Doug Matthews On Tennessee Vols 2015 Recruiting Class

Maybe he meant "his" recruiting information. We all have our opinions. :)

Haha, guess so Lebs. These guys that wanna refute a guy who has connections to the staff and athletic department kill me. Nobody's saying he's "my insider" like some posters have said....he's a public personality on the radio for cryin out loud.

I'm not saying Doug is the be all, end all when it comes to UT football info, but he has access to info that no one on here has with the exception of a couple of guys (like Vol74 w/Jalen Hurd) which he shares weekly....and he happens to be spot on an overwhelming majority of the time.

Which is a great percentage considering "he doesn't even follow recruiting" and just recently got a flip phone.

Actually it was very correct. You just want to deflect because someone feels differently than you. Oh and this is an Internet forum so things should be lose and fun. Sorry that you cannot have fun in here. I guess it sucks to be you.

I'm gonna call someone out when they obviously don't have a clue what they're talking about. I'm actually all for different opinions when those opinions are educated. The recruiting forum was lose and fun before people like you started posting. V,B

Lol @ this thread... VN wants an insider so bad, that they'll jump on the first persons opinion that fits their agenda.. Been going on for a long time, and always goes bad.

Breaking news- UT coaches are the only ones that know anything, and they're not telling anyone.

I would imagine a former UT coach who still has ties to the program would have more information about the current class of recruits than any of us would. If that classifies him as an insider so be it. Believe it or not some people do have connections to the program or even an individual player if they live or work in the area that player is being recruited. Franklinvol from the TOS was all over Derek Barnett before anyone here thought we had a shot of getting him. Uzzi and Corner are former Vols that post on TOS. Galilee has been fairly accurate about players from the Memphis area, and has gave all kinds of inside looks as to what's really going on with Drew Richmond's recruitment. Mz Terry is a current Vols mom who has inside information about any kid coming out of Norcross in GA. I could go on and on. Not everyone on here is a fake or a fraud that is as much in the dark as you or I.

And with that being said, I used to frequent a bar as recent as 2 years ago in West Knoxville that had a bunch of former players and at the time current coaches that would venture in the establishment for some cold adult beverages. I got to know several of them from me overindulging in adult beverages from time to time. And there was all kinds of 'inside' info that I would hear and never post on sites like this because I didn't feel like dealing with this type of response.

Do what you want. I'm just suggesting to tone it down with the everyone is in the dark routine, because that is far from an accurate assessment.

One of the guys I'm referring to, I still see several times a week at the NFC Signature club off of Walker Springs. Another one comes and watches Raider games at a buddy's house off of Watts Rd. People act like these former players and coaches live in a compound and never get out in public. And to ACs point, a lot of them will even tell you they don't know how legit their information is. It's what they heard. When Dooley was here, he wasn't alumni friendly. And I could tell by their demeanor what they thought about him. Butch has allowed more open access to former players, which means more tidbits of information, mostly about the current players practices more so than recruiting.

My approach is take all information with a grain of salt. Compare it with what Hubbs, Callahan, etc. says and decide for yourself how legit the information appears to be. Truly, even the coaches can't predict where a 17-18 year old kid is going to sign, because oftentimes the kid doesn't even know. It would just be a boring forum if all we talked about was whether we are getting a 3rd QB or not.

Yeah, I've seen them at Toddy's as well. The place I was talking about is a little further up Kingston Pike.

It's been several years (8 or 9) since I've been to Toddy's but I used to see a lot of former players and some coaches there. I used to tailgate at the football games with several of the Toddy's patron's and a couple of the former players. Loads of fun in the G-10 lot.

Partied at the G-10 lot quite a few times. We used to set up shop around First Tennessee on the strip for the most part. I only went to 2 games last year. I'd almost rather watch the first half in the stadium and go back to the tailgate to eat and relax and watch the 2nd half. Did that at last years UGA and Vandy games.

Doug Matthews broadcast another informative episode on Big Orange Sunday. Matthews touched base on last weeks broadcast and added to his comments.

Doug Matthews Big Orange Sunday July 6, 2014

Doug reiterated what he said a week ago on Big Orange Sunday.

• We will sign 24 players in this class.
• We currently have 18 players committed.
• 2-4 will likely not be part of this class after NSD.
• Players can commit to a school, but the coaches do not have to accept that commitment and can not comment on the recruits before NSD.
• We have 9 scholarship slots left in this 2015 recruiting class.
• The staff can be selective in choosing the 9 remaining slots.
• 5 spots are being held for Jefferson, Phillips, McKenzie, McGraw, and Richmond. We will likely get at least 3 out of those 5 players.
• Important that we have our QBs recruiting in place for stability of class.

