Doron Lamb will be a better college player than Chris Lofton

I must have misread, my apologies. I for sure was skimming but what i picked up was MM saying that as an overall player, Lamb would be better. If you consider that the ability to shoot is just a tiny percentage of what makes up being a basketball player and if Doron has the "check-marks" in his column in all other tangible categories, then it is quite easy to make the argument in favor of Doron.

They are called shooting guards for a reason. It is erroneous to say that shooting and scoring is a tiny percentage. When you're shooting at the level that Lofton was, it makes a big difference when determining who is the better overall player.

Another quality suggestion from mm. Glad to be able to use my new signoff, though.

He may have been better in more areas of the game, but I don't think the team would have skidded so badly during that stretch in 2007 when Lofton sprained his ankle had it instead been Smith's ankle.

I disagree, but it's a fair argument.

Although he is much appreciated by Vol Fans, I don't believe many realize exactly how important JuJuan Smith was to the success and rise of Tennessee Basketball.

Without JuJuan on the team, Lofton doesn't get as many open looks. Teams had to respect Smith's range almost as much as Lofton's. Lofton gets doubled more without Smith on the team

If UK would have had Lofton instead of, say, Bledsoe last season, they would have won the national title. That WVU game is a completely different story with Lofton in the lineup. Having his shooting at the 2-guard position, along with Wall and the other pieces, would have made UK unstoppable. Sure, Lofton wouldn't necessarily have been "the man." Lofton would have had a lower scoring average than his UT career. But, to say he would have been a "roleplayer at best" is wrong. That's beyond homerism; that's just plain wrong.

Not calling out Bledsoe here - I'm just naming him, because that's the position in the lineup that Lofton would have taken. And, I don't care about how high Bledsoe and a couple of other guys were taken in the Draft based largely on the overall hype of their team.

This is all a fair argument, I have no issue with any of it. You're mention of substituting lofton for Bledsoe is an interesting one. It might have been much of the same if Jodie Meeks had stayed, filling that shooter position. God knows it couldn't have been any worse than 1-89 performance during the WV game.

Very few players were as proficient from outside as Lofton. He was the most valuable player on the team both his junior and senior years. I would not turn him down for anyone at the 2 guard position.

Meeks could have made the difference in an Elite 8 and final four for KY. Likely a national championship had he stayed in school.

I am not discounting JaJuan's importance. I'm just saying that if we're only going to have one of them out there, Lofton would draw the most attention to free up other guys. When I think about the 3 games we lost without him (@UK, @Miss, @UF), the record might have ended up the same had Lofton been there instead of Smith. We'll never know. He might have at least made the difference at Ole Miss.

I brought this up when Smith was called the better all-around player. My response was that Lofton was the more dangerous and thus more valuable player.

Any one who disagrees with you doesn't know much about basketball. Smith may have been more athletic than Lofton, but no question who the best player was. Lofton was a perfect example of an excellent basketball player who was not overly athletic.
