to our HoF coach who brought us the Decade of Dominance, and who had rekindled his fire in 2008 as his Top 5 recruiting class demonstrated, complete with a better college QB than Tyler Bray, which is saying a lot.

Dooley's a big boy. And Vol fans have the right to slam and rag on him until folks from Memphis to Bristol forget how KY beat us with a WR at QB or how Vandy absolutely humiliated us.

Classless but expected.

He also served as a stopgap when no one else would touch us. Well paid yes, disappointing yes, but did the job as best that he could when our options were gone.

Other more competent coaches wanted this gig, such as Sumlin who is doing pretty well. Hammy tried to pull out another Pearl and failed, so don't give me the " no body wanted the job" bs.

I don't feel too bad for someone taking $11,000,000 for four SEC wins against Vandy (twice), Kentucky, and Mississippi. Almost $3,000,000 per SEC win! Why does anyone feel sorry for this guy?!? He didn't even show up to coach the last game!!!

It's "classless" and "stupid" for a fan base to poke fun at the worst coach in their history? Is it just too soon? For most, it was 11-games too late.

I've been called a Nazi in a similar thread. That's the very definition of classless and stupid. So, not sure if I trust either of your opinions on what is classless and stupid. Nothing of merit yet to suggest I should.

Was he? He wasn't a damn fool like Kiffin, but all reports indicate he was a really unlikeable person behind the scenes.

Personally, I do not fawn over his public persona as many do. He wasn't a fool and numbnutz like Kiffin, but I don't think he respected the team as many believe. I think he did respect the traditions and history though. That's a plus.

Rumors out of AL is that Saban is hiring this appaerently crappy coach. He must be awfully stupid if he is going to hire this guy. Man can't believe dooley fell off so low after getting fired and having to take a position on sabans staff. If it is true Bama must be going down.