Doug Matthews stated that Butch can be patient and selective with these=final 9 spots because we have 31 players from the 2014 class on campus and the staff has had the opportunity to see them on campus and have a good idea of their talent and skill sets. They have a good idea of what they can do and have been able to focus on where the team’s biggest needs are now.

Doug stated that heading into 2015 recruiting the 5 positions of biggest need are as follows:

1. QB – Getting Dormady and Jennings is huge because this creates stability in this recruiting class.
2. Cornerback
3. Linebacker
4. Defensive Tackle
5. Defensive End

Matthews looked at the 2014 class and commented on how Butch Jones and Bob Welton look at it and use it to determine where to go with the rest of the 2015 class.

• Hendrix is likely moving inside. Jakob Johnson is definitely moving to defensive end
• The numbers on the offensive line are better than what some believe. . Two more defensive tackles from the 2014 class are moving to the offensive line. Coaches like to sign defensive linemen and move them over to the offensive line, rather than the other way around.
• Linebacker – Coaches love Niko Creamer. He is big and fast. They know what they have in Bryant and Bates.
• Cornerback - Moseley and Payne came in early. Add in Gaulden and Evan Berry into the mix for the CB job opposite Sutton.
• Nickel and Safety – Elliot Berry, TK Jr, and McDowell will get shots at the nickel position.
• Wide Receiver – Malone and Pearson have added the depth and talent that they have needed to surround North and the QBs.
• TE – Wolfe and Helm have added the tight ends that this team desperately needed.

Positions of Need – 6 out of 9 are on defensive side of the ball
1. Quarterback . - Doug Matthews stated that he feels even stronger this week about the Vols not signing another QB in this class because he said that he has been told that UT coaches have made the decision to not accept or sign another QB in this class, whether that players is a dual threat QB or a pro-style QB. Jennings and Dormady are their QBs in this class.
2. Cornerback - Matthews said that this is the most pressing need and that we would take 2 corners with the 9 final slots in this class.
3. Linebacker - Matthews said we would take 1-2 more linebackers with the final 9 slots.
4. Defensive Tackle – Matthews said we would take 2 more DTs with the remaining 9 slots.
5. Defensive End – Matthews said that with Hendrix loving inside, we will likely add 2 more defensive ends in this class.

Where We are In Good Shape

Matthews looked at where the staff believes that we are in good shape at WR, but says we will take one more WR in addition to Williams. He believes that other WR is Van Jefferson.

Doug said that the staff believes that it is good shape on the offensive line. We will still want to ad Richmond if possible.

The Vols are done recruiting RBs. With Hurd, Scott, Paulk in house and Reid and Kamara coming in, we are loaded at RB and done recruiting there unless someone from this group leaves.

We are in grerast shape at TE with Wolfe and Helm. Oliver brings a different skill set to the team. He has the size and speed to line up inside and in the slot.

Griffin will be our lone safety in this class. The staff likes were we are at safety.

Matthews stated that everything can change via injury or departure. Butch will be selective with the final 9 slots and can be creative if he choose to do so. We will no longer be in apposition to sign 30 players in class because of the talent that we brought in the 2014 class. The staff knows the character and personalities of the recruits and is looking at whether a particular player fits in with the current team members and recruiting class. Team chemistry is important.

I'm one of the crazy Vol fans, I've not missed going to a home game since 1972. The streak may not last much longer, getting to where it's harder on me to make it in and out. I've started riding a bus now which is a lot of help. Hope to make them all again this year.

:good!:

Doug Mathews, in his show this morning, pointed out a few things that surprised me.

A couple of our current commitments are borderline academically speaking. The recruiting services rarely point out this information. Thus, we could lose a couple players from this recruiting class to the JUCO route. I wonder who those two might be?

Mathews pointed out that the talent level in middle Tennessee is growing at a fast rate. Middle Tennessee has become a recruiting hotbed and programs from all over the nation are working to establish pipelines into the schools in this area. Mathews pointed out that over the next 2-3 years, UT will probably pick up 5 recruits or so from this area and that number could grow as the area grows. The University of Tennessee has never before, had an area within the Volunteer State, where they could pick up so many recruits as they will in the middle Tennessee area. Think about it…..5 out of 20 recruits every year means that 20% of your recruiting class and over four years 20% of your team comes from one area. This is a huge gain and advantage for the University of Tennessee.

Tennessee got a steal in TE, Kyle Oliver. He is big, fast and a late developer overlooked by many big schools until now.

Mathews touched upon the roster and possible Early Enrollees. He pointed out that you can only have 85 scholarships at any one time. What determines the number of Early Enrollees is how many current players will graduate or leave the program in the fall. That will equal the number of Early Enrollees. Tennessee is currently at 85 scholarships.
